Warning, I’m always super-shitty about the way I phrase things, so this is probably not going to come out right. I realize I have a lot of followers who fall on different ends of the spectrum when it comes to PLL and I always feel like there’s an intricate balance in writing out my feelings on the show and ships, because I like to try and respect all views. Yes, I am an Emison shipper, but I want anyone who is not to realize that I’m coming at this particular post from the perspective of Marlene/PLL/Marketing as a whole).

I’m staying away from social media and articles about the new show specifically because there is a lot of back and forth going on.

As far as Emison, the long and short of it is…I don’t agree with Marlene using Emison as a way to generate buzz about the new show. All the articles say the same thing, “We want you to understand their journey/We hope fans will understand their journey”. There’s no journey, dude. They’re over, especially if the show gets picked up. Shay’s not interested. Marlene knew that going into the spin-off.

She’s trying to get a huge chunk of people to watch to see what happens to a ship (which I get from a marketing standpoint, and I also understand that Emison is something that they are constantly bombarded with by interviewers and fans…but Marlene made that bed herself when she put them together knowing she was going to tear them apart). It’s kind of crappy the way the marketing team has handled it. I really wish Marlene and Sasha would get on the same page about Emison, because Marlene is being ominous and Sasha is being cautiously optimistic and continuing to give the Emison fanbase hope. But I think she’s naturally just an optimistic person. (Note, Sasha is pure and I will fight anyone who says anything mean about her).

Normally, I don’t get salty about this kind of thing, but it does not sit right with me that Marlene (self-admittedly) knew about the spin-off in season 6 before the rape baby storyline. She wrote all that egg-stealing/insemination shit knowing that Shay wasn’t interested in coming back (it’s pretty clear she’s been the most ready to move on from PLL, and I don’t fault her for that. She should get to live her best life). From Marlene’s standpoint though, it was really pointless to put two characters together when she knew they were going to split in a spin-off. And I don’t buy into the “it’s a challenge to write around this…” thing solely because she knew who was interested and who wasn’t early on and she chose to go the more difficult route.

Mostly I’m disappointed in the way it’s been discussed in the media (though I think most people could see the writing on the wall). She has no intention of keeping them together. She should have been straight with the fanbase about that from the start. But she will string people along to keep up those views. I really wish she hadn’t created off-screen drama that has no chance of resolution solely to keep a certain audience by talking about “journeys”. And I am not ignorant to the fact that couples split, but the problem I have is that she never should have put them together if she knew it was going to end like this anyway. That’s just poor planning.

But here’s the thing, my Emison peoples, I’m not going to bash her. It’s her show. They’re her characters.

And listen…I don’t hate Marlene. I know this post seems harsh, but I don’t hate her. I get marketing. I get a lot of what she’s doing. She gets a lot of shit, and I get why people get angry over it (not just Emison shippers. I know/have seen plenty of fans who have called out some of her writing choices, and some of her other choices in general).

But the thing is…she’s still a person. While I don’t agree with some of her creative liberties, I think on a personal side she’s probably a very lovely person. Attesting to this, after my mother died last year I posted something about us watching PLL together and Marlene reached out. She didn’t have to, but she did. Just remember that while you can dislike an artist’s work, don’t define that person by what you see in their artwork. We only see what they want to show in the media.

I’m of the mindset of live and let live. You want to support the show? Support it. If you don’t then go read The Perfectionists books instead (I plan to read them, especially given I loved Sara’s “The Lying Game” series). Or, you could always get lost in fanfic. There are more ways to enjoy the PLL/Sara Shepard universe than just the show. Let the people who want to enjoy the new show enjoy it.

As far as me, as much as I want to support Sasha and Janel and as much as I love Sydney, Sofia, and Eli…I don’t know if I really care enough to continue watching. There wasn’t one distinct thing that made me want to “click next episode” in the pilot.
