AUTHORS NOTE: this is an original story!! please do not plagiarize.
The sudden crash from behind sent a shiver down my spine as the screeching sound of metal meeting metal echoed through the air.
Recapping to before the accident… It was late at night, kind of. It was now 11:30pm and I still hadn’t had dinner. My mom was working a late shift and there wasn’t much at our house that I could eat for dinner.
I stared at my phone while scrolling back and forth through apps, the tv lit up my face and the couch, and the sound of the movie echoed throughout the living room. I finally decided to get up and go get some food before it got too late.
I grabbed my keys from the kitchen counter and made my way to the hallway to put on my shoes. I walked through the door and the air was crisp, it was the type of cold that each breath formed a frosty cloud. As I slid into my car, the icy chill immediately made me shiver uncontrollably, but I quickly shook it off, turned on the engine, and set off towards the restaurant, the warmth gradually filling the space around me.
As I made my way down the streets, I turned my radio on and just decided to listen to whatever was playing since it wasn’t a long drive. As I stopped at a red light, I noticed the serene, empty streets around me, the quiet stillness of the night accentuated by the soft glow of streetlights reflecting off the snow-covered sidewalks.
Suddenly, I felt my car move forward as someone rear-ended me. I glanced in my rearview mirror and saw a grey car behind me, its headlights glaring in the dim light. I was so in shock I couldn’t move or get out of my car. I look at my rearview mirror once again and now there’s no one in the driver’s seat. A soft knock on my car window startled me, and when I looked over, I saw a boy about my age standing there, his brown hair slightly tousled and falling over his eyes, giving him a somewhat mysterious look in the dim light.
I rolled down my window, removed my seatbelt, and managed to say, "Hi," in a shaky voice, my breath visible in the cold air. The boy smiled slightly and said, "Hey, are you okay? I am so sorry about this. I’ll cover all damages” My heart pounded in my chest as I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. "I think so," I replied, my voice still unsteady. "It just happened so fast." I could feel the cold air seeping into the car, mingling with the warmth of my breath as I spoke.
I opened the car door and stepped outside, feeling the crisp night air against my skin. "I guess we should exchange insurance information," I said, extending my hand. "I'm Y/N, by the way." He took my hand with a firm yet gentle grip and smiled. "Nice to meet you, Y/N. I'm Christopher.” I couldn't help but notice how sincere he seemed. His demeanor was calm and reassuring, making me feel a bit more at ease despite the situation.
After we exchanged our insurance information, Christopher looked at me with a reassuring smile. "I'll keep in touch," he said. We both nodded and turned to leave, heading back to our cars. As I drove away, I couldn't shake the feeling that this wouldn't be the last time I'd see him. There was something about our brief encounter that felt unfinished, like our paths were meant to cross again.
I decided not to go to the restaurant after all. I headed home… Instead, I raided the cabinets for some chips and apple juice. I took my snacks to my room and sat on my bed, eating while I thought about everything that had happened. The events of the night replayed in my mind, and I couldn't help but wonder what might come next.
I couldn't get Christopher out of my head. His piercing blue eyes had a depth to them that seemed to hold countless secrets, and that beautiful smile was warm and inviting. His sandy brown hair was slightly messy from the wind, giving him a casual, effortlessly mysterious look. Every detail of his face replayed in my mind, making it impossible to focus on anything else.
As I sat there, lost in thought, my phone buzzed next to me, lighting up the room with a soft glow. I glanced at the screen and saw a text from an unknown number. Curiosity got the best of me, and I picked it up. The message read, "Hey Y/n, it's Chris." My heart skipped a beat. His name on my screen brought back the memory of his face and how he looked at me, making the night feel even more surreal.
