An Update for CH9

Hey, sorry for the sudden post. I just felt like I should just update everyone since I haven't posted or said anything for a while.

I'm still working on ch9's translation bit by bit, although its often like a paragraph a week. I just don't have the time or energy to work on it as much due to things like school and job hunting. Hopefully there will be a point when I can spend a significant amount of time to work on ch9, but I don't know when.

If the series by some miracle gets professionally translated I might stop anyways lol, though with how semi-unpopular it is I can't really see it unless we get an A-1 event.

TLDR : ch9 is long and wordy and I'm busier than last year so its progressing at a much slower rate, and I'm sorry that I need you guys to just wait for an indefinite period of time.

Arknights: A1 Operation Preparation Detachment Chapter 8 Translation Release!

I got done with this one a lot sooner than I expected. I thought that I would be burnt out by the end but it ended up being a nice break from all the other stuff going on in my life.

Sorry if there's a dip in quality, I didn't have anyone else look over it again this time, and since I'm not an artist I didn't bother redrawing most of the sound effects in the panels. Sorry if it looks bad this was the best to my abilities.

Translation Complete for chapter 8 (not typeset)

It's been a while since I updated this. Sorry about that, got busy with school.

All 90 pages of chapter 8 have been translated as of now, I cannot say for the quality of the translations. Some of was it was tricky like always and I am not a professional or have the life experience to TL it properly.

Since I still have finals and it still is 90 pages worth of content to typeset, I don't know when I'll be done with typesetting it for an actual chapter release.

Since it might be another 5-6 months until that gets completed, I've decided to share the google doc I've been using to translate ch7 and 8, so you guys can read along to the online comic.

CH8 is labeled on the side. This is the last chapter I'm doing on this doc so don't worry about anything.

Officially Translated Rhodes Island's Records of Originium: Rhine Lab: (Offical Website)

A canon manhua centered around the circumstances that lead to Silence falling out with Saria and joining Rhodes Island with Ifrit, as well as Ifrit's attempt to save a dying infected stowaway on the landship. Essential reading for understanding the Rhine Lab storyline and characters - read it right after Mansfield! One of the characters, Darya, is mentioned in both Ifrit's module and briefly in Lone Trail.

Rhodes Island's Records of Originium: Blacksteel: (Official Source)

A short story focusing on the lives of the Blacksteel operators aboard the landship. While it often gets overshadowed by the Rhine Lab manga which is bigger in scope, this is a great read especially if you're interested in Franka or Liskarm.

Rhodes Kitchen -TIDBITS-: (Official Source)

An anthology story related to the cuisine that's important to a variety of operators. While it might seem unassuming, the art is gorgeous and it's really well-written. I particularly recommend the Goldenglow (Chapter 4) and Rosa (Chapter 5) chapters.

As the title says, a series of non-canon anthology stories regarding the cast of Rhodes' Island! Note that the link provided only has complete translations up to Volume 4 (and Vol. 4 is missing Ch. 7), and most of the chapters avaliable after that point were MTL'd, so I can't vouch for their accuracy. Chapters I'd recommend are: Volume 1: Chapter 12 (focused on Myrrh trying to improve her medicine), Chapter 14 (focused on Saria and Silence trying to put apart their differences to take Ifrit on vacation, afaik the only place where they are directly referred to as her "moms") Volume 2: Chapter 1 (Manticore tries to make friends), Chapter 3 (The LGD gets drunk), Chapter 11 (Texlapp and Mosexu yuribait), Ch. 13 (Magallan tries to find a pet), Chapter 16 (Ethan spies on the interior lives of Rhodes operators) Volume 3: Chapter 6 (Snowsant, Ifrit, Nian and Shaw are forced to make friends), Chapter 7 (Gummy flashes back to Chernobog), Chapter 10 (FEater and Shaw yuribait), Chapter 13 (Blackout on the landship, as well as Ayerscarpe and Leonhardt yaoibait)

Unfortunately, only translated up to Chapter 6, but one of the characters (Elba) has a brief cameo in Light Sparks in Darkness! Edit: Chapter 7 has been translated by @pooce-art, and they're working on Chapter 8!

Angelina: Sketches of THIS Messenger's Journey: (Mangadex)

Also published as part of the Terra Historicus website and not yet officially translated, focuses on the adventures of Angelina travelling across Terra as a Messenger! Recent chapters relate to the upcoming Sami event & IS4, as well as the upcoming So Long, Adele.

Prelude Suite: Unrestrained Play: (Wiki)

Unfortunately, I can't find a full translation for this one - an epilogue to Hortus De Esscapismo focusing on Arturia's background. Of course, major spoilers for Hortus apply - if you can find a full translation yourself.

As well, an upcoming manhua focused on the Break the Ice cast was annouced during the 4.5 Anniversary stream. As far as I'm aware, chapters have not begun releasing yet!

Just thought that I should throw my hat into the ring since I'm doing AK A1 manhua TLs. I don't think that the in-game translation is machine translation.

I do just think its a wonky one. Chinese is just very wonky to translate into English. This is because a lot of characters are more symbolic than anything. A lot of larger sentences I translate end up going through like 2-4 rewrites to try to get the meaning across in a way that's flows ok enough and keeps it accurate, and sometimes even then I'm still not happy and have to rewrite the whole sentence structure.

