kai is very unlikely to express his emotions very regularly, preferring to keep them to himself

a/n: help me i feel like i'm the worst at writing dialogue... but anyways here's a little fic that suddenly popped into my head out of nowhere, idk how i feel about the ending though >:D

"i'm not upset." you insisted, as kai kept on assuming you were. well, he was kind of right. you were kind of upset. you were mostly jealous though.

you both were walking back to your apartment complex after getting some boba from down the street. you had initially told kai to go to the shop first instead of coming upstairs because you wanted to take a walk with him afterwards and now, you regret telling him to go. or maybe you were just being a jealous girlfriend.

but to be fair, the worker was flirting with kai right in front of you, and you were sure she was doing it since the moment he walked in. she even had the audacity to put a little heart next to his name. while you were watching the entire exchange, all you could do was look between her and kai and laugh under your breath because no way.

you knew your boyfriend was good looking, so of course people would try to flirt with him, but this was the first time someone continued to do it even when you arrived and kai put his hand on your waist.

kai of course, found the situation funny which just made you even more annoyed. you walked ahead of him into the lobby of your apartment, making a beeline for the elevators.

"y/n," kai started, catching up to you with the boba in his hand. when he sees the pout on your face he can't help but laugh. "i've never seen you that upset before."

"i told you i'm not upset!" you fire back, your voice rising and kai raises an eyebrow. you shake your head and turn away from him, heading into the elevator silently. the ride to your floor is silent, but you can feel kai looking at you and assessing the situation. once the doors open at your floor you basically stomp to your door, a little embarrassed at your little outbreak.

"wait... is it because of that worker?" kai asks as he steps through your front door behind you, locking it. you turn to face him. "she was literally doing the most kai. in front of me? and drawing that stupid heart on your drink? hello??" you scoff, crossing your hands over your chest.

"no way..." kai starts, placing the boba on the ground. "you're actually jealous."

"and you think this is funny." you start to turn away from him but he grabs your wrist to stop you. as soon as you face him again he grabs your face in his hands to make you look in his eyes.

"y/n, hey. it's not that i think it's funny. it's just that I've never seen you like this before, and to be honest i didn't really know how to act in that situation." he tilts his head closer to you, your noses almost touching. "but i want you to know that i only have eyes for you, no one else matters to me. and if stuff like that ever bothers you again i want you to tell me, ok?"

you sigh. "ok, but it's not your fault. i may have overreacted.... so i'm sorry about that." you try to avoid eye-contact so he lets go of your face and pushes your shoulders slightly until you feel your back come into contact with the wall. he places his hands on either side of your head, successfully trapping you between him and the wall.

"i had no idea you were the jealous type." he smirks when you look up at him with wide eyes. "it's kinda hot."

you immediately blush at his words and try to cover your face. "no, it's actually really embarrassing... i didn't think i was either."

he laughs softly before you feel him lean his head into your neck, gasping when he presses his lips against your jaw. “don’t be,” he mumbles against your skin. “i love you all the same.”

he uses one hand to lift your chin to look into your eyes before he kisses you slowly. your lips move against his eagerly as your arms wrap around his neck. his hands fall to your waist, hold tightening as he presses himself closer to you, sandwiching you between him and the wall.

the kiss grows more desperate as your tongues slide over each other messily, and you pull on the ends of his hair. you both pull away breathless as kai rests his forehead against yours, his hold on you unwavering.

"what can i do," he starts, still trying to catch his breath. "what can i do to to show you that you are the only one for me?"

you pull back to look at him, your thoughts running wild. "i can think of a few things..."

he takes the hint immediately and detaches from you a little to position his hands lower on your waist and you know to jump and he catches you as you wrap your legs around his waist.

"as you wish my love." he says into your ear and you giggle as he carries you to your room, leaving the boba you had bought abandoned on the floor.

“I really don’t think I’ll be any good at this,” you stuttered, shifting your weight from one foot to another.

Sunoo noted your worries and stepped towards you, taking your hands in his. “We don’t even have to film it. We’re just having fun, learning a silly dance,” Sunoo insisted. He brought your hands to his lips and pressed a gentle kiss atop your knuckles. “Promise.”

You smiled shyly and nodded. “Okay. Just don’t make fun of me.”

“Have I ever?” Sunoo smiled, dropping your hands. He reached for his phone, saying,  “This one is new to me too, but I’m seeing it everywhere.” Sure enough, as soon as TikTok opened, the dance he intended to learn played on the screen. It was short, and Sunoo knew it was within both of your skill sets.

“This doesn’t look that bad,” you finally said, watching as the fifteen-second clip replayed once again.

Sunoo nodded. “I think we could figure it out pretty quickly!” He was optimistic, despite the frown that quickly appeared on your face.

