my favorite thing about john gaius is that i often need to be reminded that he's evil. like i'll be trucking along engaging with him as a normal guy who's just a bit of a dick. i don't like him much, he makes some bad choices, says some insensitive things, but he's just john. he's just john who's a bit of a dick. he could be your manager at any retail job, a teacher with an annoying grading policy, a relative you don't like visiting. sometimes illogical, sometimes insensitive, sometimes failing to read the room, as people sometimes do. and then something happens. he says something, does something, and the john normalguy facade slips for just an instant, just a moment, and i go "ohhhh right he's an evil wizard who wiped out all life on earth and then crowned himself god-emperor of a warmongering necromancer space empire and he's currently wearing a crown made from the bones of human babies. i had. forgotten."

Seeing PresAux advocate for MurderBot's personhood is touching but also extremely funny from an outsider's pov. Like someone gently patting the side of a military tank and going, this is our good friend Death Machine 5000 🥺 please be nice to it 🥺🥺🥺

This post has just turned into people listing increasingly egregious examples of real-life capitalist Frankenbrands and ohhhhh we live in hell don’t we. This is the bad place. Hell is empty and all the devils are named AstraZeneca and AOLTimeWarner.
My favorite small detail in the Murderbot Diaries is how many of the shitty corporations have names that sound like two names mashed together—GrayCris, BreharWallHan, Barish-Estranza, etc—because to me it just screams “corporate merger.” It’s something that real companies do with their names when they’re monopolizing, where two companies of comparable sizes just mash their two brands together to make a horrible Frankenbrand. Like how it’s Warner Bros-Discovery now, or the names of publishing companies like Penguin Random House and HarperCollins. It’s just some subtle worldbuilding that signifies how the dystopian capitalist hellscape of the Corporation Rim formed through the very mundane acts of corporate inbreeding that we see all the time

Imo missing Gideon is part of the experience of reading Harrow the Ninth. Everyone who read GtN goes to HtN like "but where is Gideon? How can I read this book without her??" And that is just like. Part of the book. Her absence. It hurts. You feel it. Youre mystified by it. Where is she?? I love it.
