Terrorist Threats Envelop Times Square

-- Qingqing (Hilary) He
Business usually picks up around Thanksgiving at the I Love New York souvenir store in Times Square, and remains high straight through the New Year. But with the terrorist attacks in Paris, on November 13, sales are down instead of up.
"December is the busiest of the year for us, but this time you can see the business is very slow. Around 40 percent less compared to last year,” Pritom Chowdhury shrugged as he spoke. “Two people already left their jobs here from a month ago. They’re saying that they’re just taking a leave. The thing is maybe they’re going to change their jobs to outside of Times Square.”
Five days after the Paris attacks, ISIS released a propaganda video that alternated footage of Times Square and attackers assembling explosive belts. Despite Mayor de Blasio’s and NYPD Commissioner Bratton’s reassurances, fear has become part of daily life for those who work in the Times Square area.
When Chowdhury leaves his home in Elmhurst, Queens at 7:30 a.m. every weekday, his parents and siblings now kiss him goodbye with concern and anxiety.
“After the Paris incident, almost every day they’re afraid when I’m at work. They always send me texts. They want to know what I’m doing and if everything’s fine or not,” he said. “When you go out from the home, you don’t know that there’s a guarantee for your life. It’s like a game now everywhere. Anytime anything can happen.”
Born and raised in a Bangladeshi Muslim family, Chowdhury immigrated to the U.S. in 2010 and began working in the souvenir industry in Midtown Manhattan, which depends almost entirely on tourism. He came to the Times Square shop a year ago, when business was good.
“Last year this time, there was too much business, too many people walking in the streets,” he said. “After Paris happened and then the video, many people have stopped coming to New York because they're thinking that it's a main target.”
Known as the Crossroads of the World, Times Square generates 11 percent of New York City’s economic output and 10 percent of the city’s jobs, according to the Times Square Alliance, a coalition of city government and local businesses that works to improve commerce and cleanliness in the area. This nonprofit organization’s latest economic impact report, released in 2012, said that Times Square’s economic output exceeded that of many mid-sized American cities, such as Portland and Pittsburgh.
But London Daniels, a full-time makeup assistant at Duane Reade’s LOOK Boutique at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue, said sales plummeted after the ISIS rampage in Paris.
“Saturdays and Sundays are our biggest selling days, and 85 percent of our customers are tourists,” she said, “but daily sales on the weekend dropped from our $2000 average to $600.”
Daniels has become more anxious and suspicious since the incidents. “You definitely become way more vigilant,” she said. “You’re always looking around and getting a little bit paranoid. It’s definitely nerve-wracking.”
LOFT, a women’s apparel retail chain at Broadway and 42nd Street, directly facing the commercial signs that appeared in the ISIS video, also saw a sudden sales decline in the aftermath of recent threats.
“Honestly, there are other things that affect our sales as well, for example, our competitors in Times Square,” said Mileny Torres, who joined LOFT as a store manager in mid-October, “but after the video surfaced, the next day we had a really slow day. Outside we had the police officers walking with their dogs, which was a bit scary as well.” By early December she said that sales had picked up, “but I still think there’s a scare at Times Square.”
Torres, who has lived in New York all her life yet still new to Times Square, now comes to work concerned not only for herself, but more so for the other employees.
“Our employees expressed to us that they were concerned about what was going on. If they don’t feel safe and want to go home, we have to let them take a leave,” she said. “It was a lot of responsibility taking that in and seeing how it did affect business.”
Broadway shows also took a blow. According to the public data provided by the Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway industry, weekly grosses following the Paris tragedy dropped by 5.4 percent while attendance lowered by 4.7 percent, even with two additional shows that opened after the attacks. However, theater attendance bounced back 7.4 percent during Thanksgiving holidays, as compared to the previous week.
Restaurants seem to be the one business category exempt from the slump. Sean Parnitch, manager of Qi Bangkok Eatery on 8th Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Street, said he was in shock after seeing the ISIS footage involving Times Square. “I thought it was going to affect the customers, so they wouldn’t want to come to the area. Fortunately, it hasn’t been affecting the restaurant.”
Parnitch thinks that the restaurant industry may have been spared for a simple reason. “Lunchtime we get a lot of office workers, and dinnertime we get tourists who go to Broadway shows and regular customers,” he explained. “People have to eat to survive.”
On the same block, Dafni Greek Tavern has also temporarily escaped from the commercial slump. “We work with a lot of tourists, usually 70 percent of the customers,” said John Zarros, now in his fifth year as the manager of the seven-year-old restaurant, “It’s the beginning of the holiday season, we will see at the end of December if business is going to decrease because of the threats.”
Zarro provided a similar explanation. “People have to eat, no matter what,” he said with a laugh. “We get a lot of tourists. We’re going to do well. Tourism has been affected just a little bit I think, not that much as people say.”
Recent Times Square visitors shared a variety of opinions about the danger level.
“I was afraid to go on the plane,” said Uliana Savinykh, who has been traveling alone from Moscow on an 11-day trip to visit friends in New York. “But I think the United States is a very safe place.”
“To me I look at it as ‘Just roll the dice’, ” said Michael Bonnell, who was relaxing in the Times Square pedestrian plaza on a break from his three-day business trip from Atlanta, Georgia. “I traveled a lot right before and after 9/11 to New York, Washington D.C. and Europe,” he said. “You can’t just put it like ‘Oh, I’m afraid of terrorism.’ Then you’re going to be afraid of walking out the door.”
Even so, many people working in the area have expressed hope for more guidance on preparatory strategies from the government and the police force.
On November 25, Chris Temcen was walking down 8th Avenue towards Lids, the athletic headwear retail chain, after taking a one-hour evening break from work as a hat embroiderer. To his astonishment, NYPD had blocked the section between 40th and 42nd Street because of a suspicious package near Port Authority.
“I immediately called my store to make sure that nobody in the store goes down that way,” he said. “Now everyone's on their toes about any boxes or bags sitting around in the area. I don’t know about any evacuation plan. I’d love to know about it.”
“Everyone’s talking about it, but no police or government people have come here to tell us where to go and what to do,” said Daniels. “Since September 11th, the city should have always had some type of evacuation rules. Just like how we have our fire safety and earthquake procedures, shouldn’t we come up with some type of plan?”
“I haven’t heard of any evacuation plan yet,” said Parnitch. “It would be best for the cops, the management and the city to work together.”
Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance, said, “We are both grateful and confident that the NYPD and the Mayor are, as always, taking the appropriate steps to ensure that all New Yorkers can continue to live normal lives even in the context of recent events and concerns.” The Mayor’s office and the NYPD did not respond to requests for further comments.
Chowdhury has decided to be vigilant on a personal level. “My father worked as a magician in my country. When a magician does magic, he moves one hand and everyone looks at that hand. But his magic is done by the other hand,” he said in an analogy of the Islamic State terrorists’ technique. “We can’t believe everything we see from the front, we have to turn around to see what’s behind.”

