Creating a body of artwork under the briefs of Index and Evolution aims to provoke consideration of everyday materials and disposible items, regarding consumption of waste and the detremental impacts they have on the environment signifies that we are all contributing to the mass destruction of ecological systems. By making a small change in our daily lives through recycling we have the ability to aid the planet in all aspects ranging from pollution (in all forms) to climate change. This project's intention is to focus on transforming found materials and common objects into aestetic and captivating art forms whilst continuing to uphold the indexical properties which lie within every scrap of rubbish. Through a wide exploration of media the body of work will take shape via 3D sculptural forms, 2D drawings fabricated from the sculptures and a range of workshops developing potential routes and options to explore this topic further.

Quick Reflection
Tumblr media
As far as this project goes I’ve learned a lot of new methods and ways to expand my range of artwork and it has really changed my thinking process as well in the long run. Allowing me to understand myself better as an artist in terms of what type I am, what I’m style of working i’m drawn to and what really inspires me through a range of workshops, exhibitions, collaborative work and research. Surprisingly, with this project it has made realize that my work seems to always gravitate towards environmental factors and effects caused by humans. I Personally feel that I should’ve focused in on one major factor and broke it down more rather than keeping the topic as open as I did - as I seem to get sidetracked down a route of options and ways to explore, however that’s a learning curve i’ll work on in the future.
I also encountered unforseen events throughout this project more than Visual language such as the breaking of my 3D sculpture (which I attached back together, however, as it was painted prior there are sections of it that are now left kinda messy in my opinion as it wasn’t attached directly back into the original places as it was pretty complex to see where everything went. I also had difficulty getting the sound workshop files to load up so instead I left them on a separate USB appropriate for viewing. And a major issue I had was some of my images were flagged and blocked which I had to appeal to allow them to get viewed again.
However, I’ll take everything as a learning curve and an opportunity to better myself in the future, and embrace the challenges and problem solving that is yet to occur in the long run.

Creating 2D works in representation of; Land,Water and Air pollution. I Wanted to incorporate the idea of revealing behind certain parts of the canvas- showing melted plastic.
Land Pollution - Natural fall/environment colours with the drawing of a damp guard sculpture shadows on it that has several parts cut out to reveal vibrant plastic behind it - representing the contrast between the nature and our waste . 2D outcome.  Spray paint, melted plastic and ink.
Water Pollution - a mini trial before the 2d outcome, I was actually really happy with this piece as I tried to incorporate the manipulating plastic idea to it and alter the canvas in a manner to show the flow of water/ocean, for this reason I primarily used ink to try and allow it to flow better and kept the plastic to water/blue and clear colours.
Air Pollution- A mini trial before the 2d outcome but I really wasn’t feeling this piece at all other than the galaxy like colour scheme, what set it off was the shapes that I carved out more than anything and just stuck on and over apart from the gaps, which didn’t really work in my opinion, however, as this wasn’t an aspect I liked about it, I knew not to take it further into my final outcome. Spray paint and plastic - as aerosols are harmful to air pollution

Flagging Statements- Writing poetic words and statements to represent environmental Degradation - this idea stemed from the Original pot noodle lids of “make time, save time ..be heroic” with got me thinking, why doesn’t every lid have some form of messaging to say to be better and more aware on handling our waste. -abundance of yogurt lids/ noodle lids courtesy of peers contribution.

Sound Workshop Douglas Morland - an interesting workshop where we were required to collab and go around the college building and note down certain sounds , parts of conversing and snipets that were being heard, afterwards we threw sentences together individually and chanted them in different pitches/frequencies. From there we were meant to further this by altering our recordings via audacity but the program was unable to run correctly for the formats that was being used, and Unfortunately I came across difficulty uploading these sound files, but overall from this outcome it allowed me the opportunity to explore sound more as a form of working which I will be taking further in my timepiece through development environment sounds.
Collab team ; Yvonne, Sinead, Charlie and Jacqueline.

Time piece Installation - looking at light and shadows on the wall. I think the mesh really enhances it as it breaks up the block shadows of this piece. (Multipurpose installation)

Rubbish Timepiece - Environment is at breaking point due to the pollution and waste and everything is becoming irreversibly damaged.
For the overall outcome of the timepiece I intend to combine all of the videos (perhaps some stills of the images and add over environmental sounds to show a better representation of the build up).

Nice compositions and close up of the images- I intentionally began focusing on darker lighting as i’m trying to portray the situation to worsen throughout the making of this piece.
