I started watching dexter and it’s genuinely wild shit. His inner monologue will be like ‘this would be considered a kind action, if I had a heart. But unfortunately, I feel nothing inside. My chest is an empty cage, with no warmth inside it’ and he’s doing some shit like saving a puppy that almost got run over or something

Its important to note that the available material to analyze characterizations is from the show, interviews, and cameos from the actors who played them.
George Rexstrew has spoken on how he felt Edwin’s parents would have been emotionally and physically distant as was customary for the era. Edwin being hell-bound throughout the series lends itself to his anxiety as it creates a rift in any interpersonal connection he attempts to make. We see this inform how he interacts with other characters in the show whilst expressing being uncomfortable with physical contact and emotional connection. Being withdrawn at school, being so alienated from his feelings he has no basis for why they are occurring, and not feeling comfortable engaging in physical contact with his friends. These points lead to the conclusion that the isolation he was raised in left him alienated from his peers and that was exacerbated by being queer in the Edwardian era and his time in hell.
We also see the dynamics that play out in the show where Edwin is enthusiastic to participate in are one’s where he plays leadership/ guardian role. Think how he was the final say if they went to America to rescue Becky Aspin. How he stood at the head of the table at the Devlin house while de-briefing the team. As well as how Monty took on a timid persona to gain his trust. The Cat King also placated him by stating though he was older than Edwin he “wasn’t a daddy type.”
I would also like to note that all his love interests had to sit on the floor first. this is a directorial decision to indicate that they had to access vulnerability before he felt he could engage with them. Oftentimes where he takes a leader/guardian role. think monty, the cat king, simon, and charles.
In opposition, when it is Edwin’s time on the floor, or supine, he is actively being tortured, or sacrificed to hell, or moments away from being torn to pieces (again.) Even the stairwell scene, though he and Charles are both standing, he is still undergoing extreme duress.
Charles rowland is an interesting character to the degree the show goes to ensure we have no basis to what he actually desires. He was not tempted by Angie the sea monster, the Cat King whose “kingdom is all about want and pleasure” is utterly disinterested in him, and the night nurse herself states she has no understanding of why he chooses to remain on Earth. (That is her JOB) the closest we -as the audience- get to his internal motivations is in ep 6 when are presented with the conclusion on the night of his death and have to make the inference that it might be the reason he chooses to stay. As that is what he shouted to the night nurse on the cliff. At this point i would also like to note he never states that he chooses to stay for his internal reasons it is all matter of fact. I am a Dead Boy Detective instead of i want to help people/ i want to solve cases/ i want to stay here.
what we can see however is who he chooses to surround himself with and what he does in their presence. this is also the only time we see him turn down a proposed journey in the entirety of the series.
Both crystal and Edwin are straight forward brash stubborn individuals who are quick to enlist the help of people surrounding them to ensure the success of their personal ventures. I would go as far to say that he relies on these qualities to maintain a sense of familiarity he otherwise doesn’t believe he would have access to. This allows him to circumvent his own desires in the relationships he “maintains.” He is quick to subsume an apprenticeship role with both of them.
In these relationships he is exemplified in going to extreme lengths to preform to the desires of the people around him. This is something that may be rooted in his upbringing. When we are in the Devlin house in ep. 3 we can ascertain that there were oftentimes elaborate justifications or “rules that were broken” given to him as to why he underwent domestic violence at the hands of his father.
It is for the reasons listed i firmly believe charles prefers a “role” in the dynamic where he can fulfill the desires of his partner and abide by their rules. Whilst Edwin prefers to maintain a “guardianship role.”
Together i believe they satisfy deep psychological wounds that developed in adolescence and warped the ways they want future romantic prospects to unfold. Though this covers most of what was outlined, i would be remiss to not mention their 70 year age difference and the fact that Edwin is hell-bound as additional factors in their unhealthy codependent romance with a side of power imbalance to live.

i’ve seen a couple of au’s where simon leaves hell w edwin, but one thing i’ve thought about because of it is: what if he and edwin met again the first time around and escaped?
i’ve mostly thought about the potential angst of this and have been tempted to write it. i imagine they prolly met up a couple decades into hell and decided to try to escape together and when they finally do they meet and help charles (simon feeling some residual guilt over how he dies). i think they would have patched things up decades ago and so when they’re telling charles the story of how they died they just leave out the fact that simon’s the reason they’re dead. because of that charles would just assume that simon died in the same way as edwin did that night. now thirty four years have passed and you’re in some shit town in bumfuck america and you’re finding out your friend of thirty years is the reason you’re OTHER friend of thirty years is dead. like imagine the insane emotion turmoil of that? you’re angry because of course you’re angry but this is still your friend of thirty years what do you even do?

I feel like the reason Charles and Edwin were so quick to be friends is because they are the opposite of the other's killers.
All of the qualities that Edwin was bullied for (quiet, bookish, soft, blunt) are the reason Charles felt so comfortable with him even after he just got killed by his friends.
And the qualities that got Charles in so much trouble (stands up to bullies, different from others) are the reason Edwin felt so safe with him despite just coming back from hell.