“I think you could figure it out,” you laughed, avoiding his gaze.

“If you don’t catch on as quickly, I’ll help you,” he insisted.

The two of you watched the video over and over, eventually finding yourselves to be more confident with the movements and rhythm of the song. Sunoo spent more time watching you than he did the video; however, his lack of attention made it look like the both of you took about the same amount of time to learn it.

“Dunno if I can do it without the video,” you mumbled eventually. “The moves feel natural now, I think, but memorizing? That’s a whole different skill.”

“We have all the time in the world,” he insisted.

“But I know you wanted to film it….”

“And I said we didn’t have to,” Sunoo assured you. He wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into a gentle hug. “I’m having fun just goofing off with you. Promise.”

“Okay, okay. I’m having fun, too,” you said, returning his embrace.

“Wanna try again?” he asked, smile only growing as you nodded your head.

You slid out of his arms, turning your attention back to his phone screen. “Let’s go.”

Kai decided to go on a city/shopping date.

Before leaving the house Soobin and Yeonjun was giving him tips on what he should and what he shouldn’t do.

Wore one of his best outfits.

Was in the mirror like this “🧍🏻” checking himself out.

Once you both meet up with each other he is very awkward.

Wonders if he should hold your hand or would that be too early.

Warms up after ten minutes because he see’s how excited you are.

You hold his hand dragging him into this store and the way he blushes at the physical contact is insane.

Helps you pick out your clothing while also picking out clothes for himself.

Fights over who should pay.

Once you both exit the store it’s kinda chilly and you don’t have a jacket.

Luckily Kai has one and offers it in a heartbeat.

Smiles when you intertwine your fingers together.

Once 8:00 pm rolls around you both decide to eat at a restaurant due to being tired from walking.

Orders what you order.

Makes many jokes at the table to where the point y’all are in tears,

and others are looking like “🧍🏽‍♀️👀”.

Tries to fight with you for the check.

You gotta snatch it out his hand because he is spending a fortune on both of y’all.

Offers to accompany you home.

“ahh that was so close!!!” kai groans as he leans his head against the glass of the pink claw machine in defeat.

beside him, all you can do is purse your lips as you try your best not to scream in frustration.

you and kai had been walking around after your little lunch date and happened to come across a claw machine sitting on the edge of the street, just outside a cute stationary shop. of course, with kai being a plushie enthusiast he immediately dragged you to it and you didn't protest.

you were both excited and perhaps a little too confident, because you were now on your twelfth attempt, lost a little over twenty dollars and won zero plushies.

"we were actually really close this time y/n!" kai says pointing at the little molang plushies stacked up near the drop box of the machine. "we will win this time i can feel it."

"this stupid thing took our money! it's 100% rigged kai, i'm done with this." you grip the side of the machine and start to shake it.

kai laughs and stops you from breaking the machine by placing his hands on your shoulders. he leans his head down so that he's at eye level with you. "y/n. we will win this time. we will. do you trust me?"

you give him a wry look. "no, not really."

he pouts and shakes your shoulders a little. "be a little more supportive please, my love."

you sigh and place your hands on his shoulders as well so it looks as if you both are in a little huddle. "ok. we got this. you got this. i believe in you. that molang is yours."

he grins, satisfied. "that molang is mine!"

you both stand and he holds his hand out to you and hesitantly, you place the token in his hand. he breathes out and stretches his fingers before he places the coin in the slot.

"wait," he says, his hand millimetres from the start button.

you give him a bewildered look. "what?"

he bends down a little and then taps his cheek. "gimme a kiss for good luck."

you roll your eyes but there's an amused smile on your face as you grab his arm to pull him closer to you before pressing a kiss to his cheek.

his lopsided grin reappears for a moment before his nose scrunches in concentration as he presses start.

you're both holding your breath as kai positions the claw, changing his mind at the last minute.

"now!" you commanded.

kai obliged, and both of you held your breath as the claw seemed to come down in slow motion. it fell and captured one of the molang's but both of you knew better than to celebrate.

unlike the last few times, the claw seemed to actually hold onto the plush. "oh my god oh my god," you say, gripping onto his wrist.

the claw snapped up−and the molang went flying... straight into the drop box.

you and kai immediately look at each other in shock before you're both jumping up and down screaming.

"you did it!!!!" you yell.

"i did it!!!" kai yells back.

you both finally calm down a little, still buzzing as kai finally fetches the plushie and holds it out to you. "for you."

"what?" you ask in confusion. "kai no way, it's yours. molang is your favourite."

he shakes his head. "i won it for you. a little something to hug whenever you're missing me."

and you swear in that moment your heart never felt so warm, so loved that all you can do is wrap him in the biggest hug because he was with, you right now. and you wished he would be with you forever.

soon enough, your hands leave each other's face in favour of wrapping your arms around each other's body, whilst you both smile and giggle into the kisses.

