I said I'd show the moment Gorm started to let humans get close again. Here we are!
When Gorm realized that he was getting attached to Green he instantly wanted to distance himself from them, afraid of being hurt again. Thus he started to ignore and avoid them. With Green not understanding a thing, leading to them luring Gorm into picking them up so they could confront him.
It may have happened hundreds of years ago. But time is relative to Gorm and it may as well have happened a few months ago. For all he knows, the captain and crew are still out there.
If it's not clear; Gorm's catching Green with his nose so they don't fall. Green's a lil clumsy. But hey it worked in their favor! xD

Thinking about how when I was little I would pretend my American girl doll was a giant and my sisters Fisher Price Loving Family dolls were the humans. I would also carry around the Fisher Price dolls and pretend I was the giant. There were definitely signs that this interest would manifest
#giant/tiny#g/t#there were signs#so many little signs#I always wonder if my sisters remember that I did that

Big Bend - Chapter Nine - Interpretive Talks
A/n: guess who FINALLY got more of this story written over spring break! Sorry it's so late, I was in the hospital for a bit due to an accidental poisoning and then trying to catch up on things with work and school irl. The horrors persist but so do I so here's the next chapter!
Previous
Word count: ~1400
Cw: brief mention of toxic relationship/isolation at the end
•
Angie and Penelope were already sitting on the outskirts of the pavilion when I arrived. It had been their day off. I hadn't been so lucky, which meant my hair was still dripping wet from the quick shower I'd taken when I had gotten off work.
It'll dry soon enough in this heat, I thought. Even in the early evening it was unrelenting.
“Hey girl!” Penelope greeted brightly as she saw me approaching. “We saved you a seat!”
She and Angie both scooted over on the concrete bench they were sitting on.
“Thanks.” I took a seat next to them.
“How was work?” Angie asked. I shrugged.
“Same old, same old. Sold lots of stickers. And water bottles to people who didn't consider bringing one to the remote desert.” I replied. Angie laughed at the last part.
“I'll never get why it seems like so many tourists don't do even a quick google search before planning a whole trip somewhere,” she said. “I can't tell you how many people I've seen set off for a multi mile hike in flip flops. Not even like, actual sandals or something, I'm talking $2 Walmart bin flip flops.”
I cringed. “I can't imagine the blisters they must get.”
A tremor interrupted our conversation. It was slight, but noticeable. Another one followed seconds later. Then another. The three of us turned to look towards Easton's place, surmising its source.
Sure enough, his familiar - and hard to miss - figure was approaching. I'd grown more used to the shaking that accompanied his approach. As long as I didn't think much about it, anyways. If I did, I was still hit with an intense feeling of awe. It was surreal that a person like me, or Angie, or Penelope was that big.
Someone with feelings, and fears, and hopes, and dreams, and the ability to hold a truck in the palm of his hand. Even the vast landscape surrounding us was literally moved by him doing something as simple as taking a step. A movement many people didn't even give a second thought to. I could almost see why Dave was wary of him. Almost and not actually because all of that contrasted starkly with what talking to him, interacting with him, felt like.
Kind. He felt kind.
The tremors continued to increase until Easton had reached the pavilion, where he took a careful seat in front of the visitor center.
“I'm kinda surprised you made it this evening,” Angie said casually, drawing my attention back from the giant. Had I been staring?
“When you mentioned you were just getting off work when the program started I wasn't sure you would. I thought you might wanna relax, take a long shower, y’Know?”
My cheeks grew hot. “Oh. Uh, well, I'm a quick shower type of person anyways. And I had a ton of caffeine today so I don't think I even know what relaxing is.” I said with a failed effort to sound casual and a forced shrug.
“Plus the topic does sound interesting,” Penelope chimed in, much to my relief. “Big Bend bluebonnets?”
“Yeah. I don't know much about them,” I said.
The interpretive talk wasn't particularly long, maybe 20 minutes, though I found myself thinking I wouldn't mind listening to Easton talk for much longer.
