i have two things to say about btvs season 3 episode 1:
seeing buffy suffering through a minumum wage job, dealing with sexual harassment, sitting alone in her one room apartment eating noodles out of a cup? absolutely fucking devastating and way too real
but also: buffy leading a revolution of people who are forced to work literally until they die, with a hammer and scythe in hand? the symbolism, the boldness of it all? fucking awesome
#i probably have a lot more to say to be honest#give it time#buffy#btvs#buffy the vampire slayer#buffy summers

buffy is SO constantly put on the "gotta make everyone else feel better by being sunshiny and capable and fine all the time" pedestal, that she'll lie to all of her friends and tell them they brought her back from a hell dimension to avoid making them feel bad, when she was actually brought back from some kind of heavenly place where she'd finally found peace -- and it's oddly similar to anne on this watch (s2 ending and s5 ending have a certain echo to me), when she's gone to take care of herself and everyone falls to pieces without her, and it is considered her job to coddle them and she is judged if she doesn't feel sufficiently well, they do have an expectation about her as a pillar of stability, even right after she's been brought back from the dead and made to dig her way out of her coffin (willow saying she feels let down that buffy wasn't being grateful from the beginning is the real indicator of the beginning of willow's villain-arc), and buffy instinctively knows this at this point, so the second she has the ability to... speak full sentences... she uses those to express her gratitude so that they feel okay

Everyone "I can't believe Willow murdered someone. There were never any signs that she's capable of something like this. It's always the person you least suspect"
Willow in the years leading up to it "If Parker shows up we'll hatchet murder him." "Hurt Buffy and I'll beat you to death with a shovel" "I'm very powerful and maybe it's not such a good idea for you to piss me off"

Dawn, listen to me. Listen… I love you. I will always love you. But this is the work that I have to do… Tell Giles that… tell Giles I figured it out, and, and I'm okay… And give my love to my friends. You have to take care of them now. You have to take care of each other. You have to be strong. Dawn, the hardest thing in this world… is to live in it… Be brave. Live. For me.

The first day of kindergarten, you cried because you broke the yellow crayon, and you were too afraid to tell anyone. You've come pretty far, ending the world, not a terrific notion. But the thing is, yeah. I love you. I love crayon-breaky Willow and I love, scary, veiny Willow. So if I'm going out, it's here. If you wanna kill the world, well, then start with me. I've earned that. You think I won't? It doesn't matter. I'll still love you.

something that I think about frequently is how different the ending of angel feels compared to the ending of btvs. yes, the ending of btvs was heartbreaking but it was more bittersweet. they lost people along the way, they had a lot of grieving to do still but they did it; the world had fundamentally changed. it feels like they did what they set out to do.
the ending of angel is devastating. the message to me is that evil will prevail, that all they can do is do their best to fight it even when it doesn’t do anything. and yes, every life saved counts and the struggle is not pointless but they gave absolutely everything (everyone!!) and still in the end there is no sweet, there is only bitter. they don’t have anything or anyone to get back to. and that is just how the world is and how the world will continue to be.
the perfect metaphor for this is that in the last scenes of btvs it is perfectly sunny, while angel ends in pouring rain.

the character arc of wesley wyndam pryce is truly so underappreciated. wesley at the end of angel s5 is almost incomparable to wesley in buffy s3 but all of it makes so much sense considering all the fucked up things that happend in between

it is so wild to me that this scene happens so closely to some of the most heartbreaking, character-developing moments in angel. pinnacle of television

if buffy took place today she would have a ring camera set up to watch the outside of her house, and would use it to yell at Spike for lurking through the speakers

one thing I love about Buffy is that usually when the protagonist is the chosen one they are so annoyingly humble about it. as if constantly being told you are chosen and special would not fundamentally impact who you are as a person. Buffy is constantly aware that she is special and the responsibility that comes with it and at times it crushes her but at other times she revels in the power and agency it gives her. thats why I would have loved to see how Buffy adjusts after the whole „every potential is now a slayer“-plotline. I think you can already see the beginning of this with Kendra and later (eventhough to a lesser extent) with Faith.
#buffy#btvs#the scene where she talks to the watchers council in the magic shop is a great example#kendra btvs#faith btvs#buffy summers#buffy the vampire slayer#btvs spoilers#buffy slander will not be tolerated she can do no wrong in my eyes

Watching Buffy for the first time and this shit slaps so hard. Bad guy vampires just resurrected a big, ugly blue demon called 'The Judge' who reportedly 'can't be killed by any weapon forged' and stupid me was like "Oh, I bet she'll light him on fire or kill him with her hands or something of that nature." No. Rocket launcher. Launched a rocket at him and he fucking died. Awesome.

"why does a man do what he mustn't? for her. to be hers. to be the kind of man who would nev- to be a kind of man. and she shall look on him with forgiveness... and everybody will forgive and love. and he will be loved." SHUT UUUUUP!! who the hell told my boy william that he is a bad poet? who dared to say such a nasty disgusting lie? what is it then, if not one of the most beautiful things he has said?? LINE UP AGAINST THE WALL, IT`S GONNA GET UGLY
