My monthly reminder to Tumblr that Black people exist all over the world. This implication that whenever a Black person's experience is brought up it "must be US centric" is ridiculous and low-key a dogwhistle atp. Black people are global. Antiblackness is global. I assure you that even if the Black people in your country don't deal with race the same exact way they do in the US, does not mean there aren't similarities in experience. Perhaps look for them in your spaces and LISTEN.

just saw a review of mary shelley’s frankenstein that complained it was predictable. maybe i’m being annoying, but i don’t think that’s a valid critique for a piece of classic literature.
it’s predictable because it created an entire new genre and any “formulaic” aspects is because shelley created the formula. it is baked in to your favorite media. your ability to “predict” is because it’s culturally significant, not because it’s poorly written

I've noticed that people who consider themselves progressive have become more invested in essentially fake-claiming any autistic people they don't like. Progressive circles that want to seem like allies to Autistic people may agree that mocking an autistic person for, say, missing a social cue, is ableist. But if you claim that person isn't really autistic then not only can you continue to mock them, you're a good ally by doing so.
I dont think it's a coincidence that this is happening at the same time jokes originally made by and for autistic people are becoming more widespread outside of autistic circles.
If you can dilute the common understanding of autism to 'that tism rizz', you can more easily ostracize autistic people for showing symptoms of autism, especially symptoms that are less socially acceptable or 'cute'.
It's the exact same social isolation we've been facing forever, but this time, it's wearing a progressive hat, so we have to pretend it's an improvement.

Ah, it's that wonderful time of year when my NextDoor is filled with people taking pictures of tiny snakes (garters and rat snake babies and rough ground snakes and all kinds of little guys) and panicking about whether they are "poisonous" (you mean venemous. I promise)
So, uh, please learn what venemous snakes in your area look like.
FYI, Texas only has 4. (OK, we actually have a few varieties of rattlesnake, but I'm grouping them together since you can identify them all as a rattlesnake the same way.)
Tumblr media
Of the 4, only cottonmouths (bottom left) are really difficult to ID at a distance since they look a lot like other water snakes.
Some fun facts to also remember-
1. The majority of snake bites happen while the person is intoxicated.
2. The majority of bites happen on the hand or lower arm.
Can you guess what the easiest way to avoid getting bitten is?
If you are someone who regularly works in heavily wooded areas or dense brush, you can take precautions with snake proof gloves, but for the rest of us, basic situational awareness and a willingness to just leave a snake alone is going to prevent 99% of your problems.
Snakes do not want to bite you. You are not food. And that venom is expensive. A snake knows that in a fight, the big angry mammal will *always* win. Sure, an untreated snake bite might kill you tomorrow. But that won't stop you from stomping the snake to death with your boots today if you tried. You are big. They are scared.
Thank you!

When people get a little too gung-ho about-
wait. cancel post. gung-ho cannot be English. where did that phrase come from? China?
ok, yes. gōnghé, which is…an abbreviation for “industrial cooperative”? Like it was just a term for a worker-run organization? A specific U.S. marine stationed in China interpreted it as a motivational slogan about teamwork, and as a commander he got his whole battalion using it, and other U.S. marines found those guys so exhausting that it migrated into English slang with the meaning “overly enthusiastic”.
That’s…wild. What was I talking about?

I rly hate the Satanic Panic & the moral panic surrounding violence in video games in the 90s, coz it's now impossible to talk about the social implications of violent video games in a realistic sense.
No, violence in video games does not create serial killers in the way most people imagine it would.
However, it's very important to notice how after 9/11, a lot of violent video games pivoted their content from silly gratuitous cartoon gore to more realistic military shooters set in the Levant from a US American lens. It's also important to notice the connection of these games & their toxic online multi-player voice chats to Gamer Gate in 2014.
It's obviously not as black & white as it was presented in the 80s & 90s, I dont think everyone who played early Call of Duty games is a white supremacist who wants to join the military to kill people in the middle east, but I think it's dangerous to pretend like video games or any media can't have an impact on the way people think about violence.
I think what makes all the difference here is how that violence is portrayed, what the message behind it is, what the motives are behind the people who crafted that message, who the victims of that violence are, how they are portrayed & the greater cultural context that surrounds it.

I’m going to scream. Pushback on the narrative that climate breakdown can be averted by individual decisions centres around the fact that NORMAL PEOPLE do not contribute to a significant amount of carbon emissions cos the average NORMAL PERSON emits 7 tons of CO2 a year. Not Taylor fucking Swift who has emitted over 8000 tons of emissions this year SO FAR. Her CO2 emissions from private jet use alone are equivalent to that of TWO THOUSAND normal people. We absolutely should be blaming individuals if those particular individuals are emitting two thousand people’s worth of emissions.
