What is a "Pedal Partner"?
Tumblr media
PHAT Tuesday's 2023 & 2024 Pedal Partner: Teagan
In past emails I often mention my team's "Pedal Partner".
What Exactly is a "Pedal Partner"?
Pedal Partners are pediatric patients at the Jimmy Fund who are paired with PMC riders and teams. The teams ride in honor of their Pedal Partner and it is a reminder of "Why We Ride".
However it is more than just that. The teams often build relationships with the Pedal Partner families that go beyond the year that they are matched up.
It is also very important to the families themselves as the following 4 minute video highlights:

CBS Sunday Morning
Earlier this month on August 15th, the Pan-Mass Challenge was featured on CBS Mornings. The PMC, America's most successful athletic fundraiser, celebrates its 45th anniversary and surpasses $1 billion raised for cancer research. CBS Mornings' Nancy Chen sits down and rides along with PMC Founder & Executive Director Billy Starr to explore his personal connection to cancer, the inspiration behind the event, and the legacy of the bike-a-thon that has inspired participants worldwide for over four decades.

CBS Mornings: How the Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon became a $1 billion force for cancer research
Did you know? Every dollar goes directly to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, where more than half of the cancer drugs approved by the FDA in the last five years were developed.
More than half... in the last 5 years!
That's quite an impact!
That is the impact your donations make.
It's not too late for you to donate for 2024!
I am still accepting donations until the end of September. I still have just over $1,900 to raise in order to reach my 2024 goal of $12,000. Please consider making a donation this year.

Some Numbers, a Video, and My Fundraising Update…
Some interesting numbers from the PMC:
What It Takes to Feed PMC Riders & Volunteers
1,500 pounds of Teddie Peanut Butter
8,400 hamburgers
400 gallons of Legal Sea Foods clam chowder
15,000 bags of Cape Cod Potato Chips
115 watermelons
9,000 Kayem hot dogs and sausages
600 pounds of Cedar's Mediterranean Foods hummus and tabouli
30,000 servings of DripDrop ORS
70 kegs & 900 cases of Samuel Adams alcoholic and nonalcoholic beer
700 pounds of Little Leaf Farms greens
31,000 pounds of Hans Kissle salads including lobster salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, and tortellini salad
And much more!
My PMC Day 1
I know during the ride on Day 1 I estimate that I drank roughly 5 gallons of electrolyte enhanced water, including about a quart of Del's Frozen Lemonade at the 4th Water Stop. Afterwards I ate about 5 hot dogs, a cheeseburger, a couple slices of pizza, a Sam Adams beer, and countless Polar Black Cherry seltzers!
The start of Day one was relatively comfortable until about mile 70, then it started to heat up. From there it was hot & humid with temps in the low 90's.
That explains the 5 gallons I drank :-)

2024 Fundraising Update
As the 2024 Pan-Mass Challenge recedes into the past the memories remain fresh and the body continues to recover.
It's not over yet though, there's still more time to raise funds. I have until the end of September to fundraise for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Many of you who are receiving this email have donated at least once in the past 3 years. If everyone on this list donates what you donated in your most recent year (2021-2023), it would bring an additional $5,000 in.
That would put me well past my 2024 goal of $12,000.
So if you can make a donation it would be greatly appreciated.
In the meantime, I have a PMC Video to work on ;-)

