This is a picture of president Nixon who was president of the United States during the Vietnam War.  This photograph is relate able to this weeks reading because while he was president the Pentagon Papers were released to the NY Times, which revealed secrets about the government and military at the time.  The president then filed a suit again the NY Times to have them stop printing the information because it was a threat to national security.  By forcing them to stop spreading this story is an example of censorship.  Even though we have freedom of speech and press, we have to be careful with what we say because somethings, like those that could potentially threaten nation security, will not be allowed to be said or printed, despite the first amendment right.

Culture citizenship refers to the right to be different, and to belong in a participatory democratic sense. It claims that in a democracy social justice calls for equity among all citizens even when such differences potentially could be used to make certain people less equal or inferior to others.

This week talks about freedom of expression or freedom of speech.  This freedom is something that we americans a lot of the time take for granted because we have had it since the founding of our government.  In today's world though, freedom of speech is a scrutinized thing because of a lot of the opinions people have about a wide variety of topics.  However in a lot of these cases those people are afraid to hear the other side of the story and what someone else opinion on a matter might be.  Even going as far as to not let someone else speak on a specific subject because that opinion doesn't match their own.  To me, freedom of expression is the freedom too voice your opinion and if other everyday people are taking that right away from others, than there really isn't free speech in America.

This week in class we discussed freedom of expression and legal controls. This included things such as dirty words and indecent speech. One of the first instances over broadcasting was with NBC in 1937 when they ran a sketch with Mae West and a ventriloquist named Edgar Bergen. West was banned from radio for years after this provocative sketch and it was the catalyst for these types of restrictions.

Talk about freedom of expression. These guys pulled out all of the stops when performing at the Grammy's this year. They had something to say about Trump's new immigration laws and they said it...on national television. This was the second best performance of the night, the first being Beyonce.

Wikileaks and Free Speech
This weeks chapter readings covered the topic of democratic expression and how it is affected when introduced into mass media. With the topic of free speech and censorship there is one tool that many are often led to since current news outlets are riddled with the ever growing "fake news" and this tool is called Wikileaks. This tool is a great source for those who want unmeddled news that does not have a political agenda. It is an unbiased, factual, and overall a great example of how news is supposed to be shared to the public. This is a tool that lets journalists and alike to report information and stories without worry of being labeled as a whistle blower. Free speech has been at risk for sometime now as those who report the true story are often hassled with keeping the information secret in order for certain parties to not risk public crucifixion.

The motion picture production code (Hays Code) was a list of moral guidelines that major studios had to abide by when releasing a motion picture. This Code existed between 1930 and 1968. For example no plots can consist of murder, theft, sex, adultery, and evil to name a few. These guidelines at first made it pretty much impossible to make an entertaining film, many films for a long period of time pushed the boundaries anyway. These were films guidelines before the rating system.

One of this weeks topics is freedom of expression. This right of ours is found in the bill of rights as part of the 1st amendments. This photo shows the official document where this is stated. The bill of rights was proposed on September 25, 1789, and adopted December 15, 1791. This specific right gives Americans the "right to express one's ideas and opinions freely through speech, writing, and other forms of communication but without deliberately causing harm to others' character and/or reputation by false or misleading statements." This along with many other rights and freedoms are what our country is founded on.

Public Relations
This week in class we are talking about public relations. What we have in this picture is we have the famous camel that has been used for so much advertising with the camel cigarettes. This picture is using the camel to represent how smoking can affect your health. This could be an example of lobbying within public relations. This picture can be used to persuade potential law makers into putting more health restrictions on cigarettes and gaining their vote for it

This weeks topic is public relations and the first thing I thought of was the commercials and ads we see every day. Public relations is defined as "the professional maintenance of a favorable public image by a company or other organization or a famous person". I believe this Dawn wildlife campaign commercial fits this perfectly. Following the massive BP oil spill, Dawn stepped in to help save the animals and wildlife by donating $1,000,000 to rescue efforts. They also used this product to clean the animals affected by the spill. This commercial clearly shows the company in a positive light and the public is giving off a great, meaningful message to its consumers.

In week twelve of Popular Culture we discussed Public Relations and Framing the Message. One early development of public relations has to do with The Barnum and Bailey Greatest Show on Earth. This was a circus show in which P.T. Barnum would use exaggerated public relation tactics to promote his show.  One example of this is he claimed that his show included a 161-year-old nurse of George Washington, but it was actually just an 80-year-old women. He would sometimes tell the stories behind his hoaxes in the newspaper, which just kept people more intrigued.

This week's chapter is called "Public Relations and Framing the Message" and discusses the origins and presence of public relations. This video is of the BP commercial released right after the gulf oil spill. At the time, BP needed to handle of the changing public opinion and did so by releasing this commercial less than two months after the spill began. In the commercial, BP apologizes and takes responsibility, but also takes a good amount of time discussing all the clean up efforts they helped organize. The commercial is an excellent example of PR.

Public relations can be used in a number of ways. In the well-known clothing line, Ralph Lauren, it was used in a time of absolute crisis and desperation. While the company has been the designers for the Olympics for many years, it used China as their manufactures. [1] To make up for their actions that many Americans deemed as wrong, public relations for Ralph Lauren vowed that the 2014 Olympic apparel would be made in the United States. [2]

The Greatest Show on Earth!
This week in class we are discussing public relations and ways to get a message across.  One type of public relations communication is publicity, which uses various media messages to spread information.  One of the first people to use publicity was Phineas T. Barnum.  He used exaggerations, fraudulent stories, and staged events to secure newspaper coverage.  He went from securing coverage for clients, to securing coverage for his American Museum, to finally securing coverage for his circus.  The image shown below is one of his exaggerated advertisements for his circus dubbed “The Greatest Show on Earth”.

Magazines
This week we are talking about magazines. What we have in this picture is we the video game "Destiny" which is an online first person RPG being advertised. You have the three main people you can choose from which is the Hunter (left), Titan(right) and Warlock (middle) fighting the taken king which is one of the added on DLC's. This can relate to class because this can be considered a leisure magazine to read for fun for people to catch up on video games. This can also be considered a targeted magazine for a specific audiences which would be targeted towards the video gamer audience.

Digital Magazines
Since the age of digital information media has become more sought out for since it has become conveniently accessible. As we have read throughout the chapters this semester we have discussed how media has gone from print to various digital devices. Since then people are more inclined to read up on their favorite magazines since it has either become free or because they do not have to run to their nearest magazine stand. Another benefit of this is that since the publishing cost has significantly gone down publishers now have the option to publish more which comes as a great benefit for the consumers.
