Projection Screens - Know this before you buy projector screen
Tumblr media
So, you are planning to buy a new projector to enhance your home theatre experience. Projectors are the two-piece system - Projection screen and Projector. You have to buy a separate screen where the high-quality images are projected.  It is a very important projection equipment.
Buying a projector of only half of the battle, as there are a lot of things to think of when buying a projection screen. Here, we have outlined some important factors to focus on before buying a projection screen.
Types of screens
There are several types of screen options such as - permanent screens, pull down screens, portable screens, etc. The permanent screen is usually referred to as ‘Fixed-Frame’ where the actual screen is placed within a metal or solid wooden frame.
Pull Down Screens are mounted on the wall semi-permanently and can be pulled down when in use - and pulled up when not in use.
Portable screens can be installed in different rooms and are less expensive compared to other projection screens. The only drawback is that you have to do the adjustment each and every time you change the location.
Material
Projection screens are usually made of materials that reflect as much as light as possible to produce a bright image. The type of screen material also determines the viewing angle characteristics and screen gain.
Some of the commonly used screen material include - Blackout Cloth, Matte White Coating, Vinyl Board Tarps. Spandex etc.
Blackout Cloth is used as a screen for long lasting, flat and stable image. The matte white coating has poor levels of reflection and hence, is suitable for rooms with dim lighting. Vinyl board tarps are recommended for large projection setups and are economically appropriate.
Size of screen
Size of the projection screen is very important as it can ‘Make’ or ‘Break’ the viewing experience. A portable projector screen can work pretty well for you. Modern projectors can create a bright image of up to 100-inches. We carry an assortment of projection screens from Elite, Da-Lite, Draper, and Mustang.
Ideally, projection screens of 100-120 inches diagonally fit into most of the rooms and give a real cinematic experience.
Your projection screen size also depends on the projector you choose. You need to look at the aspect ratio to determine the actual screen size.
Screen aspect ratio
Aspect ratio is nothing but the ratio of the width of the screen to its height. You will have to select an aspect ratio that matches the aspect ratio of your projector. Get the correct screen height ratio to get the right screen for your home theatre.
The common aspect ratios that help you choose a perfect projection screen are - 16: 9 and 4 : 3. HD projectors are ideally 16: 9 while multiple media projector are 4 : 3. To recreate movie theatre experience, you can for wall mounting screens that can adjust to fit the content and give cinematic aspect ratios of 2.35: 1.
Bottom Line
I hope you have got a basic understanding of things to consider while purchasing a projector screen. It is advisable to consult a reputed dealer who can help you evaluate the room environment and assemble a projection screen that will give you the best experience.
