#bookreview #InThisGraveHour by #JacquelineWinspear #MaisieDobbs This is the 13th novel in the Maisie Dobbs mystery series. I only read the first novel of the series before this one, but hints of the previous stories were scattered throughout. It is a quick read, and good for a trip. Some of the actions seem to be cliche and align well with the flow of mass market paperback mystery series, but it's not as bad as other series. There were many times when two characters were communicating with their eyes only when they wanted to keep their emotions hidden from a third character. The main story involves a survivor of World War 1 whose psyche splinters at a fact that is distorted into a cause for revenge. As a result it's as if the war has not ended. The backdrop is Britain's preparation for World War 2. I look forward to reading books 2-12. #BookReview of #TheWeddingDate by #JasmineGuillory This is a quick #read about the start of a relationship. Because it is about the start there are misunderstandings and assumptions. On the positive side there is sexy joy. The author translates something common into something supercute and magical with wine, donuts, and short plane trips added for extra bling. #bookreview #Dunbar by #EdwardStAubyn I enjoy interpretations of Shakespeare's works, and Dunbar is a #KingLear interpretation. It is a quick read, and the thrilling action continues throughout the #book. Because of the length of the book, and because the action covers a few days there is little character development. The greedy robotic people do not change, the people with vacillating loyalties do not change, and the people with empathy do not change. The main character is given time to regret. #bookreview #Washington #ALife by #RonChernow #bookaddict #bookstagram I've read many books about the Revolutionary War period so many events in this book were familiar. Chernow respects Washington, it's obvious, as did thousands of citizens back in colonial times. He represented the US well internationally and was a political backbone to the fledgling country. He was a slave holder who fought for liberty of people like himself, but to see this contradiction as proof that he was "complex" misses the tone of the book. The stories are laid out so he is understood, but they are not presented for deep analysis. I recommend it, and I will probably reread it.
