wallamcranesarchnemesis:
i'm about to reveal how much of a nerd i am, aren't i?
okay so you remember back during the ark evacuation when that exo, gaius devon, went on earth rolling news and called commander tell morrath an ape?
then general torrek mentioned something about how commander tell morrath had been involved in the excavation of a partially functioning medical laboratory in the ruins of eden.
i was curious about that so i did a little digging about whatever was found in that laboratory, and found a few articles by some alpha sector university history departments talking about it. it's all pretty hard to make out since they use a lot of medical jargon, but i have a friend studying medicine at university earth, and she helped explain things to me a bit. honestly, i'm still not sure i understood her properly

For that history ask game you reblogged, how about number 3? (That’s “what would be the first thing you look up if you had access to the Earth data net before the crash?” btw, for anyone who doesn’t feel like scrolling back to the original post)
wallamcranesarchnemesis:
it definitely has to be the process for making glowplas.
yes, yes, i know there is other more important knowledge that was lost with the earth data net crash, but the question is what's the FIRST thing i'd look up, not the only thing!
second would probably be whatever information they had on immune syndrome. from what i've heard, commander tell morrath's implanted web was made based on research that was uncovered from a digsite in eden. just imagine how much more information could have been discovered about us in the past, that we've lost all access to!

voices-of-history posts:
As you know I’m a major Myths geek! One of my favorite parts of Exo culture is the planets being named after myths. Tumblr is a huge treasure trove! Some of the site (if you can get past the glitches) are really well preserved! But that’s a post for another day! I went through a depression spell again the other day… and I was thinking about Icarus and well.. You know I felt like I could relate… I’ve always wanted to leave this planet.
so here we go
I wish I was winged
Large, feathers brushing the ground
Or smooth membrane
Scales and skin
Bouncing light
Meant to soar
Meant to dive
Meant to kill
But
      I
        Am
             Meant
                        To
                            Fall.
Crash toward land
While eagles circle above
Will they dive for the kill
As they were meant to?
Or will they leave my own hubris
As Icarus
Too close
Yet not enough to feel its warmth
I was never meant to fly.

Earthenby-notpromumordad to nextstephome
Thanks for your posts about Pro parents. As one myself - I'm already seeing one of my kids (professionally) drift away from me. Trying to continue sending supportive messages, trying to not lose them, but... On the bright side, one of my bio kids who went low/no contact has been sending me messages again, and has apparently actually told his partner about my existence! And explained why. Luckily, despite his partner being annoyed at the lie, recent newsie coverage has made it clear why, and they are still together. They don't have a lot of credits - he moved to the frontier - and previously my son told his partner I disaproved of that. I didn't, but it was the cover he used. Maybe I should be angry and hurt about the years I missed, but...they've decided to save up credits to come for a visit. I'm going to get to meet my grandkids!
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I, and all the ProParents out there, are very grateful for your posts in support of us. This is a trying time for us all - and if I'm honest, doesn't even seem real yet. I mean, Earth, part of Alpha Sector? Norms treating us like we exist?
There will be downsides, as you mentioned. We Proparents put everything into caring for our own kids and our adopted kids. We don't get to see them full time, but that doesn't mean we don't love and care for them. To have our kids abandon us for their 'true families' is heartbreaking, I won't pretend it isn't. But it's nice to know we have a community out there who supports us. Sorry, this turned into a bit of a ramble!
nextstephome:
Don't apologize for rambling! I always love getting asks like this. Just knowing that I was able to help make at least one person feel better is more than enough for me.
I'm so so happy for you that your son has gotten back in contact with you! I'm sure it doesn't erase all of the hurt between you, but it's definitely a start, especially knowing that they're planning to come visit you when they can!
I know it's heartbreaking to see your prokids start drifting away from you and you can tell me to nuke off if what I'm about to say is inappropriate, but this is how i think of it:
our current proparent system is broken, and it has been for a very long time. ten prokids for each proparent is just too many to be able to provide the kind of support that these children need.
i think it was wallamcranesarchnemesis who said it best in one of their posts a while back: "We have proparents, but they're only around for 2 hours a week, which means that while they're able to be there for the big things, the ones that we learn the most from actually tend to be the older children in our Homes/Next Steps...We are quite literally a society of children raising other children."
Please don't take this as me criticizing proparents or saying you're not doing enough! You're all massively overworked, and are being asked to do more than is humanly possible.
And as awful as it sounds to say this, those children who are pulling away from you are (hopefully) getting the kind of one-on-one support that a proparent can't provide them, and their absence means that you now have the time and resources to provide more support to your other kids who need you more now than ever. It means you can spend more time with your own families as well!
I know it doesn't make the hurt go away completely, but hopefully this perspective makes it a little easier to deal with?
Much love from me, and keep being amazing!

