vimeo:
As many of you know, finding music for your videos can be somewhat… well, painful. Licensing music on your own can be confusing and finding good free music can take forever. Many of us here at Vimeo are video creators or filmmakers as well and we experience these frustrations on a regular basis. So, we decided to do something about it. Introducing Vimeo Music Store! Vimeo Music Store is your one-stop-shop for finding, discovering and licensing high quality music for your videos. We’ve built a simple and intuitive interface for you to easily search for music using a variety of different music criteria, and then purchase and/or download the tracks you want. Search mood, genre, tempo, themes, instrumentations and then use the advanced search to whittle down the results even further. As of now, Music Store offers over 45,000 curated tracks with a three different license options for you to choose from. Here’s the skinny: Creative Commons-licensed music is curated and provided by Free Music Archive, one of the most-respected curators of Creative Commons-licensed music. There are many different Creative Commons licenses available, so make sure to learn more about Creative Commons and how to use them in our FAQ. Paid music tracks are provided by Audiosocket, a music and media company that curates its content to deliver up-and-coming talent to the marketplace. Audiosocket’s catalog includes over 33,000 songs from more than 1900 emerging bands, composers and record labels from around the world. Audiosocket’s catalog offers both personal, non-commercial licenses for $1.99 per track and commercial licenses for $98 per track. As a a token of our appreciation, we’re offering all Plus and PRO members one FREE, personal license track (a $1.99 value). This offer is only available for one week starting today, so make sure to head over to Music Store and cash in! We’re very excited about this first phase of Vimeo Music Store and we hope you like it. Look for more features, more partners and more options for bands and musicians in the future!

"Hip Hop isn't dead...it just returned home."
Tumblr media
People always say that Hip Hop is dead. But the Hip Hop that I initially started listening to was some of the best. The Latifas, Special Eds, EPMDs, BDPs, early NWAs, Eric B and Rakims and others didn't get a lot of radio play. Back then, there was no such thing as "Underground hip hop." Hip Hop WAS underground. People didn't make tons of money off of it. It was just done for the art, the love , and the competition. Rap videos weren’t played on MTV (back when MTV actually PLAYED videos), rappers didn’t make a lot of money, and hip hop created local celebrities rather than international superstars. While I can't stand a lot of the stuff that passes for hip hop on the radio, I understand that “Radio Hip Hop music” has actually become “Pop Music.” This isn’t a knock. I like some pop music and any music that achieves mass appeal (big ups Gang Starr!) actually BECOMES pop music. I mean isn’t “Pop” short for “POPULAR”?? It happened to Rock n Roll and R&B, and it’s happening to Hip Hop. Hip Hop purists just need to accept that fact. Perhaps we’d feel more comfortable if we called it something different. How about, “Hip Pop???” Much like Darwinism’s assertion that man and ape descended from a common ancestor, Hip Hop and Hip Pop have an evolutionary relative but they still coexist as separate species today. I won’t venture to define which is the ape, and which is the human but that’s not the point. There are episodes on the Discovery Channel about both! (LOL) And we can enjoy them both for what they are without being disappointed at what they aren’t. Once upon a time Hip Hop could dwell in the bright lights and big cities of commercialized music but that day is gone. There is just too much business involved and too many hands in the pot. So Hip Hop returned home. To the blocks and the basements, the small clubs and the corners and there are now millions of people worldwide who enjoy it as it was when it began. I’m encouraged when I see videos of Buff 1, 14 KT, Marv 1, Invincible, Now On, and others at local clubs or over in Europe rockin the mic to droves of people who nod in unison. I honestly believe that these “underground” artists would rock the mic whether they got paid or not. Sounds a lot like KRS-One and BDP (circa “fresh for 88 you suckas!!!”) to me. Hip hop isn’t dead…it has actually just returned home.

Milk Carton MCs
Tumblr media
As I was listening to some old school Hip-Hop yesterday, I was reminded of some MCs who were hot back in the day but fell off the face of the earth. I’ve ranked my top 10 (based on skill and popularity) and I omitted groups (so Black Moon and Crucial Conflict didn’t make the list). I would be interested to know who you would add to the list. I've included some of my favorite YouTube vids and I tried to find the ones without profanity. Feel free to comment. I love a good Hip Hop debate. 1.) Special Ed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Xsp-kaFS9I 2.) Spice 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE10HgVCUtM) 3.) Boss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGMejlRB2Wk) 4.) Chubb Rock (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJwPT6YsnzI) 5.) D-Nice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UuFHMnWMRo) 6.) MC Eiht (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpL7vV8c24g) 7.) Master Ace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UmVrW2Tghs) 8.) AMG (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XImU3fQi2s8) 9.) DC Scorpio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbQj5kXqHaI) 10.) I think there is a real market for smart comedy with realistic Black lead characters. The Misadventures of AWKWARD Black Girl is a HILARIOUS series on Youtube.  I definately recommend it and hope they create a series based on its characters!

This is so inspiring. I'd definitely recommend listening to this kind of stuff daily. You are the result of what you see, read, hear, experience, etc. Pop culture isn't always positive or developmentally beneficial. Things like this help counteract the negative.