This Weekend I Ride for My College Roommates
As I mentioned in an earlier email and in my PMC Profile, I am dedicating the ride this year to two of my college roommates.
Both of them are fighting very difficult battles with cancer.
Steve Lufkin, College Roommate Junior Year, USMC
On Oct 6th, 2023, Steve had brain surgery to remove a small mass. On Oct 17 it was confirmed as Glioblastoma, the very aggressive and fatal brain cancer. He started Radiation and Chemotherapy on Oct. 30th and completed treatment on Dec 11th. The tumor had affected the part of his brain that has reduced his ability to walk, talk, and read.
Tumblr media
He continues to battle his brain cancer with strength, hope, and positivity. It has been a tough battle for Steve, but so far he is beating the odds. Some of his strength and cognitive abilities are returning.
Chris Greklek, College Roommate Senior Year
Tumblr media
Chris had been a frequent visitor to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I actually paid him a visit on one of his stays there a number of years ago. Back in March, I, along with a couple other roommates, got together and we told old war stories and caught each other up on our lives.
Chris is having a tough year. Earlier this year his adoptive father passed away. Then, towards the end of April, his 15 year old furry companion, Clyde, passed away.
Tumblr media
We said goodbye to our old, loving and beautiful friend, Clyde, this past weekend. He lived a beautiful 15 year life with us Grekleks. The last 2 years with me. He helped me more than I helped him. We went on so many great adventures together. He especially loved Lowes and Walmart. Everyone wanted to pet him and he enjoyed every second of it. Everyone will miss you, Clyde. More than you ever knew. See you soon, my friend. We'll go on more great adventures together. Christ Greklek, Facebook, April 30th
Early in July, after fighting cancer in one form or another, his Oncologist told him that there is nothing more they can do.
It's time again to ride into battle. Only this time, my weapons are empty. They're, unfortunately, useless against this effing disease at this point. I fight now because that's what I do. My medical oncologist told me on the 5th, "There is nothing more that can be done to help me". While difficult to hear, I've been anticipating these words for several years. So no surprises there. Doctors don't give life expectancy times anymore. It's all specific to each person. I've made it to the end of the road. Now I'm lucky enough to look back on how much of an absolutely beautiful life I've been able to experience. I'm also able to go out on my terms, my way, no regrets...ever. I'm so damn grateful. Love you all, thank you everyone. Do better. Be stronger. Christ Greklek, Facebook, July 19th
Despite this news, Chris remained strong and positive. He is an inspiration.
Rest in Peace Chris
On Tuesday, July 30th, Chris lost his seventeen year battle and passed away surrounded by family :-(
Rest in Peace Chris. You fought one hell of a battle.
PMC 2024, August 3rd & 4th
This weekend they both will be in my thoughts as I struggle up those hills and grind it out 185 or so miles over 2 days, knowing that it's nothing compared to the struggles they both have faced. Their fight, inner strength, and perseverance against all odds is inspiring.
If you have donated already, thank you. You donation is greatly appreciated!
If you haven't donated yet, it would be great to see your donation hit over the course of this weekend :-)

PMC at Fenway, Our Pedal Partner, and a Big Milestone!
Living Proof Celebration at Fenway Park
This past Friday I took my family to PMC Night at Fenway Park where the Boston Red Sox hosted the Pan-Mass Challenge and honored Living Proof Riders, riders who have survived cancer, by allowing them to parade around the field on their bikes.
Among them was a PHAT Tuesday Teammate, Sharon Foster. This year she will be riding in her 7th Pan-Mass Challenge. Sharon is active, healthy and thriving today due to the amazing treatment from her doctor at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Tumblr media
Teagan's Last Treatment...
This Tuesday, our 2023/2024 PMC Pedal Partner, Teagan,  is scheduled for what is supposed to be her LAST treatment. They also are waiting to hear about port removal.  Teagan has been battling B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia since being diagnosed in May of 2022.
Tumblr media
It has been a tough journey for Teagan. She has been hospitalized a number of times with bacterial infections, side effects from her Chemotherapy treatments, and even severe acute necrotizing pancreatitis with hypovolemic shock. In addition to this Teagan has had additional complications from pancreatitis and other reactions to various medications.
Teagan is fortunate that her oncologist is the doctor who wrote the protocol for treatment of her specific type of leukemia. Hopefully this last scheduled treatment today is the beginning of the end of her 2+ year cancer journey.
Prior to receiving her diagnosis, Teagan was a dedicated, competitive dancer.  With hard work and a little bit of physical therapy, she has returned to dance on a small scale.  She's your typical high school girl; she loves her friends, her phone, music, clothes and shopping.
In Other News...
As of last Friday, the Pan-Mass Challenge surpassed $28 million raised so far this year, bringing the fundraising total since 1980 to $1 billion for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Tumblr media
With just over 2 weeks to go I am just over halfway to my $12,000 goal. I am hoping to at least hit $10,000 by the end of July. Please help me reach my goals by making a donation.

