“I get the feeling you’re taking it easy on us,” Raph says.

“That’s no fair!” Mikey whines. “How are we supposed to learn if you’re holding back?”

“Because I’d hurt you if I wasn’t,” Leonardo explains. The thought is tempting sometimes, when it comes to Leo’s continued insistence on calling him ‘Old Blue’ like he’s some kind of elderly hound dog.

He doesn’t actually want to hurt them, though, not in the way they could be if he hit them. There’s occasional slip-ups in training, but Raph’s right, Leonardo is taking it easy on them. They’re accomplished in their own right, but they’re also still teenagers, and not nearly as practised as Leonardo is.

“I could totally beat you,” Leo decides. “I bet the whole ‘taking it easy’ thing is just an excuse so you can save face if one of us wins.”

“That is not what’s happening,” Donnie says from where he lies on his shell on the floor halfway across the gym, not looking away from his phone.

“You said you were putting your headset on noise-cancelling mode,” Mikey points out.

“I also have speech-to-text mode enabled so I can step in when Leo starts being stupid.”

“Shouldn’t that be ‘if Leo starts being stupid’?” Leo asks.

“No.”

Leo: You don’t need perfect people to make a perfect team. You need people whose flaws feed into each other. It’s– what do you call it?

Donnie: Codependence.

Leo: Synergy.

Leo: Peer pressure me into cleaning my room.

Donnie, not looking up from his phone: Do it or you’re straight.

Leo: I said peer pressure, not threaten.

Mikey: Can we get a birthday cake?

Raph: It's not your birthday.

Mikey: The cake won’t know.

Raph: ...What?

Leo: What are the requirements for something being a soup?

Donnie: Water, salt, some sort of vegetation, and preferably some kind of meat…

Donnie: ...Oh my banana pancakes, oceans are soup.

Raph: How did none of you hear what I just said?

Mikey: I've been zoned out for the last two and a half hours.

Donnie: I got distracted about halfway through.

Leo: Ignoring you was a conscious decision.

Mikey: It’s a barren, featureless desert out there, isn’t it?

Donnie: The other side, Mikey.

Mikey, turning the map over: Oh.

"You're joking," Leo says. "The guy who was the first one aboveground to fight the Foot Clan, that guy thinks this city's not worth saving?"

His tone is almost dismissive, the attitude of someone certain he's right and about to prove it. But Raph doesn't rise to the bait like he usually would, just shakes his head.

"I don't. Not if it means losing any of you."

"This is our destiny, Raphael," Leo growls, levity gone. "We were created to be soldiers and we were trained to fight. There's no way we can take all that and just back down, just cause you're scared all of a sudden. Get over it, Raph. This city needs us."

"No, it doesn't. You just want it to."

Donnie glances nervously between them. The unusual quietness in Raph's voice, and Leo's stricken look - it's all leading up to something breaking. He knows it, he's sure he does.

His hands start to tremble.

“C’mon, man,” Leo says, and Nic sighs out loud this time. Leo, not dissuaded, crosses his arms and frowns. “We talked about you staying up so late.” 

Did they? Nic doesn’t really remember that, but he’s not about to admit it to Leo. Apparently part of what makes him such a good leader is that he’s cranky all the time, and that only gets worse when they don’t listen to him. 

Nic really doesn’t need a fight right now, not when he has to finish the last PTD. 

“I’ll go to bed once I finish this,” he says, not looking at Leo as he picks the soldering iron back up. If he starts working with tools, something that could hurt him if he isn’t paying attention, Leo always shuts up to let him concentrate. Nic only feels a little bad for using that against him. 

“You’re not going to be any help to them if you’re exhausted when you get there. You said their Splinter was there, right? He’ll keep ‘em safe, Donnie, just like dad does for us.” 

“What if they get lost again, and I’m not there?” Nic asks, not looking up from his work. “What if their Splinter gets sick? What if the Shredder or Commander Krang finds them, or the Foot Clan attacks their lair?” 

“What do you think you’re going to be able to do if that happens?” 

“Anything,” Nic snarls, slamming the iron down and whirling to face his brother. “Don’t you remember what it was like, helpless and thinking we were watching Sensei die?” 

“Of course I remember that,” Leo says quietly, his voice even in the way it only is when he’s trying not to lose his temper. “We all do.” 

“But you weren’t all there to meet them. You don’t know what they were like, Leo. I have to be able to protect them. I have to be able to be there.” 

“You can’t kill yourself trying to get it done!” Leo scowls at him and uncrosses his arms, turning to leave. Over his shoulder, he says, “Your brothers here need you too, you know.” 

“I know, I–” 

But he’s gone. And Nic still has work to do.
