[Piece 1] Rensouhou-chan!
Tumblr media
Rensouhou, Shimakaze’s best buddy from Kancolle. DAS clay, acrylic paint. 11cm tall.
My first model I made! its a hollow body, which to me is such a brilliant idea. the stuff i’m doing right now aren’t cylinders and polygon shapes, which meant that sadly i didn’t get to use that skill again.
The detailed pictures make it look so unsmooth! Feelsbadman...
I’m not satisfied with how the coloring turned out now that i think back about it. The grey didnt’ turn out the way i wanted it to be and also, i didn’t like how shiny the acylic paint is. But i’m not sure if i want to invest in matte paint right now, then i’d have so much paint that i’m not using.
Using the propeller as the third foot is pretty ideal too, made the whole thing much more stable.
(Secretly still working on a big Shimakaze, but its hard... life is hard...)

Buying new air dry clays?
I have no clue what clay to get next. My Fimo air basic is already half used, so its time for me to start thinking of buying some new clay.
Thinking about getting some Das brand, since i used that before. Smells terrible but when it dries it feel stronger than the Fimo. If i had to compare it, it’s more like ceramic and Fimo is more like plaster? Would be useful for making bits that need more strength. Will I die from this if i used this again?
Considering getting more Fimo for doing detail stuff, its pretty smooth and nice to work with because it doesn’t smell. Dries a bit faster than i like.
Also Hobbytime Keramiplast? Never used it, but it looks interesting. If this gives me more working time than the other two, it might be a sizable advantage. Between getting more tried and true materials and adventuring with other clay, I’m not sure which I prefer?

[Piece 3] Sword of Avalon
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original Saber sword from the original Fate/Stay Night series. Modelled with Fimo air basic clay, painted with acrylic. 22.5cm tall. Sword can be pulled out. I promise, the swords is actually metallic silver, not that grey color on the photo...
I think it turned out pretty well. The sword being able to be pulled out was what I had in mind but i had serious doubts about how strong the Fimo clay is (First time using it). It seems that with a double twisted garden wire inside as skeleton was more than enough.
-Modelling-
The modelling took me around 2 weeks to finish, with it being a pretty single layered piece. the difficulty was the details. Especially the grooves are hard to make because to make sharp edges, i have to let it dry first then carve it out using a utility knife. Probably should invest in a exacto blade.
-Painting-
I started with a grey base coat that i applied twice. the thin coats allowed me another chance to sand and smoothen the surface. However, it was only acrylic paint. I would like to use some sort of glue primer, like gesso? something that would actually glue onto the clay.
Some of the colors took more coats than others (gold and blue), but i think i managed to end up with opaque colors. In many spots where i accidentally slipped and painted blue onto gold parts, i managed to use white to deck out the color. Lesson learnt: keep more of the base coat around, for consistent color.
Also, i applied matte acrylic finish on the rocks and satin finish on the sword and scabbard, but it didn’t seem to do much... maybe i should try 3-5 layers?
Gold and Silver also are strongly affected by the primer color. Idea: use black to give gold a interesting hue maybe..
Oh and last but not least, the rock! It came out better than i expected, the different shades of grey worked out pretty well. I had hoped to make a more realistic rock, but now it looks more like a borderlands 2 rock, and I actually like it more!
-Last words-
Very happy with the possibilities of the Fimo clay if I can make this level of detail with it. Obviously, not that satisfied with how i handled the details. It is still too rough in the end. I want to find a way to paint a nice and glossy mirrorlike finish, but that might take some more practice. Maybe use thicker layers or a different brush?

Pumayyaton
What a fitting name. With this, I hope to gather my thoughts about what I’ve learnt and try to express my own opinions on this great medium of art, air dry clay. Endless possibilities with what you can do. My interests lie mostly in Anime and manga, and someday, I hope to make something equally detailed as official garage kits.
