Janette Beckman + Faust + Afrika Bambaataa (regram) from FAUST (@faustnewyork) of Janette w/ final piece (@janettebeckman ) before we hung Janette Beckman's Hip Hop Mashup aka #JBMASHUP FAUST is a visual artist living in #NYC, his work is a response to the perpetually changing image of the city drawing on influences from #graffiti and #art #history. His work was featured in #leTag exhibition at the #grandpalais in #Paris and adorned the facade of #whiteBoxGallery in the #LES. Recently published in several noteworthy publications. He was drawn to this photo of #AfrikaBambaataa because he "loved his pose and boom box, emblematic of the era, but also the brick wall was apropos for the collaboration. The ideal surface of a graffiti artist." He wrote the word #hiphop in the background since "he's often regarded as the #GodFather of Hip Hop." Providing the negative space to collaborate and bring something to the image without overpowering or making the figure insignificant. Last Thursday July, 17th marked Pop Up Art Event's inaugural #ArtistSalonSeries, curated by Cey Adams, Janette Beckman cultivated by Juliet Silva Yee. The eclectic guest list was curated as well, when introducing the exhibit the organizers urged guests to engage in conversation with a stranger which led to interesting convo's about art, hip hop, history and NYC's culture then and now. Janette Beckman shot Keith Haring in the mid 1980's, who's work she admired from NYC subways and neighborhood walls. She was working for New York Daily News Magazine at the time. This was shot in his downtown studio one afternoon. "Every bit of his studio was covered in art,cutouts,paintings, drawing and graffiti. Keith was lovely and friendly" posing happily for a couple hours. The photo has brilliantly been reinterpreted by Cey Adams (@ceyadams), former creative dir. Of def jam recordings, also working and exhibiting along side #KeithHaring and #Basquiat among others. Keith and Cey were great friends so it only made sense for him to choose this piece for the #jbmashup Cey is always involved in something new and fresh- check out his site for updates.