question from futurepropal to junglequeenstaleeeea:
Hey I saw you're in a next step! I've never heard of the show you've got your username from, what vid channel is it on? also just wanted to say like. I think i'm a bit older than you but i'm in a next step too and it does suck right now. Keep having nightmares that I'll be the last one left here :( Maybe even if there aren't people in your year group who feel like you do, people a bit older might get it? I guess the younger ones will still be hoping. Feel free to ignore this btw or just answer the first bit about the show you like if you want :)
junglequeenstaleeeea:
thank you for the ask! i'll admit i almost deleted it without even reading it because i've been getting so much bullshit in my askbox recently 🙄 either people hating on me for not kissing up to earth's perfect little poster girl, or treating me like i'm stupid because i'm not an adult.
i'm not really close with any of the older kids at my next step, but thank you for the suggestion. maybe i'll try talking to one of them. at any rate it will have to be better than talking to my nuking psychologist, who just keeps telling me i have to "let go of my anger" or whatever.
for your first question, my url is from an off-world vid series called stalea of the jungle! my prodad is one of those people who thinks that hospital earth's rules on what content minors are allowed to watch are too strict, so sometimes when we spend time together we watch vids that i'm not allowed to at next step.
though he always skips the most inappropriate parts, so it's not even that different from what i AM allowed to watch. but i still enjoy that time i get to spend with him. sometimes it feels like he's the only one that doesn't treat me like a total child.

