Sam spending 5 minutes with Kevin and immediately going "girl you gotta get out and also maybe I am the bad guy here cuz he and I have things in common???" was truly one of the most alarming developments as to who Kevin is beyond the sitcom facade

There's a lot of things I liked about Kevin Can Fuck Himself, but most people have already said most of the things.
One thing that I haven't seen anyone comment on is how Kevin is physically abusive. It's not intentional or targeted, and more often than not some sort of accident, but he repeatedly causes physical harm to others, especially Allison. And he refuses to change. When he sees that his wife has a significant lump on her head due to his idiotic mistake, he doesn't feel any kind of remorse or guilt, he doesn't give any indication that he would like to amend his behavior to make sure he doesn't even accidentally hurt his wife. He just deflects, and acts like since it wasn't intentional, since he wasn't deliberately malicious, that he is absolved.
Kevin immediately moves onto the next thing, of course, because his wife's pain is merely a distraction from his idyllic sitcom bliss. Except that Allison has to have Patty help her take a look at her injury, and it is treated dead fucking seriously.
It is wild to see a show that depicts slapstick and strips it of all pretense and down to the fact that it is people hurting each other.

I hate when I watch something that absolutely claws me open from the inside out and when I mention it to someone else they say something sane like ā€œthat was pretty good.ā€ And I can’t put into words the extent to which it compelled me for reasons the person I am talking to will never understand. So I just have to reply with ā€œyeah, it was pretty good.ā€

I love how whatever allison and patty have going on is somehow gayer than the actual, canonical romantic relationship between tammy and patty

"Until 20 minutes ago, I didn't know I liked you."
"After 10 years? What changed your mind?"
"When you said you killed my mom."
Dare I say: ROMANCE.

neil is actually soooo fascinating to me i could put him in a jar with a stick and a leaf. like 1. you overhear your best friends wife plotting to murder him with your sister 2. you assault said wife 3. your sister almost kills you protecting said wife 4. once you recover from this you tell your ā€œbest friendā€ about the murder plot and not ONLY does he not believe you but he laughs at your haircut and doesn’t ask you ANYTHING about why you were gone/what happened to your hair/the HUGE SCAR ON YOUR HEAD which conveniently does not exist in Sitcom World bc that would require kevin to think about anyone else for two seconds
AND YOU STILL HANG OUT WITH THIS GUY. like wow talk about cycles of abuse. neil treats the people around him terribly, can’t be with diane in front of other people, can’t be kind to patty or to allison, can’t sympathize with anyone but himself, puts himself at the mercy of kevin to keep himself in good graces with an abuser, completely ignores what are very clear signs that diane’s husband is abusive.
but!!!! he recognizes his father in himself. he eventually kicks kevin to the curb. he accepts (eventually) that patty has kicked him out.
i love the ambiguity of neil’s ending. he COULD figure it out! there’s hope for neil! yeah he fuckin sucks but there are glimmers of decency in him and there’s the acceptance of who he really is that kevin lacked. he COULD quit drinking, maybe get some therapy. self help idk whatever works for him. maybe once he stops drinking he takes skating more seriously, finds other hobbies that get him around kinder people.
OR he could get sucked into the orbit of another charismatic abuser. WHO KNOWS!
all we the viewer know is that it’s NO WOMANS JOB TO FIX NEIL. neil has to fix neil!
