How to Play an External Hard Drive on a DVD Player

Most current DVD players, in addition to playing DVD movies, also have the capability to play various forms of media from a compatible hard drive, such as videos, music, and even pictures. Almost all DVD players are built-in USB, SD, MMC, and TF card slot. But most DVD players are only able to read drives formatted in the FAT32 system, and most hard drives come formatted in the NTFS file system.

Therefore, some tweaking and a bit of reformatting is needed before DVD players can play any media from an external hard drive.

Step 1

Plug the hard drive's USB cable into the USB port on the back of the hard drive, then plug the other end into one of your computer's free USB ports.

Step 2

Turn on your computer and your USB hard drive.

Step 3

Click the "Start" button when the operating system has finished loading and click the "Run" option.

Step 4

Type "CMD" into the text box, then press "Enter."

Step 5

Type "Format /FS:FAT32 X:" into the command prompt, replacing the letter "X" with the drive letter of your USB hard drive. If you do not know the drive letter of your hard drive, open "My Computer" and look under "Devices with removable storage." Press "Enter" when you are ready to format.

Step 6

Press "Y" when prompted--assuming you are ready to format the hard drive. Keep in mind that all data present on the drive will be irretrievably erased once it has been formatted. After you press "Y," Windows will format the USB hard drive to the FAT32 file system.

Step 7

Load the files you wish to play on your DVD player onto the USB hard drive. Remember in mind that the FAT32 file system cannot support files larger than 4 GB.

Step 8

Unplug the USB cord from the computer's USB port and plug it into your DVD player. Turn on the DVD player and select "USB Device" to access the USB hard drive, it may be labeled differently depending on your DVD player. From there, simply select the media you wish to view and press "Play."

Decent quality and valued unit

Quality unit that works as advertised. Works well with other car launchers like Agama and Car Launcher Pro. I recommend PowerAmp media player although I'm still figuring out getting the PowerAmp EQ to work properly.

I was slightly skeptical about ordering one of these. But I decided to take a gamble and so far I'm pleased with the unit. Touch sensitivity and response is right on point. It's fairly easy to operate and more customizable than I figured it would be. It's basically just a big cell phone in your vehicle.

Upgrading from a 7" Android head unit to this 10.1" unit I had the advantage of experience with the OS and different car launchers. Take your time and research the capabilites of this PX5 Android head unit and you can do almost anything you want, car stereo-wise. Have fun making your car stereo experience your own.

Awesome single din head unit

This single din touch screen Android unit fits in my 2018 freightliner Sd114.

The plug that came with the radio plugged directly to my stock wiring harness.. did no cutting or tapping into wires.. It was not that hard to install. I was very pleased with the way the unit operates. I had one issue with date not advancing after installing, emailed the support address and within a day had a software update sent to me which was easy to install. Then I made a suggestion to have the current time available on all mode screens and within a week they took my suggestion and sent me another software upgrade to show current time on all screens. Very happy with unit, great sound, easy to use an install, and support team is on it. Thanks to the support team for a good experience.

How to install a headrest DVD player in a car?

Good item and great customer service

This is a review of a cheap Pumpkin head unit with some nicer features like GPS and a decent amount of memory. The unit seems responsive and fast. The screen is not the brightest out of the box and has no obvious knobs to adjust it but if you go into settings (admittedly quite buried in the menus) then you can get brightness and contrast to be OK for daily driving. The sound output is great for my system (I only have two channels) but not sure it would be great for surround. Everything about this unit is cheap but not cheap.  Actually, you do not need a manual - all the pinouts are available in the settings once you power on the unit. The wires are all labeled well (like speaker wires have labels) and the wires on my unit follow standard codes so, for example, my sound was good the first time I hooked everything up. Best of all, when I made a mistake and failed to properly hook up the reverse wire, their tech support spent two days with me by email helping me troubleshoot. It was slow but I have to admire the commitment to the customer.

I just installed the unit so I have no idea if the screen will last or anything to do with longevity. I also think that if you have a few hundred dollars extra and don't want the installation hassle then maybe buy a brand name and have the dealer install it. If money matters though, then this unit is an impressive bargain for the money.

Presently surprised, with product and customer support

I decided to reach out to onlinestore@autopumpkin.com to clarify a few potential issues before purchasing, they were able to answer all my questions pre-purchase so I decided to give it a go.

I was happily surprised with user interface, functionality and build quality.

Onboard Google maps is great however it requires a wifi connection from my phone which isn't a problem as phone is in a wireless charging cradle.

Spotify works nicely via bluetooth music however I could just download the app if I wanted full functionality.

Canbus interface is great too as when I reverse the steering wheel interacts with the guidelines so now I've ordered a reversng camera, ignition stays on until I remove the key fully and display shows what door is open (when I first fitted the product the doors were opposite but customer support guided me through what settings needed changing).

All in all it has turned out to exceed expectations as too has customer support both before and after purchase.

The only problem I encountered with this was the antenna connection, it is a twin unit with both antenna on the one connection, it was easy for me to disassemble one of these and fit another single adaptor as I had one handy, I let support know about this so if your factory unit has 2 separate antenna connections maybe reach out to see if they have a plug and play remedy available by the time you go to buy.
