What is Charting “Chart Prepared” or “Chart Not Prepared” in Indian Railways?

As you may have heard these words, “Charting,” ” Chart Prepared,” or ” Chart Not Prepared” while traveling in the Indian Railways.

Charting is the process by which the Railway Authority of India allocates vacant seats of other quotas to General / Tatkal quota. There are several quotas in the Indian Railways, under which empty seats are assigned.

General Rules for Chart Preparation

The officials prepare the first chart for any train about 4 hours before the scheduled departure time of the train from the original station or remote location station.

For the early morning trains chart is prepared the night before. A chart is prepared one night before the departure of trains which are to be left early in the morning.

If the remaining seats in the first chart are empty, which are prepared 4 hours before departure, then the remaining seats are made available for booking.

5.       GNWL Status – GNWL stands for General Waiting List. This means the passenger is allowed to board the train, if any of the passengers cancel their tickets or did not board the train.

6.       TQWL Status – TQWL stands for Tatkal Waiting List. This means the passenger booked a tatkal ticket yet the ticket has not been confirmed.

7.       PQWL Status -- PQWL stands for Pooled Quota Waiting List. This means that the passenger has booked the tickets from Origin Station but not booked until the destination station. It is booked till the station before the destination station or before that. The ticket’s status shows that it is on Waiting List.

8.       RLWL Status -- RLWL stands for Remote Location Waiting List. This means the passenger is on short term journey. The tickets show that the origin and destination station is intermediary stations.

9.       NOSB Status – NOSB stands for No Seat Berth. This means that the passenger is not an adult. He or she is a child passenger below 12 years of age. No seats are allotted to them.
