I love the theory about how in twow Bran will save Theon by speaking through the weirwood as Stannis is about to execute him. because on one hand it will be such a nice moment for both Bran and Theon. and on the other hand I really want to see Stannis reacting to what appears to be a talking tree

28mm A Song of Ice and Fire: Fury

Hi again! 

Bit of a delay since the last post, but finally finished off this one after a pretty unreasonable amount of time. (Working up the motivation to paint 116 oars was a challenge)

There’s a few great ASoIaF projects on the go on the Lead Adventure Forum, including some nautical additions. People have mused about the idea of running a Battle of the Blackwater game, which got me inspired to put together a ship of my own to represent King Stannis’ Flagship, the Fury.

Part of the problem is nobody seems to make 1/72, 1/56 or 28mm scale medieval galleys at all, there’s a few VERY expensive renaissance ones, and a couple of ancient-world ones, but nothing in between. So with that in mind, I decided to use a Roman Trireme as the base for the ship, using the Zvezda Trireme of the Roman Emperor kit, and try to Medieval-ify it.

GRRM’s nautical descriptions are a bit weird for the setting, with ships having full cabins or large fore/aft castles, or being just absolutely gigantic. But that mercifully gives a bit of leeway with not having to be too rigidly tied in to any especially historical designs. I loosely wanted to model the ship after a Byzantine Dromon by adding the fore/aft castles to the ship, but retaining the Trireme-style hull-shape and oar layout

The figurehead is from a 10cm toy stag, which turned out to be an almost perfect fit for the ship! 

The sail itself is freehand, where thankfully the casting has a grid pattern sculpted on, which made planning the layout much easier! 

So after multiple months of procrastinating, I finally finished the work on building and painting the ship, oars and all

I put together a few siege weapons as well to fit Davos’ description in A Clash of Kings, these are all detachable so that the deck can be filled with miniatures depending on the game:

“Davos could make out Fury well to the southeast, her sails shimmering golden as they came down, the crowned stag of Baratheon blazoned on the canvas. From her decks Stannis Baratheon had commanded the assault on Dragonstone sixteen years before, but this time he had chosen to ride with his army, trusting Fury and the command of his fleet to his wife’s brother Ser Imry, who’d come over to his cause at Storm’s End with Lord Alester and all the other Florents. Davos knew Fury as well as he knew his own ships. Above her three hundred oars was a deck given over wholly to scorpions, and topside she mounted catapults fore and aft, large enough to fling barrels of burning pitch. A most formidable ship, and very swift as well, although Ser Imry had packed her bow to stern with armored knights and men-at-arms, at some cost to her speed.“

And finally, there are two flagpoles on the rear castle, I’ve painted up two sets of flags, one for the vanilla House Baratheon (for a pre-Wo5K scenario in either Robert’s Rebellion or the Greyjoy Rebellion), and the fiery hearts for King Stannis
