13 reasons why season 4: The controversial show returns for a very unneeded and convoluted final season
SPOILERS AHEAD
What started out as a realistic teenage drama which addressed everyday important issues, it turned into a psychological horror with unrealistic ‘mystery’, blackmailing, murder and secrets. For 10 painful hour long episodes we have to endure clays nightmares and hallucinations which lead nowhere. Why did we have to see him showering in blood and screaming? Why did we have to keep seeing Monty die and listen to how he died in graphic monologues? Why did we need to see bryces face getting plastered with maggots? Why did we need the camping episode which was more a “cabin in the woods” horror movie? It was clear that the writers ran out of ideas so had to put in all this unnecessary things and make it as s l o w as humanly possible. The last episode spent 90 minutes showing Justin’s demise and all the sadness and no hope and boring speeches which didn’t tell us anything new. 90 minutes. It was inching along so slowly for no reason that I so wished Netflix had a playback speed option so I could put it on 1.75x Teenagers are incredibly vulnerable. They are easily manipulated especially in the media they are shown. This show is not suited for them. The entire last season you hear clays narration about how nothing gets better; how horrible high school and the world is and how everyone is doomed for sadness. Although he ‘redeemed’ this in the very last episode, it doesn’t suffice and you’d have to hope that any teenager watching actually gets that far. Even for the ‘normal’ teenager which is not going through any major issues, watching this season and listening to all the depressing dialogue would make them question living and life entirely. They would begin to look at high school in such a negative view; believing that that’s how it has to be. It even ends with Justin dying, and everyone’s rare happiness at the prom is shown as temporary. That even in the end things don’t end well. Instead of Justin getting better, people actually allowed to be happy and have a life, he has to DIE and Jess has to endure even more suffering. This is just too much for an average teenager. There are enough deaths in the show. There is enough sadness. Too much sadness. Any little time they are shown happy or finally normal, it ends badly. . And Justin: Justin was actually getting better; and everyone was giving him shit for it? Clay made him feel worthless and a burden someone who was taking clays place in his family. The things clay said to Justin at the house party weren’t things that a ‘hero’ clay was supposed to be would say. Why was everyone demeaning Justin when he was trying to be happy and move on with life and be there for them? And these are supposed to be the protagonists?? All throughout the show it enforcers the idea that kids shouldn’t tell their parents anytning. Clays parents BEG him to let them in for the whole 4 seasons, and he refuses and gets into more and more trouble throughout the whole thing. And they wonder why their parents began tracking their phone and emails? This invasion of privacy isn’t okay, but the show needs to show more of the teenagers opening up to their parents and showing a healthier relationship between them and schools. They’re not the enemy. Yet the students only open up when they want their parents to bring prom back. All in all, Season 4 was just wallowing of depression and negativity, and things which led nowhere. you could’ve ended with season 3 and it’s closure and continue life feeling slightly optimistic.