Just because the topic is interesting, of course, like Angie said. I silently amended the first thought quickly. And I did know much more about it by the end, including that they were quite toxic to a number of species such as humans and cats. I made a mental note to not start a garden of them anytime soon.
After Easton finished, the floor was opened to questions. Unsurprisingly, most of those questions were about him instead of the flowers he'd been talking about. There were several requests for photos too, which seemed to be a common reaction people had to meeting him.
The three of us watched as one particularly excited young girl introduced herself as Abbey, 8 years old, and asked him if he had a favorite flower in the park. That was possibly the first botany related question of the evening. I saw his face light up with excitement.
“That's a hard question! There's so many interesting and beautiful flowers here. I do really like Desert Marigolds - they're those golden flowers you might have seen around.”
“Those are really pretty! My aunt Hannah has a bunch of them outside her house!” Abbey exclaimed, looking to one of the two women who stood behind her. “Can I take a picture with you? I told Jake in my class I was going to meet an aphirial and he didn't believe me because he said that wasn't possible and he thinks he knows everything so I want to prove him wrong.”
Easton laughed. “Of course we can take a picture.”
“Ooh, can you pick me up?” Abbey asked.
“You should probably ask your grown ups about that,” Easton said, looking over at the two women beside Abbey. The shorter one - the one Abbey had referred to as her aunt Hannah - looked at the taller one. I guessed she was the girl's mother.
“Can Easton pick me up, Mom? Please?” Abbey asked, confirming my assumption barely a secons later. The woman gave an uncertain glance to Hannah, as well as to John, who was standing nearby as usual.
“He’s always very careful, but we entirely understand whatever you’re comfortable with,” John said.
“I can go with her,” Hannah offered.
“Alright, if your aunt goes with you,” her mom said. I saw her mouth something like thank you to Hannah.
“Thank you Aunt Hannah!” Abbey said. “This is going to be so cool!”
“Yeah,” Hannah said. She glanced up at Easton, who gave them both a reassuring smile.
“I’ll only lift you up to the height of the observation deck,” he said. “So, basically, I’ll let you both climb into my hand, and I won’t move until you’re both ready. When I do pick you up, please stay still and stay in the center of my hand, okay?”
“Okay!” Abbey said.
“Got it,” Hannah replied. Easton lowered his hand to the ground, leaning forward slightly.
“So just, climb onto your hand?” Hannah double checked.
“Yeah. Don’t worry, you won’t hurt me,” he joked.
She and Abbey got settled as much in the center of Easton’s palm as they could.
“Okay, we’re ready,” Hannah said after a moment.
“Wonderful! Remember to please stay seated and off we go,” Easton said. He lifted them up slowly and carefully. I found myself wondering what it would be like to be picked up by Easton. What a hand would look like on that scale. What it would feel like - I imagined it'd be warm, and probably quite soft. Cozy, even.
“You two still alright?” Easton asked.
“This is so cool!!” Abbey said. “It’s like that scene from King Kong. I mean, but not scary, of course.”
“I’m glad it’s not scary,” Easton said brightly. If he knew who King Kong was, or was bothered by being compared to a monster movie, he didn’t show it. After they'd taken their photos, Easton lowered them back to the ground carefully. Abbey clambered off his hand, running to tell her mother all about how cool the view was. Hannah, meanwhile, climbed down more slowly. She hung back while the mother and daughter made their way into the visitor center, instead talking to John.
“Ooh, you think John's got a lady friend?” Penelope whispered to Angie and I. Angie rolled her eyes.
“You're always trying to ship everyone,” she said.
“Can I help it if I just see love everywhere? Besides, I'm usually right. Maybe I should start a match making service. If this whole cashier thing doesn't work out.”
The three of us giggled. I thought I saw Easton glance in our direction for a split second. I wondered if he’d notice and recognized us, then thought better of it. It was a pretty big crowd, after all.
“Well, should we head back to my dorms? I've got ice cream and face masks waiting for us,” Angie said. As I nodded, I thought about how nice it was to have something close to a social life again. Something close to friends. Two things my ex had never allowed me much of.
It was starting to feel like moving out here was the right decision, though I didn't dare get my hopes up too much.
