Ennackal Chandy George Sudarshan (also known as E.C.G. Sudarshan; 16 September 1931–14 May 2018; a natural death at 86) was an Indian-American theoretical physicist and a professor at the University of Texas, Austin for over 40 years; E.C.G.
Sudarshan was also the first to propose the existence of tachyons, particles that travel faster than light.
The abstract of the paper, Physics Today 22, 12, 47 (1969), https://doi.org/10.1063. /1.3035294, reads: “Anything that is not forbidden is compulsory,” says Murray Gell-Mann's half-facetious totalitarian principle. What then about faster-than-light particles called “tachyons”? In their May article Olexa-Myron Bilaniuk and E.C.G. Sudarshan argued that valid solutions of Albert Einstein's relativity equations describe such particles. Thus if Einstein's equations are accurate descriptions of the physical universe and if solutions not forbidden are compulsory, tachyons must exist.
It's said that Feinberg also, in 1967, proposed tachyonic particles that could be made from excitations of a quantum field with imaginary mass. However, it was soon realized that Feinberg's model did not in fact allow for superluminal (faster than light) speeds.
E.C.G. Sudarshan developed a fundamental formalism called dynamical maps to study the theory of open quantum system. He, in collaboration with Baidyanath Misra, also proposed the quantum Zeno effect. He is known for: Coherent states; Optical equivalence theorem; He has also been credited with numerous contributions to the field of theoretical physics, including Glauber–Sudarshan P representation, V-A theory, open quantum system and Lindblad equation, spin–statistics theorem, non-invariance groups, positive maps of density matrices, and quantum computation. His other contributions include east–west relations, and the philosophy and religion.
Institutions: University of Texas, Indian Institute of Science; Institute of Math..., Awards: 2010 ICTP Dirac Medal; 1976 Parma Bhushan; 2007 Padma Vibhushan; 2006 Majorana Prize; etc. He was nominated for the coveted Nobel Prize at least six times. Serious controversies arose in 2005 and 2007 when several physicists wrote to the Swedish Academy, protesting that Sudarshan should have been awarded a share of the Prize.
