I've had the idea in my head for a long time that Subaru had a period of "Heroin Chic". It's not that he maintained any kind of aesthetic, it's just that he was in a very difficult period of his life. He was doing drugs, drank and smoked a lot, and he smelled like smoke. He lost a lot of weight, he had bags under his eyes. his hair was just a mess, he didn't take care of it at all. In my imagination, when his hair grew so long that he felt uncomfortable, he just recklessly cut it off with his dagger. I think he even tried self-harm once, but realised that it was pointless because he was a vampire.