“Edwin.”
“Edwin?”
“ ‘win, mate, are you okay?”
Finally, the Edwardian boy seemed to react to his pleas for any kind of response. With a gasp, that could have been lost to the wind for anyone that hadn’t spent the last three years of their non-life memorizing his every expression, Edwin seemed to collect himself, putting on the immovable mask of stiffness that had become so characteristic of him recently.
“Yes, Charles. I assure you, I am quite alright.”, he whispered, coming back to himself.
“Mate, you’ve been staring into the void for, what, ten minutes?”, he replied worriedly, not able to stop the words from tumbling out of his mouth on time. “What’s wrong?”
“I… I have?” Edwin mumbled, apparently to himself, and Charles’ frown deepened even more.
“Edwin, talk to me. I can tell something’s wrong, mate, and you’ve been acting all strange ever since we started…” Charles stopped his hurried train of thought, only for him to jump headfirst into another rail. “Mate, do you want us to leave this case? I’m sure we can find that old sword ‘nother way, we don’t’ve to go to that… that shithole of a town. We’ll tell that chap Roderick to fuck off, just-”
“Charles”, Edwin interrupted, “, it’s fine. I… I am aware of how much you truly desire this unique choice of weaponry, and, even though I would very much rather not have to roam a notable cemetery of spirits this late at night, I believe I can manage just fine. Do not worry about me.”
“Right. So, that’s it?” he questioned, a little skeptically. “Doesn’t sound like that much of a problem, does it? You can stay here if you like, I’ll handle this case on my own.”
“And what about the runes, Charles?” Edwin half-scolded, finally looking up from the empty space on the wall he had been contemplating so far and into Charles’ eyes. “You cannot risk to break a benign one accidentally, you could unleash unknown horrors upon the living nearby if that were to happen. And, even if you did manage to identify the correct runes, what assures you that there will not be one single spell on the outskirts of the town that gets you trapped in there alone, without any chance to communicate with me or our client?” he stood up, placing both of his neatly gloved hands on his desk with an exasperated gesture. “I am coming with you, Charles Rowland, whether you like it or not.”
Charles walked around the desk, aching to stand as close to Edwin as possible. Edwin, for his part, turned around with an eyebrow raised in that charming way of his, silently challenging Charles to deny his statement.
“Oi, of course I would like you to come!”, he exclaimed, only partly offended. “ ‘s just… You can talk to me, Edwin, ‘kay? If something, anything, happens to you during this case, we’ll leave it immediately; you just have to ask.”
A small, pleased smile crept its way into Edwin’s lips (if Charles didn’t know his friend this well, he would’ve said that he almost looked… guilty? Regretful?), and he clasped his hands in front of his torso.
“Well, that’s settled, then. Thank you, Charles.” Charles felt a grin taking over his face, and he didn’t do anything to stop it. “I must head out, now, if you’ll excuse me.” Charles’ grin fell in less than a second.
Edwin was the best mate he could ever ask for. His kind, witty personality hidden beneath a perfectly serious Edwardian facade, the little quirks and gestures of his uptight body giving away bits and pieces of his real self, the one that wasn’t touched by a tragic technicality. However, Edwin was not the most social person, and Charles was made very aware of it at the beginning of their friendship.
For example, Edwin would freeze in his place every time they faced danger (or really any ill-intentioned person, or any surprising strangers, for that matter), or he would jump at the mere suggestion of an unwanted touch. Nevertheless, as Charles noticed after seven months of unprompted worrying and avoided conversatios, he always needed some time for himself, at least two or three nights every month in which he completely abandoned Charles in their shared office. And that wouldn’t be a problem, not at all, just if Edwin told him when and where he was leaving, instead of just ditching Charles as if Hell had come to drag him down again. He had tried to ask, one or twice, before it became clear that he wasn’t getting a real answer from his friend, not soon at least. But, well, it was worth trying, if it meant that he’d have the security to know Edwin was safe.
“Where are you going, mate?”, he asked, hoping that Edwin would finally open up after three years.
“I- St Hillarions, if you must know.”
What?
“What?”
“St Hillarions.” And, before Charles could even gather his words to interrupt: “Listen, Charles, I- You have been the utmost kind with me, and- I really do not deserve the amount of patience that you have gifted me with.”, he stuttered. And it’s wrong, Charles thought, Edwin Payne does not stutter. Confident, perfect Edwin Payne was never unsure of his sharp, witty arguments. “But I must ask you, do not press further on the matter. You… if anything happens, you know where to find me, but please, Charles, stay here. I will be back tomorrow.”
“Mate-”
“Stay. I promise, I’ll be here by sunrise.” Edwin promised, discreetly looking away into the window. Then, without further discussion, he stepped directly into the mirror with a practiced grace, avoiding Charles completely.
And, well, Charles Rowland isn’t anyone but Edwin’s loyal lapdog, so of course he stayed. He didn’t ask any more questions, nor did he follow his friend through the rippling mirror.

If you use AI, you're not a writer.
a writing competition i was going to participate in again this year has announced that they now allow AI generated content to be submitted
their reasoning being that "we couldn't ban it even if we wanted to, every writer already uses it anyway"
"Every writer"?
come on

Charles got murder by his friends and that probably fucked him up more then we realize.
Like, I know we saw some of it in the Dead Dragons episode, but I think there are more subtler hints to it.
Charles is supposed to be the 'friendly one' or the 'people person' of the two, but in the show, Edwin makes more relationships than Charles.
Edwin makes friends with Niko, Monty, and Crystal. He also has this weird understanding/truce with The Cat King, but Charles only really makes a relationship with Crystal, and that was because she came into his life.
Idk, I think it would be interesting if Charles was the more antisocial one of the two.

I love Edwin and Charles. They are such a good duo. I adored how they simply worked together like the best friends they are before Crystal showed up.