anonymous Question for wallamcranesarchnemesis: I saw your response to the post by nukeitall about whether there'd be a second exodus and your reply was so great and insightful! I saw you tagged it saying we should wonder about the cultural shift instead. Could you explain what you mean by that or what kind of cultural shift you're expecting? I can see there might be some improvements in some areas of research now that off-worlder's are listening to people from Earth some more, and I'm hoping there will be less cruel jokes and stigma (and a move away from all the awful stuff HE allowed!) but I wondered if there's more to it than that?
wallamcranesarchnemesis:
Okay, this is going to be a bit of an infodump, and I'm sorry if it gets a bit confusing but I'll try my best to explain.
Long story short: Earth's culture is going to shift to align more with Alpha sector's culture.
Short story long:
The older a society tends to be, the longer the "adolescent" stage tends to be. For now, let's put aside Earth - Alpha sector has the oldest society among humans, and in their culture, 25 is the age of full legal majority, as opposed to the age of 18 on Earth. Marriage doesn't usually happen until about 30 in Alpha Sector - this is because the sector as a whole tends to be very wealthy, which means that parents can afford to support their children for a longer period of time, allowing them to focus on their studies and setting up their careers in order to get a proper start in life before having to stand on their own two feet.
On the other end of the spectrum is Epsilon sector, where people tend to get married right out of high school (or sometimes before they even graduate) - this is because their worlds are still in the rapid building phase and aren't very wealthy. Their populations are still very low, and so young people are encouraged to have children very young in order to increase the birth rate and help expand their society.
Now, what does this have to do with the culture on Earth?
It's because Earth culture is extremely different to the rest of humanity.
In the other sectors, children are by and large raised by their parents - socially, it's their parents' jobs to teach them right from wrong, and teach them the social expectations of their planet and sector.
Earth is different because the majority of our population doesn't have our parents around to raise us. We have proparents, but they're only around for 2 hours a week, which means that while they're able to be there for the big things, the ones that we learn the most from actually tend to be the older children in our Homes/Next Steps. The principals of our Homes and Next Steps are too busy to give us individual attention, our teachers are too busy teaching us to teach us about social mores. We are quite literally a society of children raising other children.
And then, we're thrust out into the world at 17 (if we're going by personal birthdays and not Earth's official method of counting age) and we're expected to be fully independent. This is why our culture tends to align more with some of the newer sectors rather than Alpha Sector - because we don't have that extended age of adolescence.
Okay, so what does this have to do with your question?
At the current moment, the majority of adult Earth citizens are those with Immune Syndrome - because the norm-born children of handicapped parents as well as the norm-born siblings of handicapped children whose parents came to Earth with them will almost all move to other sectors once they've grown up. As a result, Earth's culture is currently holding steady, because like I said earlier, most of Earth's population was raised in Homes and Next Steps.
As more and more parents come to Earth with their handicapped children in the future, more and more handicapped kids are going to be raised by parents who will pass on their own morals and values from Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon sectors.
So for the first few decades, Earth culture is going to be fluctuating wildly, and some new social norms are going to be born as the cultures of five different sectors find a way to coexist with each other - it will actually be rather similar to what happens on frontier planets, which have open colonization from all sectors.
Then, as the other immune syndrome compatible planets start opening for colony ten and then open colonization, the parents and handicapped children from other sectors will start slowly being funneled to those planets, and the majority of new people moving to Earth will tend to be parents from Alpha sector.
So as more and more Earth children are raised by Alphan parents, our culture will naturally shift to align more with Alpha sector.
We will start to notice a longer and longer age of adolescence on Earth. It will start first with just the children who are raised by their parents.
But, as more parents come to Earth with their babies, it means there will be less children in Nurseries, Homes, and Next Steps. This means a less overwhelmed system, and more adults to tend to individual children and babies! So eventually, children who are raised as wards of Hospital Earth will also enjoy a longer age of adolescence. The first thing to change will probably be Earth's official method of counting age, and children will have one extra year in Next Step. Then eventually, as more resources are freed up, it might mean that wards of Hospital Earth will continue to have support even after they've started University. It won't be from their Next Steps, but perhaps other social support structures.
All this is going to happen rather quickly in the grand scheme of things, but it'll be more of a slower change on a personal level. It will take place over the course of several decades, and you and I probably won't live to see the end stage, but all in all, it's a good change for the people of Earth, and the future of handicapped babies.

nextstephome:
Shoutout to all the proparents by the way.
It's not an exaggeration to say that we as a planet are going through a collective trauma right now as we adjust to our new normal, and proparents are having to deal with not only their own traumas, but those of their kids as well
So shoutout to proparents who have to help their kids navigate being claimed by their families while remembering their own parents who told them to nuke off when they reached out at 14
Shoutout to proparents whose kids are dealing with jealousy because they have classmates or friends in their next step who are getting their happily ever after
Shoutout to proparents whose bio kids cut off contact when they turned 18 out of shame, and are now going through the same thing again with their prokids who want nothing to do with them now that they have "real" families
Our world would be so much worse without the amazing proparents who love us and provide us with the stability we aren't getting from the other adults in our lives.
I know you're going through a lot right now, and I know you're hurting, but I want you to know I see you, and I appreciate everything you're doing for your kids.

