Artist Statement- Process and Enquiry
Evolution and Unpredictability
Angela H Pieraccini
I am an emerging contemporary artist specialising in abstract expressive acrylic paintings and my work has been constantly evolving this last year. I have been lucky to have my work included in Paisley Art Institutes 132nd exhibition and John Byrne Awards shortlist. I have developed a distinct means of visual communicating and expression through detailed exploration of a variety of practical based approaches and techniques. I continue to manipulate these works into 2D and 3D and I have been experimenting with new working methods, techniques and how to develop these works into art works you would see in a gallery space, I will be exploring this is more depth in the future.
My work is very expressive, and I feel more comfortable working on large scale projects as it allows me to action paint, and it allows me to vent this supressed expressiveness.
I see inspiration everywhere, and how I perceive these images has dramatically changed recently, l question everything I see, whether its nature, city lights, everyday objects which I guess makes me a true visual artist.

“Evolution” abstract acrylic painting 190x200cm. I wanted to create a large scale painting again, I haven't challenged myself on this scale for 6 months, since ( “corona Lockdown” this work was included in the PAI 132nd exhibition and got recognition by the John Byrne's awards.)
I am slightly disappointed in the painting and not sure its a finished piece, I was trying to explore and experiment with forms, shapes and composition and I feel something just doesn't work, I generally paint in a automatism style and I let the brush take the line to where is wants to go. Moving onto the creative project, I will try and start planning out my paintings, there's a style of painting I would like to create in my head and planning the composition and forms may help. I am a self taught painter, I've never had lessons on how to paint or mix paint.
I particular like work and style by Scottish artist Victoria Morton and Betty Franks Krause.
So back to the drawing board as such, I may cut up this painting and experiment with my new ideas of making them more contemporary and incorporating 3D sculptural works that I have covered in this brief and explore collage to create something completely different, or use sections of the painting to create smaller pieces.
Please Note- I also found it difficult to get good lighting on final large scale piece, due to lack of space in the studio.

3D experimental sculptural works- using polystyrene shapes sprayed painted then using wire i created height and geometric shapes and added strips of my abstract paintings to corporate into the final design. Enjoyed being playful with this and experimenting with these materials.

Process and Enquiry- Project Statement
Evolution and unpredictability
 Angela H Pieraccini
In starting this brief, I was researching and looking at David Lagans work “line let loose” and Tania Kovats “something against nothing” I also had a look at Caroline Achaintre, David Batchelor, Amano Yoshitaka, Mark Titchner and gained inspiration and new ideas which motivated me. I initially experimented with mark marking and drawings based along some of their ideas and there working methods. During this research period I stumbled upon outsider art and this aroused my curiosity and  I will be looking at this again and exploring this further.
I have also done online lecturers through SSA and Eventbrite to help me with my research and development. I have covered both intrinsic and extrinsic value throughout this trimester, I recently sold my first painting and I try to maintain my online image through social media as an artist and I love making, experimenting for myself and exploring my techniques and skills and building on these, the workshops have really helped me explore this and challenge my thinking. I have experimented with 3D and 2D and will be moving this forward to reach my outcome of the brief.
I will be creating 3D sculptural pieces incorporating my abstract paintings and white card which has been inspired by David Batchelors 3D works, there bright, vibrant colours, playful and very eye catching with his use of fantastic colours and I’ll be playful with the skills learned through the paper vessel workshop and try and develop these further , I will also be using clay to create 3D sculpture and again working away on my paintings and finding ways to incorporate these into 3D final pieces, my work is certainly evolving and there’s still a degree of unpredictability within it.

Further development of the paper vessels, this was placed on the floor rather than a wall feature, which allowed me to install the rolls of paper but again these could be secured on a wall to create the same effects.

Experimenting with 3D paper vessels and incorporating my abstract painting using these bright colour, vibrant, eye catching colours inspired by David Batchelor, was being playful and paying careful consideration to composition , texture and lighting to create shadows.
I feel this worked well and would like to explore this further with a larger scale piece, this was 100x100cm approx., it would be good to see this size doubled and I may progress this and develop it further moving onto the creative project brief.
This could even be developed even further to become a full installation piece, rather tan a wall piece, given the right space , resources and materials.

Acrylic Paintings looking at colour inspired by David Batchelor
“ this epiphany lead Batchelor to investigate the presence of “Chromophobia “through western cultural thought, he suggests colour has often been cast as a dangerous element-as the oriental, the feminine, the infantile, the vulgar, and the cosmetic.

“Aching Heart “
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Final piece and development of my painting inspired by David Batchelor and his vibrant colour schemes- acrylic on canvas 78cmx90cm
This painting is called “Aching Heart” during the process of painting this unfortunately I lost one of my dogs and had to make the hard decision of putting him to peace, there was no other option, my heart is still breaking , as I miss him loads and a week later I broke my fibula bone in my ankle, so I experienced  pain physically and emotionally, it was a very difficult period but I remained strong and i was happy and found some peace when I finally finished this painting, adeptly named aching heart.
I feel art is an effective means of communicating the experience of pain. Suffering is part of the human experience.

Canotype workshop- slightly disappointed in the results, as there a lack of natural sun light during the winter, maybe best done during the summer months.
The first image was left 1 day, the 2nd 3-4 days and the final image 5-6 days , they were left at my window all this time. The canvas has a faint image and maybe should have been left longer than the 5-6 days. its was fun experimenting with this technique.
