Shit man, this mech war is fucked. I just saw a doll shoulder its rifle and say "reality warp: black hole star" or some similar shit, and every mech around it cratered, radiated a ring of pure energy, and disappeared. The camera didn't even go onto it, that's how common shit like this is. My ass is firing anti-personnel rounds and buckshot. I think I just heard "nanomachines: skewer" two groups over. I gotta get the fuck outta here.

Something to be aware of while making a game: Sometimes the game is so fun you forget to work on the game and social media because you prepare game sessions and play too much....

Project:Ascension Character Sheet
Tumblr media
Since D&D is such a large name in the TTRPG space (and, to be honest, what made us make our own system in the first place) I'll explain a few things about our character sheet here using D&D references. Augments are your "Levels". Threat Level is calculated based on your characters stats. Toughness is "Armor Class" where you need to roll higher to "hit". The other defenses are "Active Defenses" that each have a unique way to mitigate damage. "Combat Maneuvers" is where you can summarize your attacks/Abilities for ease of reference. Frame Durability is basically your bones. But if a bone breaks, you lose that limb and everything in it.

Character creation
Our game's mechanics work at their best when you've got an existing concept first. Our rules are adaptable to fit with just about any character idea. Balancing even the most powerful abilities with appropriate costs and conditions. ALL for the purpose of fulfilling fantasy without ruining everyone else's experience.

How we Play
The way we've been running games of Project:Ascension is in a connected series of one-shot "Missions" wherein the characters gain resources to improve and upgrade themselves that carry over to the next Mission. We've found this style to be accommodating to the common problem of divers schedules. Even when schedules STILL can't line-up properly, and some players miss out on missions, we have a small "Catch-Up" mechanic where your character can still make a little bit of money through an "Odd-Job" when they miss out on a mission. (though you might get hit by a car while doing an Odd-job)

was inspired by the Vykkers from Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. these creatures might have been human once, now they solely exist to support the Forces of Morak, by modifying them, repairing their weapons and building new weapons for them. their brains have been forcibly engorged with new matter to make them more intelligent, but its also made them slower and heavily dependent on machinery to assist them. it is believed that these creatures are the only ones who know Moraks true nature, unfortunately, speech is one of many abilities that Morak has robbed from them.

Decades ago, before the Cyber Age, research into cybernetics was at a dead end.
All attempts at integrating advanced cyber technology were met with failure. some key component was missing to make the process stable.
Then Mallium was discovered, a chemical that - used precisely - made the fusion of metal and flesh totally seamless, with no risk of the body rejecting the machinery.
Thus, the cyber age was propelled forward, and within a short few decades, most of humanity was augmented with cybernetics - for better and for worse.
Amid the many boons this age brought, a few concerned studies were silenced when they found evidence to suggest that Mallium had dangerous long-terms effects.
The corporations of today make so much money from cyberware, and any suggestion there might be risk was shut down. So Mallium continued to be produced and distributed worldwide, integrating technology into our skin, as well as playing a key component in other pharmeceuticals.
Until December 31st, 2099.
Marko Rodnik, 58, was attending a christmas event in Leeson Square, at the heart of Sonja City.
Rodnik had recieved many surgeries and cybernetics in his lifetime, due to various chronic illnesses. Most recently he had recieved an implant in his throat and oesophagus, a kind of internal life support machine, to compensate for breathing difficulties.
Halfway into the evening, Rodnik became suddenly very ill, and an ambulance was called. As emergency services arrived, Rodnik seemingly fell unconscious.
The following is taken from the account of a surving EMT, who witnessed the ensuing event :
"As we approached Rodnik - he was slumped over and sat beside his wife - he seemed to convulse slightly, choking and gagging.
It only lasted for a moment though. Then he woke up and turned to his wife. Mrs Rodnik hesitated for a moment, she looked confused or stunned.
Then she tried to scream.
But Mr Rodnik– Marko.. something came out of his mouth. Long, silver, dripping with a dark liquid. A red, pink mass hung from the end, spotted with white. His throat bulged, lips peeled back, like he was throwing up his innards.
She tried to scream, but the silver mass shot toward her neck.
There was so much blood.
Then Marko turned to us. His eyes were bright, and the silver mass rose slowly, like a snake preparing to strike. I ran. There were cries and shouts behind me, crowds fleeing, and a howling scream of something inhuman.'
This was the first documented instance of 'Malice', the consequence of exposure to high amounts of Mallium. Many such incidents followed. Now this threat lurks over humanity indefinitely.
Such widespread use of Mallium means that almost all humans are already contaminated with it. And so far, no cure or vaccine has been found.
We now live in a world where monsters roam the quarantined and abandoned cities, and neighbours watch eachother with suspicion, for fear that they might turn into a beast of flesh and steel.

How we Started
Project:Ascension started, conceptually, as a D&D campaign we wanted to DM together. However, about halfway through the planning process, we realized we'd have to homebrew over half the entire campaign. So we decided, let's just make our own game. We use an Action Point system for turns because we felt limited by the "Action, Movement, Bonus Action, Reaction" that D&D has. We felt that a lot of D&D's class options were cool- BUT if you wanted to mix and match, multi-classing was terrible. So we set up a classless system.
We felt that tracking ammunition and spell slots (and spell slots were annoying in general) was a bother, so we combined it into an Energy resource to track.
We feel it's very important that you can really fit your character's backstory and personality with the character's stats, and so we've done that.
