the Wrestler: Volume 26, 2009
SPOTLIGHT ON…
C.M. PUNK
DON’T BOTHER ASKING what “C,M.” stands or … Ditto with the Pepsi logo… Stories are as unpredictable as the man himself… Born Phillip Brooks in Chicago, Illinois, on October 26, 1978… Probably not a good idea to call him Phill, either… Indy darling whose reputation preceded him by years… More than lived up to billing since joining WWE in 2006… First experience in wrestling was as part of backyard promotion…
[February 2022: Punk does battle with Colt Cabana in IWA: Mid-South. Punk would hold IWA: M-S gold on several separate occasions.

Grew to love and appreciate the nuances of the sport there… Began going by the name C.M. Punk at that point… Worked as part of the Chick Magnets tag team with C.M. Venom… Graduated from backyard fights to wrestling school in Chicago… Trained under Ace Steel at the Steel Domain school… Wrestled throughout the Midwest while with Steel Domain… Began competing with and against a man named Scott Colton, who was also at Steel Domain… In following years, Punk and Scott “Colt Cobana” Colton would have many encounters… Duo hooked up with Chuckee Smooth, Adam Pearce, and Dave Prazak to form the Gold Bond Mafia… Stable made its way through the indy promotions of the Midwest… Emerged as a budding leader in the indies… Made the move to IWA: Mid-South and quickly rose through the ranks… Heald championship gold on seven different occasions… Developed feuds with Caban, again, and fellow newcomer Chris Hero… Had falling-out with Mid-South in early-2003… Didn’t affect his status as a hot commodity on the indy circuit, though… Began making appearances for Ring of Honor at the same time… eventually reconciled with Mid-South… Appeared briefly with TNA… Never found a comfortable place with the promotion… Allowed to flourish in ROH… Nearly captured the inaugural Pure title in ROH… Lost to A.J. Styles in the finals… Won the ROH tag team championship with Cabana twice… Team was called the Second City Saints… Was a top star in ROH… Position brought new responsibility… Hired as head trainer of ROH in 2003, while continuing to compete… Involved in a legendary series of matches over the ROH title with Samoa Joe… Two of the three matches ended in 60-minute draws… Joe retained the title with a victory in match three… Second match if the series is hailed as an epic encounter… Gained the attention of Vince McMahon and WWE and given a series of tryouts… Signed developmental deal in June of 2005… In a rare move, was able to continue competing for ROH after signing with WWE… Worked out to his ultimate advantage… Defeated Austin Aries to capture the ROH championship in mid-2005… Would prove to be his only ROH singles title run… Turned against the ROH fans who had made him such an iconic figure… Threatened to take the ROH title with him to WWE… Mocked the title by signing his WWE contract on top of it…. Fans and wrestlers alike implored him to leave with respect… Mick Foley intervened on behalf of the fans… Continued to disrespect the strap and the ROH fans…

Dropped the title to James Gibson (WWE’s Jamie Noble) in a four-corners match…
[February 2003: Punk and Cabana take their feud to Ring of Honor, where Punk competes for ROH’s Pure wrestling championship.

January 2004: With James Mitchell at the helm, Punk and Julio Dinero form The Gathering in TNA. However, TNA creative runs out of ideas for the tandem and Punk’s tenure in TNA is cut short.

Last singles match with ROH came in August 2005, two-out-of-three falls loss to Cabana… Sent out as a hero nevertheless… Returned one more time to ROH as a surprise competitor… With Bryan Danielson won a tag match at the promotion’s Unscripted II event… From then on it was all WWE… Assigned to Ohio Valley Wrestling developmental territory… First match for OVW was a losing effort in a six-man tag team match… Made his OVW television debut in September 2005, defeated Danny Inferno… Finished the match with a ruptured eardrum courtesy of an Inferno right fist… Beat Kenny Doane to win the OVW TV title… Defended the title in a brutal feud with Brent Albright… Both were hellbent on destroying the other… Dropped the title to Aaron Stevens in a three-way match with Albright… Cost Albright a shot at the title… Feuded well into into 2006… Paired up as a team during that time as well… Gained crowd support in early-2006… Albright became OVW champion when title was vacated by Matt Cappotelli…
[March 2004: Punk’s willingness to bend the rules serves him well in his match against A.J. Styles in the International Wrestling Cartel.

April 2004: Battling the respected Bryan Danielson–With Rick Steamboat serving as special guest referee–earns Punk few friends among the Ring of Honor faithful.

Won the OVW championship from Albright in May 2006… Called up to make an appearance for WWE in the meantime as part of John Cena’s team of gangsters as WrestleMania 22 in hometown of Chicago… Real work was still to be done in OVW… Teamed with Seth Skyfire in July 2006 to win the OVW Southern tag team title…
[April 2006: To the delight of the fans, Punk sheds plenty of blood in this dog-collar match against Jimmy Rave in Ring of Honor.

April 2007:Punk gets close to winning the “Money In The Bank” match at WrestleMania 23, but Ken Kennedy ultimately escapes with the briefcase.

First man to hold two OVW titles simultaneously… Began feuding with Skyfire as a result of team miscommunication… Situation went from bad to worse… Scheduled defense of the OVW title against Skyfire didn’t happen… Skyfire’s replacement, Chet the jet, filled in and won the title,,, Went from two titles to zero titles in a month’s time… Called up to WWE’s main roster shortly thereafter… Beat Stevie Richards at an ECW house show in his debut match… Won television debut over ECW original Justin Credible… First major ECW feud was with Mike Knox… Feud fueled by Knox’s clothing-impaired girlfriend Kelly Kelly… Moved on to bigger matches quickly in ECW…Fought in the “Elimination Chamber” match at December to Dismember… Qualified shortly thereafter for the “Money In The Bank” ladder match at Wrestlemania 23… Failed to capture the guaranteed contract… Competed on all three WWE brands over the next few months… Briefly joined the ill-fated New Breed faction… Ended up destroying the group from the inside… Reached the finals of a tournament to determine the new ECW champion… Was slated to face Chris Benoit at Vengeance… Ended up losing to Johnny Nitro at the event… Captured the ECW title in early-September 2007 by defeating Morrison on TV… Retained the title throughout the rest of 2007… Lost the gold to Chavo Guerrero Jr. in January 2008… Once again, won a spot in the “Money In The Bank” ladder match at WrestleMania… Won the guaranteed contract for a World title shot in the coming year… Year kept getting better… Nearly became the 2008 King of the Ring, losing to William Regal in the finals… Drafted to the Raw brand in June… Crashed in his titled shot only a week later…
[March 2008: At WM 24, Punk captures the “Money In The Bank,” which he later uses to defeat Edge for WWE’s World title on Raw.
Shocked the world by defeating a battered and unsuspecting Edge to capture the WWE World title… Immediately called out by the likes of John Bradshaw Layfield… Unlikely champ not given the respect earned… Set to defend the title in a “Championship Scramble” match at Unforgiven in September… Attacked prior to the match… A Randy Orton kick to the head forced him to vacate the strap… Could not recapture the title in a rematch with his replacement and new champion, Chris Jericho… Still had a touch for winning gold… Captured the WWE World tag team title with Kofi Kingston in late-October… Successfully defended the championship through November… Came to the aid of Batista during a match overseas… Rekindled his disdain for Orton in the process… Popular WWE’s European tour in late-2008… Probably best to just call him “champion.”
[July 2008: Punk successfully defends his title against Batista, but later loses the best after Chris Jericho takes his place in the Raw Championship Scramble match at Unforgiven.

Love these photos of Punk. I'd imagine this what he'd be doing if he was ever caught on a ring camera