Heat Acclimation and a Pedal Partner Visit
This past Sunday myself and a few of my PHAT Tuesday teammates headed out for a 60+ mile training ride. Here in Massachusetts it was a hot and humid Sunday. We rode at a steady pace and made sure to stay hydrated. We were only riding just over half the distance of Day 1 of the PMC, so it was good to get acclimated to the heat.
Our route also took us near our 2012 Pedal Partner, Stephen D'Ercole. At age 3 he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (aka ALL), tThe most common type of leukemia in children under 15. He received treatment for 2 years . The first year of his treatment was very extremely difficult. He was initially hospitalized for 35 days. In total, he spent 73 nights the first year at Children's Hospital.
To make a long story short, he is now a healthy college student entering his senior year at Salem State University and over this summer he is a branch manager for a College Painters franchise out of Norton, MA.
Tumblr media
It is stories like Stephen's that motivate myself and others on our team to keep riding and raising funds year after year.
There are 24 days to this year's Pan-Mass Challenge and I am almost halfway to my goal of $12,000. July has started off strong with an additional $1,175 rolling in. So if you can, please donate to my ride to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The PMC is One Month Away!
It's July and the Pan-Mass Challenge is only one month away!
July is typically a big month for fundraising and it has already gotten off to a good start!  Since my last update I have raised an additional $800+ dollars!
My total so far is $5,147 (Including a $100 Pending Corporate Match).
I typically have approximately 120 donors in any given year and I am at just about half that so far with 58 individual donors. I am hoping that you can help bring me closer to my goal this month!
A Reminder...
Today I received a reminder on why we ride from my PMC Team, PHAT Tuesday. Today is our 2020 Pedal Partner's 17th Birthday. Well, it should have been anyway. We, as a team, continue to ride for her and all our past and present Pedal Partners.

So I hope that this month you can make a donation to help the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute find a cure for cancer and ensure that stories like Bella's have a happier ending.

Juneteenth, One Way to Commemorate…
What is "Juneteenth" you might be asking yourself?
Juneteenth is a Federal Holiday also called Emancipation Day, Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, Juneteenth is the commemoration of June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, TX, learned that they were free.
For many who are reading this, you may not have a direct connection to the events that happened on June 19th, 1865. “How”, you may ask, “can I help commemorate this new holiday?”
One way to commemorate this is to help the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute address the disparities that many underserved groups, including Black Americans and those of low socioeconomic status, face when battling cancer.
Dr. Christopher Lathan, MD, MS, MPH is the Chief Clinical Access and Equity Officer at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is leading efforts to address these disparities.
Tumblr media
Dr. Lathan leads system-wide efforts to combat structural racism and improve health care outcomes for all patients and communities served by Dana-Farber by implementing new initiatives to reduce disparities in access to care. Dr. Lathan also partners with community and local leaders to address common challenges, such as health equity, social justice, and racism.
From Dr. Lathan's Profile on the Dana-Farber / Harvard Cancer Center site
To help fund Dr. Latham's research at Dana-Farber please consider making a donation.

Dana-Farber's Nutritional Resources
I heard back from my former college roommate, Steve, who is battling late stage brain cancer. He apologized for getting back to me so late, but he stated that it is difficult to put his thoughts into words due to the brain tumor.
He reached out on FaceBook for nutritional and dietary advice for those battling cancer.
After a quick, well formulated search, I learned that the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has a team of Nutritionists that have special training in oncology and nutrition, and base their advice on scientifically sound nutrition research.
Here is a link to the resources they provide:
Dana-Farber: Nutritional Services
Tumblr media
I passed along this information to Steve. I hope he and his team take advantage of the information presented here.
Resources like these are made possible with the help of all the money that is raised by The Jimmy Fund and the Pan-Mass Challenge.
This is a great example of you donations at work, so if you are able this weekend, please make a donation via my Pan-Mass Challenge fundraising efforts.

Happy Friday!
This month I sent out 185 note cards to past donors. So far, that has resulted in an additional $1,215 in donations from 17 donors!
It's a good start and I hope to have a strong June.
As of this morning, I have raised an overall total of $2,927!  Just under 25% of my goal!

May Riding
I've logged about 150 miles of training rides in May, which is about 100+ miles less than I typically ride in May. So I need to ramp up my riding!
High School Graduation
Tonight I will be watching my youngest daughter graduate from High School. It is a very proud and exciting moment for our family!
Unfortunately there is one family of a classmate of Lizzie who will not be celebrating their child's graduation. They lost their son to cancer earlier this school year. Cancer sucks.
So please help find a cure for cancer by making a donation to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's efforts to find a cure.

100% of every donation goes directly to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and supports cancer research & patient care.
