A textbook called Grammatical Theory by Stefan Müller just came out, and man, he's dropping some truth bombs!
Tumblr media
Furthermore, the claim that first language acquisition is effortless and rapid when compared to second language acquisition is a myth as has been shown by estimations by Klein (1986: 9): if we assume that children hear linguistic utterances for five hours a day (as a conservative estimate), then in the first five years of their lives, they have 9100 hours of linguistic training. But at the age of five, they have still not acquired all complex constructions. In comparison, second-language learners, assuming the necessary motivation, can learn the grammar of a language rather well in a six-week crash course with twelve hours a day (500 hours in total).
And then...
Tumblr media
In Chapter 13, it was shown that all the evidence that has previously been brought forward in favor of innate linguistic knowledge is in fact controversial. In some cases, the facts are irrelevant to the discussion and in other cases, they could be explained in other ways. Sometimes, the chains of argumentation are not logically sound or the premises are not supported. In other cases, the argumentation is circular. As a result, the question of whether is innate linguistic knowledge remains unanswered. All theories that presuppose the existence of this kind of knowledge are making very strong assumptions.
In short: Human linguistic abilities aren't magic, and children aren't elves.

when you say "chat" isnt a pronoun, what makes it not a pronoun?
as in like, what is required (at least in english) for a word to count as a pronoun?
also ive heard some people say that "chat" (and similar words like "bro" or "sis") is a form of address, what do you think about that?
i could accept it as a form of address.
a pronoun has to be substituting for a noun or noun phrase. they also typically have an antecedent requirement, where that noun or NP is explicitly stated and establishes what the pronoun is referring to. "chat" in itself can act as that antecedent and be subsequently replaced by a pronoun. i could say, "chat is acting up. what do they think?" and be referring to the same group (namely, the chat); that's a functionally equivalent construction to "sis is acting up. what does she think?" in terms of noun (chat/sis) > pronoun (they/she).

The idea of english as a mother tongue is so strange to me, in my head english is how ppl communicate when there's no way in common to communicate, so english as a mother tongue sounds a bit like idk email as a mother tongue ykwim? Like english to me feels like the stuff that's used to fill the empty spaces between languages

One perk of learning a new language is spicing up rewatching of your favourite series in another language (it's also a great way to practice listening).
Currently watching ATLA (animated series) in Dutch.
Can't wait to hear the secret tunnel song, so far my favourite version is the Polish one.

as a welsh person i want you all to accept that W is a vowel because honestly it makes pronouncing acronyms so much easier. wlw becomes ‘ooloo’, wjec becomes ‘oojeck’, love yourselves and stop giving us shit when we tell you welsh has 7 vowels. english actually has 15 vowel sounds but because y’all only use 5 letters you have to rely on a spelling system devised by satan

i wanted to create something fun for langblr that will keep people actively using and advancing in their target languages. feel free to complete these either by writing or speaking, and please be open to constructive criticism, as well as giving it out in order to help everyone reach ~fluency. ♡. most importantly, have fun with these!
the object of this challenge is to write or speak a short segment on each of the 30 topics listed below. your answers don’t have to be too personal or revealing. upload them in a text or audio post and tag them as #30daylangblrchallege or just #langblr, or even tag me! the 30 topics are journal and writing prompts that i’ve collected, and are also great for keeping your own journal in your target language. there is no word or time limit, no deadlines. if you skip a day or two, it happens! i am looking forward to seeing your posts!
what should i write/talk about?
{01} write about your favorite animal {02} research your favorite time period and write a short segment on it {03} translate your favorite song into your target language {04} talk about your favorite movie {05} what is your favorite season, and why? {06} talk about your favorite food, and see if you can find a recipe in your target language… if not, try to make one! {07} describe what is in your bedroom/any room really {08} talk about your job or major in school, or dream job {09} describe your morning or night routine {10} pick a color and list as many things as you can that are/have that color {11} what are your biggest pet peeves {12} describe your dream house {13} can you create a grocery list in your target language? use foods you actually eat {14} describe a dream you had recently or that you remember vividly {15} describe your perfect vacation {16} pick a country you know nothing about, do a little research on it, then do a short segment on it {17} what would you do with one million dollars? {18} come up with a joke {19} try to rhyme! {20} what superpower would you want, why, and what would you do with it? {21} what is your favorite time of day? {22} if you could create your own country, what are some traditions you would have? {23} describe your biggest fear {24} what would you do if time froze and you were the only one not affected? {25} make a vocabulary list relating to something you love (pet, job, hobby, etc.) {26} would you rather travel to the future or past? why? {27} invent a monster and describe it {28} design a gadget or technology you think would be useful {29} if you were a king or president of your current country, you would… {30} write a short story about literally anything.
