What is your favourite film?

I don’t like shoot-‘em-ups; they remind me too much of real life. I like a good romantic comedy. It takes my mind off the stress of my job. My all-time favourite is Some Like It Hot.

Interview with Butler, Artemis Fowl Files

I think there is a lot to unravel about Butler’s favourite movie. I am definitely biased, but I adore this movie to bits. It definitely has its flaws (it is from 1959 after all), but it’s one of the best comedies out there.

What’s so good about this movie and how does it tie up with Butler as a person? I’m glad you asked.

The movie starts with a car chase between cops and gangsters through the streets of Chicago in 1929. The men are masculine, stiff, never crack a joke. Then we meet Joe and Jerry. Two men in a jazz band. They bicker, they joke, they are two best friends who witness a crime (and get away). To get away, they dress up as women, join an all-female band, and encounter further complications along the way.

Why do we watch movies? Among other things to escape our reality. We can explore situations and choices we can’t make in real life, because they are impossible or not politically correct. It’s wish-fulfilment. So, what fascinates Butler about this movie?

The first thing is Joe and Jerry witnessing the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre. Those two men would never hold up in real life (aka Butler’s reality). They’d be mowed down in no time. In the movie, however, they make a daring escape. For someone like Butler, who doesn’t like violence, that must already be a nice change to the norm. The fact that they then dress up as women to get away from the Mob? Freaking hilarious.

And then there is the problematic deception of Joe making Sugar fall in love with him. Joe is pretending to be a millionaire, tricking Sugar into doing everything in her power to seduce him. Now, this is not cool at all. But from Butler’s perspective, a servant all his life, doing everything to please/protect/serve his employers? Of course, he’d enjoy the thought of someone serving him for a change, a pretty woman trying to seduce him (even if he’d never do this himself). It’s a 2-hour long movie. In the end, he is still the butler, and the movie is a nice little fantasy for him to escape his life.

And that’s why Butler likes this movie so much.

But everything changed when the war on Gaza began. Our house, which we built with strength and effort before the war, was destroyed.

My mother-in-law suffers from serious lung infections and chronic diseases, and we find it difficult to provide appropriate treatment for her, especially in the winter and the bitter cold. She is part of our family after losing her husband. We are now without shelter, moving from one place to another, and struggling to survive. Today we have no income, no life, and no work. We are determined to rebuild our dreams, secure our future, and rebuild our home. We cannot do this alone and we need your help in building our lives. When abled people are involved, the concept of "doing it once in a while for a few seconds doesn't mean you can do it consistently on command like it's nothing" is easily understood.

For example, if someone is able to walk outside without a jacket in the cold to get the mail, everyone would easily understand that they'd still need a jacket if they were outside for a prolonged period of time. If someone is able to hold their breath underwater for a few seconds, everyone would easily understand that they'd still need an oxygen tank in order to stay underwater indefinitely.

But when disabled people are involved, that concept is somehow forgotten. You can stand for a few seconds? You must not actually need that wheelchair. You can socialize once in a long while if the conditions are exactly right? You must not actually struggle to socialize and any struggle you think you have is just fear and negativity. You can be physically active for an hour on a good day? You must not actually be too disabled to work. You have a lot of knowledge on a topic because it's a special interest of yours? You must be "smart" and any bad grades you get are because you're lazy.
