I’m thinking about this again. I checked the wiki and the “newly edgy idols” title apparently comes from the English captions on the official video of the virtual singer version. But having just looked at the lyrics in those subs, they’re just bad overall (“undeletable dreams” and “goddess of unbeatable” are some lines that stood out to me). Mystery solved! It’s because the original video received a bad English translation of the lyrics in its captions, and people took that as gospel.

Why does アイドル新鋭隊 (Idol Shineitai) get translated to “newly edgy idols” so often? 新鋭 (shinei) means like “up and coming” or “young and energetic” and 隊 (tai) is group. So I would translate is as something more like up and coming idol group. The only explanation I can think of for the newly edgy idol translation is that someone just used the meanings of each kanji individually (新 new, 鋭 sharp/edge, 隊 group).

Nene wins a gaming tournament at the festival! They’re especially impressed with her accuracy in fps games.

Trans Mizuki backstory! Obviously they never explicitly confirm anything, but we her meeting Rui for the first time in a flashback:

During these flashback scenes, she has shorter hair, wears a uniform with a tie, and her voice seems lower. She also seems very unhappy and lonely :(. A few other bits and pieces of “evidence” are scattered throughout the event story, such as Mizuki turning down a class shirt because it would be hard to find a place to change with the school so crowded and busy.

I’ve translated the results for both the first song content and the second costume design contest!

First up, the song contest! The theme was “an exciting high energy song,” and the winner is Brand New Day by @irucaice! The song is expected to be added to the game February 2021.

Judge’s comments: I chose this song because it was energetic and high tempo from beginning to end, with a climax at the high point, a bright timbre and positive lyrics that made me think “I’ll do my best in the future!” that fit the theme of an exciting high energy song perfectly!

1st Project Sekai Next song contest entry

Since the theme was “an exciting high energy song...” this is a shiny happy hardcore Vocaloid song with maximum energy! It’s a super high spirited song sprinting to the future with a BPM of 185! I’ve always loved happy hardcore songs that suit rhythm games, so I’ll be happy if you support this song!

Now for the costume design contest. The theme for this one was phantom thieves.

Judge’s comments: The bat motif makes this a dark phantom thief design! Despite the feeling of oppression it gives off, the skin showing here and there makes it feel light, the parts and patterns show a detailed coolness, I want to see this phantom thief! These feelings are why I chose it.

Judge’s comments: With a stylish form using white and gold as the basic theme, and the particulars like the lining of the cape on the back, the total design is wonderful! I chose this because the noble gentlemanly look and the stylishness add up to a wonderful costume!

Tsukasa and Touya played together as kids because their parents knew each other, and Touya calls Tsukasa his benefactor. Tsukasa helped him be brave enough to make the decision to quit classical music and do what he actually wanted to do. Touya: “I wouldn’t be where I am now without Tsukasa-sempai’s words back then. He changed me...so he’s my benefactor.”

Because he respects Tsukasa so much, he loved the Romeo battle royale show, and thinks it has some deep meaning to it. Touya: “I could feel the philosophical implications in the seemingly comedic developments. There must have been some meaning in using that song for the background music in the last scene...as expected of Tsukasa-sempai.” It’s not that deep, buddy.

According to Mizuki, the show ends with the final Romeo going to space. She doesn’t say why this happens, or whether Juliet goes with him. ???

Judge comment: The whole costume is unified in pastel colors, and from the parka’s ice cream pattern to little details like the colored sprinkles and strawberry syrup, it’s covered in sweets themed cuteness, which made me choose it!

This post comes with two translations. One attempt to adapt the joke to English, and one that just explains the original joke.

English adaptation:

Nene: Ah, this CD, it looks like the OST for the game I played the other day.

Emu: OST...Oh no, Seven Tigers? Grrrrowl

Original joke explained:

Nene: Ah, this CD, it looks like the soundtrack for the game I played the other day.

Emu: Soundtrack...three tigers? Grrrrowl

The word Nene uses for soundtrack is a shortened version of the English word with a Japanese pronounciation, santora (from saundotorakku). Emu doesn’t seem to know the word, so she says three tigers (sanhiki no tora) because it sounds similar.

This joke obviously doesn’t work in English in its original form, so I tried to come up with a version that did!
