This is exactly why I’m so hooked to this game! Just started it cuz I saw it was on sale and oh my god it’s narratively probably one of the best games I’ve played ever (I’m not done but still the way the narrative is right now is so different from prior games I’ve played- granted I don’t play much)

Usually RPG games have you play as a regular joe. It’s not anything bad, it’s probably even good as it gives you opportunities to make literally whatever good or bad decision you want. You’re a hero through and through, or an absolute menace.

But rogue trader is a breath of putrid air (affectionately). You start off immediately as a person of EXTREMELY high power. So much it’s insane. Most people cannot afford to offend you, and you live as the 0.001% of humanity. It makes the otherwise good bad and neutral decisions feel stilted, and the game knows that!!

You can be good, and tbh I think a rogue trader can have good intentions, but if will always be at the cost of someone else’s power over themselves. You will rule over them for the better, but you rule over them still. You can treat your subjects better but you still require them to serve you to continue your schemes. I love iconoclast (cuz I like making my characters suffer). My RT is currently a civilian turned sudden political Goliath and has to now grapple with his dwindling care for helping the common folk and the sacrifices he makes to uphold the von Valancious legacy (Rykad minoris was not a fun time lmao)

Love this game to bits it’s my first intro to war hammers. I am 100% the deep dive is going to be crazy

it's kind of reductive to describe the iconoclast route as the nice guy btw, because rogue trader by the job description is not nice at all. those absolutely mind-boggling levels of exploitation, violence and extractivism are specifically so that rt could live in comfort, rt very actively supports the imperium and prolongs the existence of that system. it's very much the point that rogue trader is awful, before we even begin to discuss the alignments

now, a dogmatic or heretical rt would see no problem with that, but iconoclasm presupposes some degree of independent thinking and care for other people (even though rt's motivations can be quite different). and there's obviously a contradiction between one's belief in the inherent value of human life and having colonies. so i kinda think an iconoclast rogue trader who stays in that role must either work very hard to stay ignorant of this contradiction or somehow reconcile the two in their head. it's fucked-up in any case though. like yeah, you might get lucky to meet the rogue trader in person and have your life spared, but it's all extra rations for the day of the coronation and then we go back to normal, it is mercy that is very situational and selective, there's always that degree of hypocrisy to it. and that's a rather defining aspect of the character, you know

it's so upsetting when ppl complain about not having fics to read but refuse to read wips like ?? this isn't a book store this is a community... the authors are less likely to finish it if y'all only show their work love after it's done...

i know WIPs can be frustrating because they don't always update constantly or consistently. sometimes they get abandoned. sometimes they go on hiatus for long periods of time.

trust me, i get it. but the fanfic community and fanfic writers thrive on people supporting their works in progress. "there aren't any fics to read" - no there ARE, you're just not reading them.

ao3 isn't netflix. you very rarely get a finished product all in one go that's not a one shot. that defeats the purpose of being able to upload individual chapters at different times.

we as a society are too used to instant gratification and "binging." fanfic wasn't designed for that. if you want to "binge read," go buy a published book. if you want to participate in fandom, support writers who are putting their work out there for free without any compensation other than your love, support, and encouragement.
