Final Presentation
For the final presentation we chose the Limmatplatz as our setting.
We wanted to put the audience into the position of the observes and actors, thus when they arrived, Raphael was already standing there and texting with Laida. The class started fast interacting with the iPad. In general I think we have chosen the right format to present our topic to the class.

Independent Study 19.12.18
As we were filming the previous day until 7 o’clock in the evening we had a lot of films to cut and to compile, and as well to evaluate our observations, this kept us busy for the day. You can watch the film here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f-Aq77TkKE&t=14s

Independent Study 18.12.18
On the 18. 12. 18 we went to the limmatplatz to observe the peoples reaction upon the live-conversation on the iPad. Laida and Raphael were both wearing and iPad on their back and people could type into and join the conversation of them. Furthermore we had the possibility of taking selfies with the people and transmitting the pictures as an immediate feedback on the iPad screen.
We made various observations:
Some people stood more in the background and observed Raphael or Leida’s back, where the private chat was live transmitted. They took pictures, but did it very fast and tried to hide it as well. Thus we felt an insecurity whether they were allowed to take pictures of it or not. One man for example took first a picture and afterwards he went to Laida and asked her if she was aware that the iPad on here back was on and that one could read her private chat. In fact that happened a few times.
In an other case a group of teenagers was standing in front of the iPad and we could hear their discussion about whether they had the right to read the messages which were presented on the iPad or not. Thus one girl argued they shouldn’t read it because it’s private.
Some people were curious about our work and started a conversation with us about privacy, which gave us a feeling, that they understood our messages. A few people stoped and tried to actually read the messages which were written on the iPad. Some people asked if that was a knew trend and others tried to join the conversation and started typing something into it.
In conclusion if we think to our main goal of creating awareness about how people value their own privacy it’s hard to say if we have achieved that, because we don’t know how people understand what we have showed them. But I think what we definitely have achieved is creating a starting point for a conversation or bringing people to think about their privacy and how would it feel for them if their private conversation would be shown in public and furthermore even challenging the question if they if it is really private when they text on whats app?
Unfortunately as people mostly looked quickly or took pictures, only a few people payed attention to our content.

Privacy backpack 13.12.2018
We reflected our first intervention and took some learnings out of it, which we want to challenge or advance in our second intervention, which is going to happen on the 18.12.18. Furthermore we created new scenarios for our second intervention.
On our first intervention, when we were walking on the street with the iPad on the back, the street a person wanted to join the conversation illustrated on the iPad. This questions lead to the idea that that it might be very interesting if a third person enters and disturbs the private conversation.
The hack of privacy would happen on two levels, primarily it’s a private conversation which is shown in public and furthermore if a stranger intervenes into the conversation, than you won’t even have the control of the conversation.
In order to invite people to join the conversation we created some badges with the word „Type here“ or an emoji which signalizes that people could write there.
Furthermore we wanted to challenge the theme of privacy in the conversations. In order to enable a better understanding of our message.  Thus we addressed different topics, which approached the theme privacy on different levels. For example we labeled conversations about bank account s and passwords as very private, political opinions a bit less privat, love talks and mother child conversations were somewhere in-between and topics about shopping or doctor appointments were labeled as less private.
We had to different way to confront the people on the street. One was to use whats app web, where people had the possibility to read the messages, but also to join the conversation or to go out of WhatsApp and try something else on the iPad . Secondly we synchronized the iPad screen with our iPhone screen, which enabled us to take selfies with the people behind us and present it immediately on the iPad screen as an immediate feedback.
Furthermore we did two iPad bags, so one was carried by a female and an other was carried by a male. That was more out of curiosity if there would be any kind of difference in the interaction, but it also enabled us to film two people on the same time on two different places. So, that was our preparation for the upcoming intervention.
On this day we also finizialised our two prototypes