I know the first working portal wasn't invented until the early 23rd century, but thaddeus alexander was born in the mid 22nd century and every day i fantasize about travelling back in time and strangling him at birth /hj
Also, i've heard of dezi mitchell before from one of my next step friends who went art for his university course! I'm not usually one for art but even I can tell how talented she is. I wanted to buy one of her paintings but I don't think my partner would be very happy with me if i did.
25thcenturyrpffan asked wallamcranesarchnemesis:
Are you doing yuletide this year or are you too busy? IDK how you feel about historical rpf, but I don't know anyone else who cares at all about like. anyone from the 22nd century, much less all my favorite anti-war activists (Eowyn Riggsby is so underrated!) and I'd love to coordinate nominations if you want
(also, do you have a favorite 22nd century activist?)
wallamcranesarchnemesis:
hi, thanks for the ask!
i've personally never been into rpf, although in past years i've usually participated in the Defenders big bang event
this year i unfortunately won't have any time to participate in any fandom events though. i'm an archaeologist on one of the Earth teams (please don't ask which one) and what with so many of the off-world archaeology teams preparing to go on the Fortuna expedition, things have been understandably very hectic at work. my team leader has had me picking up a lot of extra responsibilities, so i'll likely be very inactive on here for the forseeable future
as for 22nd century activists - sorry, that's not really my area of expertise 😅 i tend to hyperfixate more on the mid twentieth century, with the space race and all that.
in case you hadn't already guessed from my url...the 22nd century is a bit of a sore subject for me.

Snowonwinter asked onesmallstep
So, did you ever find out what the Changelings thing was about? I'm looking at doing pre history next year, and will be heading to earth for my foundation year - is that something I need to know about? I can't find any information by searching.
onesmallstep:
buddy, i have learned enough about changelings and runners in the past week to give me nightmares for a lifetime.
from what i can gather based on the helpful links that other users on this site have sent me, it's a topic that's not very well known outside of Earth, and it's not going to be covered in your foundation course, if that's what you're asking.
that being said, i do think it's something that people in every sector should learn about, ESPECIALLY history and medical students who are coming to Earth for their studies. it's one of truly dark parts of human history, but it's something that Earth children have to come to terms with at a very young age, something that continues to affect them to this day, and as guests on their planet the least we can do to show them proper respect as our hosts is to not turn a blind eye to all the terrible things that have been done to them.
[HERE] is a helpful link from University Earth America, for an article titled "Changelings and Runners: How a centuries-old tragedy continues to affect the children of today"
trigger warnings for: child abduction, murder, generational trauma, genocide, systemic discrimination, dehumanisation

wallamcranesarchnemesis:
we're probably not going to have another exodus century, so don't worry op.
In the first place, they're only planning on opening three more immune sydrome campatible planets for now - one each for beta, gamma, and delta sectors.
The main reasons for opening more planets for us is to cut down on portal distances and portal relays for newborns, as well as to allow parents to move with their babies while still staying in the same sector, thus limiting the amount of culture shock they have to experience.
Epsilon sector worlds are still in their rapid building phase, and don't have a high enough population yet to warrant an immune sydrome compatible world, so their babies will continue to be sent to whichever planet is most practical until a time comes when they're able to establish their own planet
So what does this mean for Earth?
First - there's always going to be people moving to Earth because we're Alpha sector's designated planet for people with Immune Syndrome.
Second - for the next few centuries at least, there are going to be parents from other sectors who are going to choose to move to Earth instead of their own sector's immune syndrome planet because they don't want to settle on a "frontier" stage planet, and the culture shock/distance is worth it to them to live somewhere that has the comforts of a more established society like Earth
Third - the population of Earth is expected to explode within the next few decades as it becomes more common for parents to keep custody of their immune syndrome babies, and a good portion of those parents are going to be bringing their other children along with them to Earth. This means that even once the three other planets open for colonization, Earth's population is probably still going to be higher than it is right now, becase it's still going to be several decades until the new worlds go into open colonization (remember, they still have to go through colony ten before that)
So we'll be perfectly fine, op
#what you should be worrying about instead is the cultural shift probably
nukeitalll:
let's play a game called what thought keeps you up at night, i'll go first
Even though i logically know it's great that they're going to be opening up more planets for colonozation that are compatible with our immune systems i'm terrified of the idea of another exodus century
#personal #a lot of my friends from next step have mentioned wanting to become colonists #and i'm happy for them but at the same time i don't want to lose them #i don't want earth to be abandoned #i love it here #it's my home #someone who knows more about history and stuff #please reassure me?

