I love Root so much. The juxtaposition between the cutesy art and the horrifically violent theme is endlessly funny to me. Like. Here’s some of the card art
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then the flavor text is shit like: “You’re the true voice of this woodland. Dissenters will burn” and players have abilities called Guerilla Warfare and Oppress the Weak.
Anyways, y’all should play Root, it’s actually a really fun game.

Was at board game cafe with some friends and deeply surprised I'd somehow never played Root before. Genuinely asymmetric but balanced-seeming in a way that scratches a deep itch.
Also incredibly enamored with the world it conjures. Redwall but the mice/rabbits(/foxes) are the oppressed peasantry forming a guerrilla resistance against avian reactionary absolutism and feline industrial colonialism. I want to watch that cartoon.

My favourite thing about Root is the Plausible Deniability.
Sorry, but the Birds MUST attack you, that's what their rules state, their player has nothing against you. Vagabond is feeding you cards, but even if it makes them your ally mechanically - it doesn't mean they won't haunt your bases next turn. Woodland alliance grows everything like a weed until they flip the board.
The designer of the game always calls it a 'mean' game, and it really can be, but it's also just how a wsr game is played and there are no hard feelings afterwards.
It's a mean war game, all in an extremely cute package, which is also very fun to play and leaves no hard feelings between the players.
except vagabond keep-rushers, these people are just plain mean. my homies don't keep-rush cats.
Quick and less structured post.
Wanted to talk about what makes Root so special and unique to me. The first thing that comes to mind is the way the asymmetry is used in the game to create an environment where there are clear and set rules that are then subverted by every faction in a new way, but that's not all. Every faction has unique interactions with eachother making no match the same and also creating interesting ways the game changes, "what will happen if the lizards and moles have to face off" you'll ask yourself after a couple of games.
And that's still not the main attraction to it for me, the biggest reason I love root is the fact the game is a small ecosystem where every player plays their part and if one starts limping or is taken down that ecosystem breaks and pushes someone ahead thus encouraging the players to keel eachother on even footing till the final stretch comes in. It keeps the table civil and everyone in the game until the very end and that's just something many games fail at for me.

I want a hilarious fic where Nico accidentally calls Vergil some variation of “Dad” but like, it the way some kids accidentally call their teacher “mom”.
Like, she doesn’t actually see him as a father, but she Does see Nero as a brother. With him occasionally pulling the “c’mon dad” line out to get Vergil to do something, she’s picked up mentally referring to him as “dad” sometimes too.
I just think I would be funny (and literally Anyone would be a better dad for her than Agnus. Fuck that jackass. She deserves better)

Trish in theory: A demon strong enough to throw motor vehicles, who wields powerful magic to shapeshift and command the elements. Was trusted by Dante to bear Devil Sword Sparda, as well as Ombra and Luce, and she knows how to use them. Once served Mundus but had a change of heart and helped defeat him, much like Sparda himself. Has the face of a dead woman who happens to be the mother of her first real friend, and she just lives with that.

Is there a way to make NMS... More creative than the Creative Mode? Like, infinite inventory and every item in it kind of thing? Minecraft God Mode? I wanted to test pets' eggs mutations and shipbuilding, to see what it could even look like, but you need both irl time for the eggs and resources+time for the shipbuilding, and I wanna know if there is a way to skip this...

I have such a deep love for Virgil both in the clown way and the appreciation for his character way. Like I love calling him a massive fucking nerd because he is (no one can convince me other wise, he's just on the other side of nerd like Dante) but my mans is such a deeply hurt character. Someone who has gone through the worst torture, thinkingnhe failed his family and probably feeling so abandoned. I can't imagine how he felt when he realized he had a son. Like actually had the time to process it.
I know there's this idea he's a deadbeat, but I believe he had no idea Nero existed. I genuinely think he found out day of actually meeting him with Dante there. Oh man the complex emotions in that, his child feeling abandoned just like him. Yet, I also think Virgil sees Nero as a better version of himself. Sure Nero is as brash as Dante, but he's so much more stable and confident in himself than the twins ever were. Which is crazy because he was raised in a cult.
Anyways lore dmc is heavy and makes me love the characters so much but also I have the silliest fucking headcanons for them.

stellar blade makes me seethe in rage, I want all copies of the game destroyed with an orbital laser and the men-in-black erased from history
that's precisely why I am avoiding this topic as much as humanly possible
