On Shiro’s and Sendak’s similarities (or maybe I’m just seeing double)

(art by me) ************this is S3 spoiler free************* I haven’t even watched the last trailer yet. warning: long post It always pains me to see how most of the fandom is depicting Sendak as a bossy motherfucker with a short temper acting like a brutal fighter and enjoying non-con relationships. Seriously, have we seen the same show? Ok, Sendak is a villain (with a high potential for a redemption arc, please Dreamworks don’t let me down on this), but that doesn’t automatically make him an horrid asshole.

Yes, Sendak is a nasty opponent but he still has a lot of common points with Shiro and both stand on an equal foot in terms of leadership and fighting abilities (though I think that if Sendak had a less heavy and bothersome prosthetic he’d move better and thus maybe the result wouldn’t be the same, but I have nothing to support this theory). Actually, they have so many similarities they are literally mirroring each other.

Brain: *instantly constructing a whole story arc–

Krolia and Kolivan are on their way to search for the survived members of the Blade. The two of them have been alone in the space for weeks and getting nowhere. Kolivan comes out onto the bridge one night after a blind search, staring out into the space. Krolia comes up silently at him, puts her hand onto his shoulder. She doesn’t ask him what’s wrong, because she knows exactly how he feels. Kolivan, with his gaze reminds lost into the space, speaks about how it’s started to become a struggle to keep up his hope of finding their lost comrades–their lost friends. But Krolia reassures him that they’ll find them. She mentions some of their mutual friends in the Blade, speaks about how these men and women have survived plenty of tough battles. She reminds Kolivan what a warrior and survivor they are, and that if she could find him, then there’s no reason they couldn’t find the others. Kolivan, with his hope regained, turns to her slightly and smiles, expressing how grateful he is that she and the Paladins had found him and that she’s here with him.

With her hand on his shoulder, they stand close at each other sides, eyes locked, expressions soft. For a moment, it almost seems like it’s heading to be something romantic, but Krolia drops her hand eventually and Kolivan steps away from her at the same time. They don’t get any closer to each other that night, they part ways and return to their separate chambers in the ship.

Later on, they’ve finally been able to track down some of the survived Blades. The Blades are captured. The two of them have come to their rescue. They fight alongside each other, helping each other out the whole time during their mission.

Everything seems to have showed that not only Krolia and Kolivan know each other well, not only they understand each other, respect each other, care deeply about each other, but might also have feelings for each other. However, those feelings are never explored. Whenever they’re getting too close, they’re always making a point of drawing back from one another before it could actually become something explicit.

Then, the war on earth is over, they’ve come to the Garrison for Keith.

While they’re helping Keith with his recovering, Keith couldn’t help but notices there’s some tension between them.

One day, Keith walks into the room and sees the two of them standing close together. They’re not doing anything, they’re just talking to each other gently. But Kolivan steps away from Krolia the moment he spots Keith as if it’ll be inappropriate if he doesn’t, and Krolia does the same.

Keith asks confusedly once Kolivan has left the room, “Alright, what’s going on with you guys?”

It surprises her for a second. “What do you mean?” she returns the question, hesitated.

“You guys are…kind of acting weird,” he points out.

Krolia doesn’t say anything in return. She looks like she’s feeling guilty about something.

Keith regards her for a moment, brows furrowing in confusion until he slowly realizes. “Do you…love him?” he asks.

Krolia looks at him sadly. “I love you,” she says with clarity. “ I loved your father. I still love your father.”

“Mom…” slowly, Keith starts. “–Dad isn’t around anymore.”

Keith comes up to her as she remains silence. “He’s not going to be mad if you find someone who can make you happy. He’d want you to be happy, you know.”

“I know,” Krolia speak with a small smile. Her hand reaching out to hold Keith’s. “Your father is a good man.”

Keith returns the smile. “Kolivan isn’t too bad either.”

“He isn’t,” she softly replied.

After this, nothing seems to have changed between Krolia and Kolivan. Until one day, they’re sitting alone in a room, talking about nothing and everything. Kolivan rises up from his seat and just about to leave the room to her.

“I should go,” he says, knowing for a fact that her love for Keith’s father is strong and respects it and doesn’t want to overstep the boundary.

But to his surprise, Krolia reaches out slowly, catching his wrist before he could step away.

Kolivan turns around to her, standing confused and surprised. Krolia doesn’t say anything at first, looking as unprepared as he is. They both look down at her hand catching his wrist, then their gaze slowly return to each other’s faces.

His face is slightly blushing, and so is hers.

Then quietly, she starts, “Stay.” Her lips move up into a soft smile. “–I’d like you to stay here with me.”

For a moment, he is stunned. Feeling uncertain. Not until seconds later, he replies tenderly while sitting down next to her, “If you’re sure it’s okay.”

She smiles at herself then at him. “It’s okay.”

In the end, She lays her head against his shoulder. They sit in content silence.
