Does your muse think they are intrinsically a good person? Objectively, are they?

No, I think despite what he might say or try to have others believe, he knows that he's been selfish and unkind. It outweighs any kindness he has shown to others. Stealing from others is wrong to him not because it's illegal, but it's an immoral thing to do in most situations. He doesn't agonize over the fact that he's probably the villain in someone's story. 

Even though Vace doesn't take responsibility for things turning out the way that they did, he does feel that there's something inherently broken about him. Something that makes him undeserving of love and kindness back. But that's okay. He can just Take things from people and pretend he's a big shot once he has some money. 

There is nothing objective about determining a person's goodness. From my point of view, he's got the makings of a good person, but he doesn't utilize it at the moment. He can be kind and merciful without expecting anything in return. If a family member died and left him an ungodly amount of money, he would no longer be a pirate. The most he'd inconvenience anyone is have parties too loudly or something, but hurting anyone or infringing on their autonomy doesn't interest him at all.

Mister Asteris, between that guileless smoulder and that unconvincingly aloof attitude, you may as well get a forehead tattoo that reads "I am up to no good." Oh, and don't think I haven't noticed you trying to smooth over Captain Tarunt.

No reason to stop his body language even if it had been pegged. He just swings his arms out with no more effort than a breeze as his face lightens. “Really? tragic hero arc.

we all know how this story goes. when it began, you were almost the perfect hero, but almost is never enough. you lacked introspection, or you were too stubborn or vengeful or reckless - as reckless as the world that helped to ruin you. you were not perfect, and that's okay. we knew the story ended in blood and we watched it anyway. we knew you would die in the end and we still couldn't help but love you, just a little bit. at the very least, you are more human than a hero could ever be.