Input and Presentation of our Independent Study 11.12.2018
This morning we have received an input about hacking in art from Beate Schlingelhoff. She is an artist and teaches art at ZHdK. For our progress or better said our evaluation about our intervention on last Friday, her input gave us some topics to think about. Anonymity of the artist/intervening person and the amusement in a serious topic for example. Things we saw at our intervention as well and were maybe surprised about. What does it mean for example if somebody is being amused about the fact being able to read other, in our case Rafaels, private text messages. In between, while I’m writing this people are looking into my screen. So my privacy wich is writing about public privacy gets public. *lol*
After our presentation we discussed in the group how we would like to go further. It is still clear for us three that our interests are in bringing the theme of privacy in public to a visuality and emphasize the topic to the people but without judging or being critical on it. We realized, that nearly a joy/desire of interacting with our back construction happened. So we want to try to ad another screen to some of our group so we have zwo participants, who are geographically apart but still connected by texting. How are people from different places reacting to a equal time happening wich in our case are the text messages. We want to concretize the content of the writing. How much is possible and what is to much? Is there a boarder? Are people even reading it or just being amused by the fact somebody is walking around with a sticked iPad on the back? With a keyboard attached to the device we could invite people to hack the chat too. So the observer changes his role to a performer. The places we find more interesting due of more interaction will are the tram stops. More than in the tram were people are mostly sitting and in their own private space. Will our further going intervention change something or give an awareness about our topic?

Independent Study 7.12.2018
On Friday morning we met again and started brainstorming in order to determine how to continue our project.
Do we want to further investigate into creating private space in a public areas, as we have presented in our first prototype or do we want go into an other direction?
In our first field research we spied into peoples phone and implemented the gained information into our conversations. Some people reacted with strange looks and some people didn’t even notice.
Thus we came to the conclusion before further continuing to get the peoples opinion about privacy. In order to do that we repeated our first field research and spied again at peoples phone, but this time we confronted them and told them that we were spying on them and confessed the information which we gained from them. Surprisingly(for us) most people except from two, were very indifferent about that. They said it’s okey, I don’t have a problem with it, You can read it, it’s not really very privat.
Because of this reactions we came to the conclusion to create something which sensibilizes people to the the value of privacy. In order to so we made a public chat on an iPad which we located on the back of Rafi. Rafi and Leida were writing together, while their conversation could be seen by the public. The content of the conversation was very privat and still it was seen by everyone. It should emphasize the notion that nothing what your writing online is really private.
It was really cool to see how people reacted or interacted with it. A lot came to look and read and some wanted to write on it. Nevertheless I guess it still has points which we can be improved. As the screen of the iPad is still small, not everyone comes by and reads it. Also the size of the letters aren’t so good readable. Furthermore we could improve the content which we present on the screen in order to have a better impact.

Evaluation of the first fieldresearch 6.12.18
After our field research, we organised our collected content. Highlighted the good, the meaningful, the interesting, the surprising photos and videos and sticked them in a little presentation to show our material. (you can see them in our next post)
But How?
We looked on the reaction of the observed ones. Did they realised that we looked on them or not, or did other people mention us around doing the observation and what was their reaction?
What have we seen, what was on their screens, what for information do they share unintentionally or do they realise their public handling with their secret information and privacy? Do they care about it or not?
We realized that it was very easy to get the personal information about other people (bank accounts, WhatsApp, love letter, holidayplaning, job information, mails, adressbooks…) just by looking some seconds on their screens. The observed didn’t realize it or if the did no reaction came.
We went a step further and integrated the information we have seen on the screen into a conversation. So we mentioned for example a name from the chat in a chatting next to the person. Not everybody was surprised but in some face you could see the surprise and the question of coincidence or planed action.
A question of the other participant of our course were, how we would have react if a observed one would have say something. Good question for us, but we didn’t know.
We had to present as well a quick prototype. Our idea was to enclose even more or to hide this private content from the other. With a handle you can pull a tube will come down and give you a visual separated room where you can watch at your private stuff without anyone seeing. For example in the public transportation it can be helpful. The prototype is orientated by the emergency respiratory masks in the airplanes. But do we really want to support the idea of separating from public space or is our interest more in bringing awareness to people?
After all presentations and the input of Clemens about creating atmosphere in small, big and immense space we had time for a playfull experiment with flour, air and water. A big mess at the end with nearly pizza dough on the floor.
How could it go on?
Do we want to promote for more privet place or on the other hand for the enlightenment of the handling with privet information in public space while thinking handling in private space. Or promote more the contra action, the integration of the public? We don’t know jet and will discuss tomorrow about the topics: Intimacy, privacy, public, digital world, social media, interaction in real, promotion or exclusion…