You met Huening Kai when you were twelve, right smack in the middle of junior high. You had these thick framed glasses and he could hardly see through his fringe of dark hair. You both looked like absolute dorks, but bonded over a shared love for playing the Nintendo DS.

Rather than eating lunch in the cafeteria, you would sit in your classroom, munching on whatever snacks your mother packed for you that day while trying to beat a level of MarioKart. One day, Kai decided to do the same thing. He sat a few desks away, not having talked to you before then.

He was a very friendly person, you knew this much. He was extremely outgoing and made friends with almost anyone he came into contact with. But you could tell he understood boundaries, since he didn’t try to force you into a conversation. However, you could feel his eyes switch back and forth between his own Nintendo and yours, as if he wanted to say something.

You took a sip of your juice and sighed, turning your body in your chair to face him. “If you wanna come sit with me, you can. I don’t mind.”

His eyes widened just a bit, shocked by your invitation, but you could see how happy it made him. He gave you a small smile, picking up his belongings and relocating to your desk, sitting backwards in the chair in front of you. “What other games do you have?”

And that was the start of something new.

You made it a habit to eat lunch together in the classroom every day, bringing along a different game each time. So from then on, your friendship blossomed immensely. Middle school was a bit rough, but you made it through with one more friend.

By the time high school rolled around, things hadn’t changed that drastically. The only addition was the release of the Nintendo Switch, which easily replaced your old DSIs due to both popularity and the fact that they looked super fucking cool. (You spent an unhealthy amount of money to get the pink one.)

Animal Crossing quickly became your favorite game to play together, visiting each other’s islands almost every single day. When the AC version of the Switch came out, Kai pawned off his original to his younger sister Bahiyyih in favor of begging his parents to get him the other one. (The boy was spoiled, so everything panned out in his favor.)

Even though you could both be considered massive losers for being obsessed with Nintendo still at age fifteen, you honestly weren’t. Kai’s friendship magic (you’d referred to it as his ‘My Little Pony’ power on numerous occasions and received just as many smacks on the back of the head in response) worked on just about everyone. Boys didn’t cringe inwardly at the sight of you. Since you’d ditched the glasses, in fact, they all seemed to be heavily attracted to you.

Except nothing ever happened.

Just when you thought it was going well with a boy, he suddenly backed off and left you heartbroken. It was upsetting, to say the least.

One night, when you and Kai were hanging out at your house, you ripped out a sheet of paper from a random journal and set it between the two of you. He raised an eyebrow at your actions, thoroughly confused by the weirdness of it.

“What are you doing?” He reaches over onto your nightstand to grab a handful of popcorn, shoving it into his mouth. You take a deep breath.

“I’m about to propose an idea— a very stupid, kind of idiotic idea— but an idea, nonetheless.” You answer, hopping off your bed to grab two colored pens. One black and one pink. He stares at you like you’d just grown two heads, the gears in his head constantly getting stuck.

“Okay, I’m caving. Can you tell me what this is all about?” He leans back onto his hands.

“A marriage pact.” Is what you say simply. His eyes nearly pop out of their sockets and he coughs as if he choked, sitting upright immediately.

“A what pact??”

“It’s a joke mostly, but deep down I’m actually kinda serious about it, so just hear me out,” you reason, raising your hands in surrender. “You and I have shit luck in the relationship department. And yeah I get it, we’re only fifteen so it’s not the end of the world, but part of me feels like I’ll have shit luck forever. So I’m suggesting a marriage pact.”

He blinks at you. Once. Then twice. Then a third time before he’s actually speaking again. “What exactly is a marriage pact?”

“Well there are rules and kinks to be figured out, but the gist of it is me and you will get together and get married by a certain age if we’re both still single,” you explain. “I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it in a movie or a K-drama somewhere.”

“Okay first of all, I do not have shit luck in the relationship department, I’m just not looking for anything right now. And second of all, you’re seriously planning our future based on fiction?”

“Kai Kamal Huening, you own an Isabelle plush because you somehow think her spirit will overtake you and you’ll learn how to speak like an Animal Crossing character. Do not talk to me about basing things off of fiction.” You deadpan, crossing your arms.

He avoids your glare, scratching the back of his neck. “We said we wouldn’t talk about that anymore. You also promised not to use my government name in an argument.”

“I won't do it again if you agree to the pact,” you grin, poking his cheeks playfully. “Please, Hyuka. I don’t wanna die an old lady with thirty cats and a house filled with random stuff I don’t need to the point that I can hardly walk through it. Cause it’s not like I’m going to miraculously bump into Jeonghan from Seventeen on the streets and have him fall in love with me.”

