I’m watching the Paranormal Activity movies for the first time and I kind of mean this as a joke and I also really emphatically don’t. The real villain in these movies is toxic masculinity.

And also. Y’know. The demon. The real actual demon is also the villain but it’s mostly toxic masculinity. And this isn’t a new take, I’ve never watched the movies before and through the zeitgeist I knew that people were calling the men in these movies idiots, but especially watching the first movie for the first time it’s really driven home how many of the issues in this movie are caused by Micah’s toxic machismo and his inability to value Katie’s desires.

I think teens need to be able to go to trusted adults and say “I saw something in a porn video that freaked me out and now I’m worried I’ll have to do it too” and then the adult can say “it’s ok to be nervous about sex, but remember that you don’t have to do ANYTHING you don’t want to do, ever, no exceptions” and this should be an ongoing conversation to remind young people that sexual desire isn’t monolithic and they are not uniquely weird, cowardly, or undesirable for expressing their feelings, and they deserve sexual partners who prioritize consent & autonomy always
