Did you know Turkey had its own Isle of Dogs? Because I didn’t, and I’m spiraling.
In 1910, the Ottoman government decided that the stray dogs of Istanbul—who had long been a part of the city’s soul—were a “problem.” Thousands of them were rounded up and exiled to Sivriada, a barren island in the Marmara Sea.
No shelter.
No food.
No way off.
The dogs howled for days. Some threw themselves into the sea trying to swim back. Most died of starvation, heat, and despair. People in Istanbul reportedly heard their cries carried by the wind.
Later that year, a major earthquake hit the city. Locals said it was divine punishment.
Sivriada has been uninhabited ever since. No hotels. No snack bars. Just rocks, ruins, and silence.
Anyway, if ghosts exist, they definitely have paws.
