My Bloody Valentine - Maxwell's, Hoboken, New Jersey, June 1, 1989

We spent a little time at Maxwell's with Kim Deal and the Amps a few weeks ago, and it felt so good that we're heading back to Hoboken once again — this time to catch My Bloody Valentine in 1989! This was part of MBV's very first US tour, but it was also a homecoming of sorts; Kevin Shields was in fact born across the river in Queens before his family returned to Ireland.

My Bloody Valentine is a famously loud live band. What could you do to make them even louder? Why not have Dino Jr's J Mascis behind the soundboard? That's the eardrum-destroying situation we've got on this Max's tape, which comes courtesy of the Fuzzy Blue Rain archive.org account.

It sounds radical, obviously, with the Isn't Anything material getting a jolt of pure, blinding volume, those guitars knocking everyone to their knees (I assume). However, live MBV tapes always remind me that the band had an absolutely massive rhythm section in the form of drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig and bassist Debbie Googe. Together, this duo is unstoppable and righteous, providing something rocksteady for Shields and Bilinda Butcher to float over. Soft as snow, but loud as fuck.