godsareoverrated asked radiation-nursery-rhymes:
wait is PoP an abbreviation for Parliament of Planets? I dozed through civics classes because I figured I would never be allowed to vote.
unrelated, I saw you post a lot of politics stuff. any tips on how to get informed on candidates and such quickly?
radiation-nursery-rhymes:
Yeah, PoP does stand for Parliament of Planets!
I totally understand about not paying attention in civics classes, and you're definitely not the only one in this boat.
Thankfully, University Earth America realized this and have set up a page on their website with a really good crash course for those of us of voting age: [link]. This page gives a quick rundown of all the people who are going to be running as representatives of Earth in the PoP, what they're going to be campaigning for, relevant experience, etc. They also have a pretty good bibliography, so you can fact check them in case you're worried about biases towards any particular candidates.
On a broader scope, below are some links if you want to learn more about politics in general. A lot of these are going to be from offworld sites, but since you're interested in learning about candidates quickly, I'm guessing you're already out of Next Step and have unrestricted access to the wider net.
University Asgard on the Rights and Responsibilities of Parliament of Planets Representatives: [x]
University Zeus on the history, reasoning, and importance of the Military's stance of political neutrality: [x]
A quick and dirty rundown of Joint Sector High Congress and what situations require their intervention, by University Demeter: [x]
How Hospital Earth continues to fail its wards, and who must be held accountable, a comprehensive history by University Earth Asia, written in cooperation with University Earth Africa, University Earth America, University Earth Australia, and University Earth Europe: [x]
I hope this answers all your questions! Sorry, I know I've been posting about politics a lot recently, but I didn't actually go to school for it, and a lot of my knowledge of this stuff is a result of me hyperfixating what with the upcoming elections and wanting to make sure I'm properly informed. So please take everything I say with a grain of salt and make sure to do your own research as well!
I've tried my best to be as accurate as possible but if I made any mistakes in my answer, please let me know.

talkarchaeologytome:
Sometimes I forget that this isn't common knowledge but did you guys know that the digsite federation runs youtube livestreams for the broadcast channels of all their digsites?
The livestreams don't really get a lot of views since they tend to be a bit boring, given there's no visual (they just have a blue background with the DSF logo), but sometimes when a rescue or something happens, they upload the highlights as videos on their channels.
I think most people have listened to the Solar 5 rescue at this point, but here's another one that I found really interesting: [link]
Not too long before the Carrington Event, a skyscraper collapsed in New York Main and Rono Kipkibor's Cassandra 2 team were buried.
They were dug out by tag leader Jarra from Asgard 6.
Give it a listen, it's pretty fascinating.
flufflebrainedfreak:
Oh, I saw how friendly she was with Cassandra 2 during the zulu dig but I always thought it was just because her lecturer was friends with them! I didn't realize she'd helped save their lives!
It's so cool hearing how different she was during this event than she is as Commander Tell Morrath. Like, she sounds a little nervous throughout the whole thing?
But you can also tell she really knows what she's doing. I don't know a lot about archaeology, but if Earth 19 let her keep tagleading when they arrived, that must mean she was doing a good job, right?
talkarchaeologytome:
Yeah, she's kind of become a legend in the archaeology circles, and it's not even mostly about her military rank and her involvement in alien contact. Like, the more I hear about her the more wild it gets???
She started going to dig sites when she was eleven?
She learned how to fly from Valeska Orlova's husband????
She became a next of kin when she was 17?
Guys I don't know how to stress to you that Commander Tell Morrath has literally never been normal.