Also HG's writing style is already a bit wordy and convoluted which probably doesn't help.

So overall I think its probably due to the TL's being done quickly and probably not being supervised as much. OFC its their job to do this and I'm probably just less affected by the mistakes cus my brain auto corrects them.

it 1000% feels like, for the lack of time/aid/skill, the translators end up using machine TL for events, and that image you posted as an example feels like a prime candidate for that

fiammetta's file lines to this day are awkward and stunted because they're almost word for word machine TLs

Okay I was gonna wait a little while for this post but you hit the nail on the head.

My (apparently not-so) tinfoil hat theory about this game: nearly all of it is machine translated.

While reading Dorothy's Vision in preparation for Lone Trail, I came across a (probably infamous) stretch of critically story-relevant text that was not translated at all. A friend of mine directed me to the arknights story reader, where I looked into the EN translation and, yep, that's still Chinese. So I ran it through a Machine TL to get the jist of it. It was serviceable, a lot of the terms translated surprisingly well, but the moment to moment writing was obscured to me by the TL quality.

And in a moment of dread I realized it read EXACTLY like any old bit of Arknights story, and everything clicked. The problems I have always had with the sentence structure and word choice feeling strangely disjointed, lacking in logical flow--all of it showed up the same from this raw machine translation.

Y'all. We've been getting a poorly touched-up machine translation of the Chinese text this whole time. All the effort you have to put in to just figure out what's being said--it's not your fault, the story is not too smart for you, it's because you're being asked to read a machine translation, without the context that it will be rough and full of holes.. Everything that writing is--beyond merely conveying information or a sequence of events--we get none of that.

Think about all the nuance we missed of your favorite characters. Your favorite moments. How much of their nuance and depth did we miss?

How many other characters and moments did you dismiss or skim because the writing couldn't convey their emotional core? How many of those could have been as important to you as your current fave?

The fact that Kal'tsit comes across as unintelligible--does she instead sound wise and poetic, in the original?

How much of the full text of Arknights do you think is available to us? 80%? 40%? Who can say.

But I can say one thing. What we have now is not acceptable.

lol yeah there was so many times I had to guess what the sound effects were cus either the background was too busy or the handwriting was too messy

i feel like i’m going crazy. there is no feeling quite like trying to read a foreign language comic post about something you’re into (or god forbid the source material is originally in a different language and untranslated to boot. i love you scanlation teams you carry us all on your backs). it is like sitting outside of the concert venue and hearing it down the road but not seeing anything of value

Wow it's been a while since I posted about this. Sorry for the long wait, life stuff like getting sick happened to me and my Beta reader. We thank you for all your patience.

But WOW CH7 of the A1 manhua is now done! I am not an artist or comic creator, so my beta reader had to kinda sit me through making it look better, but since they've been really busy lately, I had to try to figure it out mostly by myself, so uh if something looks weird I'm sorry. CH8 starts when I have time

123 Rhodes Island translation. Today its the one and only unlicensed doctor, Mr. Aak!

So the more notable thing is that here I TL'd Aak referring the Doctor as "Boss" than "my dude". It's just that 老板 is how you would refer to someone like a shopkeeper. It's still respectful that just saying "my dude" but its not like calling you professor(what 博士 typically means PHD doctor) level.

I TL'd 喜提 as gifted, even though its more literally "happily obtained" but its in like an internet clickbait way. I really couldn't think of anything other than the loose mr.Beast thumbnail when coming up with a replacement so uh..... forgive me for underrepresenting the art of clickbait

Also fun fact is that when Aak says "Tch," he says 切 which when used as onomatopoeia is a typically female associated way to express slight distain. So take that in any you want.

123 rhodes island translation. I can't say today's cus I don't do them on a daily basis anymore. Anyways its Steward this time!

I actually do have some more things to say about this one. Most of the changes is minor things like going from "Actually the doctor told me before" where it just fit in the bubble better. The biggest one in comic 1 is the text "unlike some people" from "unlike this uneducated group" cus it didn't fit. And gummy's line originally its " Stew… 是炖菜的意思！祖先是厨子！it means the same thing, its just that the joke was a little more obvious at a glance.

For the 2nd one its the sfx, i just did it literally, just couldn't think of a better TL.

Hey its a new 123 rhodes Translation! Its been a while since I did one of these. Today it's Angelina. I've decided to just not do the cn only ops rn

ch7 is still coming out, I'm just waiting for my beta reader to get back to me. so I thank you for your patience so far, It'll be out soon so please wait warmly.

Other than that, this was pretty simple, only the lecture line was a little tricky but that was more just getting it to sound right in english. that and like trying to get the sentence of "looks like we accidently got Kal'tsit in the picture, who was passing through" into like a shorter more casual sounding sentence

Been a bit since I posted huh, as an update I am about half way done typesetting it! Ill post again when I'm done but I would like to have one of my friends or someone to read through it first to make sure its atleast OK. So I thank you for your patience

I have done the translations for every page (kinda)! Now All thats left is to reread them(boring) and typesetting(eeehguhg)!

I don't know exactly when I'm gonna be done with both but It should probably be soon.

But yeah Ch7 is now 100% translated bar some jank or so! finally lol (it didn't take as long as I thought TBH). Theres not gonna be any Tl thoughts mainly cus there would be to many and I probably would've forgotten the details by the time ill be done typesetting and stuff