He takes one look at the hope in your eyes and lets out a small sigh, giving into the slight pout on your lips. “Fine. Okay. I’ll do it.”

Your expression brightens by a tenfold and you nearly topple him over, throwing your arms around his shoulders. “Yah! I love you, you overgrown baby!” You press a fat smooch on his cheek and pull away, settling yourself back down to get to business. When you’re not paying attention, he holds two fingers up to the area you just kissed, his face warming up at the action. “Alright, let’s establish our rules.”

He forces himself to snap out of it, nodding at your words. “Uh— okay— um— what age should we cap it at?”

You tap the end of your pen on your chin, humming. “How about twenty five? Not too young, not too old. People usually get married around that age.”

“That’s cool with me. Twenty five’s good.” He concedes. You’re slightly surprised that he’s not trying to fight with you on anything. Usually he would’ve tossed in his two cents. You don’t mention it though, taking your win and moving on.

“I don’t really want too many restrictions since we’ll both find loopholes anyways,” you say as you finish writing out the previous rule. “Next; we need to keep this between us only. No blabbering to anyone else. Yes, that means you can’t tell the guys.”

He opens his mouth and shuts it just as fast. “I guess that’s fair. This is like some Fight Club shit.”

“Please never refer to our pact in the same sentence as Fight Club again.”

“Okay okay, I won’t. Even though there’s nothing wrong with Fight Club,” Kai grumbles. “So, if we’re single by twenty five and no snitching. Is that all?” He gets more popcorn, extending his arm over you to also get his switch from beside the bowl on your bedside table. “Beomgyu’s letting me visit his island.”

“One more thing,” you hold up a finger, jotting down the remainder of the second rule, putting emphasis on certain parts. “You can’t flake out on me, Huening Kai. I mean it. Once this pact is signed, it’ll be sealed and delivered. There’s no going back.”

Your tone is firm, indicating just how committed you were with this. He wanted to tease you like he usually would when you tried being serious for once, but he didn’t have it in him. Not when he could tell how genuine you felt about this stupid pact. And because he doesn’t want to break your heart, he agrees.

“No take backs.” He smiles.

You grin widely, scribbling out the final rule of your contract before signing it. You slide the sheet of paper to Kai, watching him excitedly while he uncaps the pen and prepares to leave his own signature. His head tilts to the side, showing his hesitation to follow through. Then he glances up at you and catches that hopeful glint in your eyes once again.

(His fingers have a mind of their own after that.)

You put your hand out for him and he grasps it, shaking. “No take backs.”

heeseung sighed. “what if they don’t love me anymore?” you used to call him nightly — if you weren’t already spending the evening together. now? heeseung would be lucky to hear from you once a week.

jake let out a soft chuckle. “if they didn’t love you, you wouldn’t even be thinking about them.”

heeseung could only nod at his friend’s reminder. if you didn’t love him, he would have forgotten about you already. “right. thanks, jake.”

angst drabble, very loosely based off of conan gray's song heather

i wrote this in 20 mins i think its obvious im working on reqs but just wanted to post smth

sometimes you wonder, what was it that made you fall in love with hueningkai?

perhaps it was his fond appreciation for his plushie collection, how he adored every single one of those stuffed toys and cherished them. perhaps his contagious laugh was the real spark of the millions of butterflies that flittered in your stomach, begging to be released and to be free into the world. perhaps the way he simply smiled at you when you greeted him in the hallways, at the train station, anywhere, was enough to make you fall head over heels.

but just as luck had it, you had noticed the warmth in your heart too late.

maybe if you had confessed sooner, if you didn't ignore his confession, or even if you had hung out one too many times, something could have ignited.

now, as you scroll through his instagram feed filled with his new infatuation with his significant other, you can't help but feel a heavy heart.

they're perfect in every way together. they were not only beautiful, compassionate and caring, but they fit with hueningkai's sweet and sunshine personality. they were a match made in heaven.

if you could turn back time, you would return to the day when hueningkai confessed to you. it was months, maybe almost a year ago, but you decided against rejecting nor accepting his confession, leaving him practically in the dust.

you recall the enthusiasm behind his constant reassurance of "it's okay y/n! i'll be waiting for your answer, don't rush," and how it slowly dimmed over the next few months until he rarely mentioned it at all, his friendship with you cracking in its foundations.

if you only didn't take that time for granted, you could have been the one he was flooding his feed with. you could have given him the affection you always wanted to give and receive the affection you wanted to receive. the memories you had with hueningkai were no longer filled with the cheerful experiences and bubbly personality you once remember.

you only remember hueningkai as the one who got away.
