I lost my father to Pokemon Go and I regret so many life decisions. I’m the one who told him about the game. I’m the one who initially encouraged him. What have I done?

Now he starts every phone call with a Pokemon update. He gets all the names wrong and asks me what a Dragonite is called every time he brings up the “fat fighting orange dragon”

It’s gotten so bad he’s started watching the anime on Netflix. Help.

“Only when we can’t find someone smarter to ask the questions,” Gleb quipped with a good-natured grin. “The band starts at 7:30 - I’d come a little earlier if you want a good seat.”

There wasn’t a bad seat in the house - not acoustically, anyway. He remembered the building of the stage. He hadn’t known a thing about building, but he knew about acoustics and he just wanted a place his college-aged, performing self would be sick with envy over. But if Jonathan wanted a place where he could surreptitiously play Pokemon or bring friends or maybe talk to the owner… there were definitely bad seats for those things. Anything by the door, for example…

“We open back up at 6:30. I’ll see you then, Jonathan?”

“I’m sure you’re plenty smart enough,” Jonathan chuckled, nodding. “I’ll be here closer to 7:00, then.”

Now he felt the need to find a change of clothes, a shower, and anything else to make him look less like the awkward dork he felt like. But he was certainly looking forward to seeing Gleb the band. He decided he’d settle for swinging by a bookstore and freshening up as much as he could in some bathroom.

“I’ll be here, Gleb.”

Gleb remembered when Niantic set up their Pokestops and Gyms and how it didn’t necessarily increase his patronage, it certainly increased the number of cellphones out. It had lasted maybe a year and until now, Gleb had forgotten that The Nevsky Prospekt was a goldmine for Pokemon fans. Releasing Jonathan’s hand, Gleb nodded. 

“Should be good,” he said. “I’m excited - but whether that’s because it’s one less trivia night or open mic for me to MC…”

He laughed at his own joke. Groaning, he realized he’d probably gone all day or more without having a real conversation besides taking and giving orders. Talk about birds of a feather…

“Oh, trivia night? And you MC? I’ll definitely be back for that. And a bunch of my students would love an open mic, so I’ll send them your way.”

Jonathan was fully prepping himself to wander nearby bookstores and make his way back for a show. And he was certainly a sucker for trivia. Gleb also seemed nice. This was the first summer in a while he didn’t have summer classes, and what he was remembering is he hadn’t spoken to another human like this in a full week. That’s not healthy.

“So when do I come back around for this band?”

FAKE DATING PROMPTS. some of these aren’t strictly fake dating, but fall into the same category! make sure to specify which muse is which, when applicable.

muse a and muse b are good friends, but after a freelance photographer catches a photo of them holding hands and shares it, the whole world seems to think they’re together.

muse a and muse b pretend to date for a week as a prank on their friends and family.

muse a escapes a creepy guy at a bar/restaurant by pretending they’re dating muse b (a random stranger).

muse a asks muse b to pretend to date them to make their ex/crush jealous.

Gleb laughed. He extended a hand to the man to shake. Of course, he didn’t live here but Gleb did. He lived alone, save Sergei, and somehow - pet deposit aside - apartments didn’t really count dogs. 

“I think I would have noticed if you did.”

“Gleb Vaganov. This is my place. We’ve gotta close up so the staff can rest and we can transition to the bar space. I’d tell you to come back, but it probably won’t be quiet enough to do… whatever you’re doing on your phone. It’s a live band tonight if that sort of thing interests you though.”

Jonathan took it gladly, chuckling. “I may come back. I’ve just been playing Pokemon Go. But, the university is closed and this is the first conversation I’ve had besides ordering drinks in way too long.”

“I don’t get out much, but I’m sure I’ll enjoy a band.”

Gleb did not play video games. Growing up, his parents had been very old-school about what activities they’d encourage. Video games didn’t make the cut. As an adult, he had other priorities. He leaned against the bar, scanning Jonathan up and down. A smile quirked Gleb’s lips.

“Maybe, but when there’s a delay on the yellow line and it’s 2 AM, pretend ass-kicking isn’t going to make you feel safer.’ A pause. “So, what if we taught each other a little of each? Could be fun.” 

Jonathan furrowed his brow, contemplating. He probably should know how to fight. He’d been left on his own with whatever entertained him, so Jonathan had spent too much time alone with his video games. He could build, but that was about it.

“Deal. You teach me not to get my ass kicked, I’ll teach you video games. You’ll love it.”
