Usually the focus of Beauty with purpose is on the children. But in this round you have the liberty to choose your cause. It should be about a problem your assigned country faces. Your attire, food and habits should match the country you have been given. And your personality should woo us over ! We shall give you a list of profiles at 12:00 that you might use to your advantage !

Scientology

Scientology is a body of religious beliefs and practices invented in May 1952 by American author L. Ron Hubbard. Hubbard initially developed a program of ideas called Dianetics. Dianetics is a set of ideas and practices regarding the metaphysical relationship between the mind and body created by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Dianetics is practiced by followers of Scientology. Dianetics wasn’t the most welcoming of religion nor was L.Ron Hubbard. It has been long speculated that he started Scientology as a religion to make money.

Scientology does not have the best reputation. It has been called a cult and a manipulative commercial enterprise. The Church of Scientology has been involved in criminal activities. Hubbard's followers engaged in a program of criminal infiltration of the U.S. government popularly known as Operation Snow White which later exposed the Scientology plot 'Operation Freakout'. Germany classifies Scientology groups as an "anti-constitutional sect" while in France they have been classified as a dangerous cult.

When faced with possible indictment in the United States, Hubbard went into hiding in April 1979. On January 24, 1986, L. Ron Hubbard died and David Miscavige became the new leader of Scientology. Miscavige has been viewed as a "ringleader" of a "hugely profitable global racket that survives by intimidating members and critics in a Mafia-like manner". Allegations by former high-ranking executives of Scientology state that Miscavige had repeatedly humiliated and physically beaten his staff, and had confined church members in degrading conditions in a Scientology-owned property known as "The Hole". David’s family members (former Scientology members) are critical of him and have disassociated themselves from him.

Scientology has been highly criticized for its various stances and activities. Scientology has been a strong opponent of psychiatry and in 1969 started an anti-psychiatry movement through the Citizens Commission on Human Rights International (CCHR). Lisa McPherson, a Scientologist died in 1995 under the care of the Church of Scientology and the Church was indicted on two felony charges, abuse and/or neglect of a disabled adult and practicing medicine without a license.

The Sea Organization (Sea Org) is a Scientology organization described as a "fraternal religious order, comprising the church's most dedicated members". In addition to other criminal activities, 1,500 abortions have been carried out in the Sea Org since the implementation of a rule in the late 80s. The church has been accused of pressuring/forcing members to have an abortion.

Scientology is notorious for its disconnection or shunning. Disconnection is the severance of all ties between a Scientologist and a friend, colleague, or family member deemed to be antagonistic towards Scientology. In cases when family members leave the Church, the other family members are forced to stop all communications and severe ties. Children are separated from their parents. Former members are ostracised and are victim to threats and organized harassment from the church.

Task at hand:

As the PROs of the Church of Scientology, you are required to defend the allegations made against them and devise PR strategies to clean up the image of Scientology. You are also required to come up with a PR campaign to bring in more followers worldwide.

Can't Trust Facebook

Facebook has continuously faced huge backlash on several things like it coming out with its new digital currency Libra and various data scandals. Facebook’s political ads policy that allows politicians to lie on its platform has, unsurprisingly, turned into a mess.

In the past as well with the revelation that Cambridge Analytica accessed private Facebook data of users and deployed it to help politicians win elections, Facebook has faced a backlash. There is a campaign to delete Facebook profiles. The fact that Cambridge Analytica used the data it collected for the election campaign of Ted Cruz and Donald Trump shows your psychographic profile can be put to multiple uses and land with various interested parties. Cambridge Analytica harvested 50 million Facebook profiles of Americans to construct their psychographic profiles. This data can travel from politicians to private companies to governments. Moreover, it also faces pressure tests from politicians and political groups, as Facebook is starting to make exceptions to its policy that it won’t fact-check advertisements published by politicians. It’s a position CEO Mark Zuckerberg in particular has taken a hard line on. Critics said the move would give politicians complete freedom to create deliberately misleading advertisements that could be promoted to millions of people on the social network. They argue that political campaigns use of the company's "advanced targeting tools" and "behavioural tracking tools" was not conducive to proper political discourse. Facebook has argued that by not fact-checking political ads it is merely mirroring the standards used for broadcast television which has to run ads from candidates regardless of their accuracy. 

Facebook’s plans to launch its very own cryptocurrency was met with heavy opposition, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Libra proposal to Congress was hijacked into a hearing of the company’s past mishandling. To put it briefly, the social media company’s involvement in the Cambridge Analytica and election controversies had broken its trust with the authorities. Without a clear structure for regulation, there are concerns that Zuckerberg’s new Libra project could undermine the national dollar, as well as contain loopholes for criminals to exploit.

Task at hand

As the CEO of Facebook, (Mark Zuckerberg) you need to defend the reputation of the company in the light of all these allegations at a senate hearing. Also, you need to convince the Senate and get them to trust and approve the new plans and policies proposed by Facebook. Research is the thing which will help you thrive in your senate hearing. This senate round will test your diplomatic and rebuttal skills. No report is required for this round but you can note down and bring important strategies and plans to help you for your round.

Trump or Tramp

Donald John Trump is the 45th and current president of the United States. Before entering politics, he was a businessman and television personality. Trump's political party affiliation has changed numerous times and he is known to be politically incorrect.

Presidential approval polls taken during the first ten months of Trump's term have shown him to be the least popular U.S. president in history. His twitter presence and love-hate relationship with the press have turned eyes. As president, Trump has frequently made false statements in public speeches and remarks. Trump has made numerous comments and has been characterized as a white supremist. Twenty-two women have publicly accused Trump of sexual misconduct. The release of his “locker room talk” tape worsened things.

He threatened to close DACA for immigrants. He participated in hush payments via his lawyer, Michael Cohen and possible Russian collusion as per the Mueller report. He has been criticised for his denial of climate change and separation of children from their families at the border.

Trump launched a trade war against China and increased visa restrictions on Chinese and other nationality students and scholars and the ongoing impeachment inquiry against him regarding the Ukrainian deal have made matters worse.

Overall, Trump is not reviewed as a smart man. Approval ratings for Trump and his Vice President, Mike Pence are low.