Strategy XXI Partners
Business Consultant
New York, NY
(June 2014 – August 2015)
SXXI Makes Presence Known at Asia's Largest Toys and Baby Products Fair
Shanghai (November 12, 2014) – Strategy XXI Partners founder and partner Harriet Mouchly-Weiss attended the 2014 China Toy Expo and China Kids Expo held last month in Shanghai, accompanied by the agency's senior advisor Eric Ricaurte and consultant Qingqing Hilary He.
The largest toys and baby products fair in Asia welcomed 50,515 attendees from over 120 different countries at the three-day event, with 1,364 global exhibitors occupying over 6,200 booths.
For the past decade, Strategy XXI has worked with the ICTI CARE Foundation on developing and refining the ICTI CARE (Caring, Awareness, Responsible, Ethical) Process, which helps to continually improve worker conditions in the international toy industry supply chain. This has been accomplished through its audit and training programs, with a special focus on China where 80% of the world's toys are manufactured.
"It has been a great pleasure to see how the Shanghai Toy Fair has grown over the past few years, participating in China's rapid economic growth," said Mouchly-Weiss. "Strategy XXI, through its work on behalf of the ICTI CARE Process, is proud to play an ongoing role in the toy industry's success."
According to statistics released by the China Toy and Juvenile Products Association (CTJPA), the total number of toys and baby products exported by Chinese manufacturers in 2013 grew by 7.58% compared to the previous year. As China continues to be the main manufacturing country for children’s and juvenile’s products, the role of the ICP is integral to ensuring the health and safety of factory workers, as well as consumer confidence.
In strong collaboration with CTJPA, the ICTI CARE Foundation hosted a series of workshops during the 2014 China Toy Expo, such as the executive roundtable meeting and the annual seminar. Chinese brands and manufacturers convened at these workshops to learn more about the critical importance and the specific ways of improving worker conditions and management methods to achieve better product quality and financial results.

Barnard College hosted its sixth annual Global Symposium in China on Wednesday, March 19. Women Changing China gathered exceptional leaders in business, finance, academia, media, and the arts for conversations about their experiences and perspectives. The event, attended by more than 300, took place at the Portman Ritz Carlton in Shanghai.
As one of the six fellows, I enjoyed running my original leadership workshop for local and international high school students, representing the student body at VIP receptions, serving as the bilingual host for the conference, and ensuring that everything ran smoothly that day. China and Canada Further Exchanges on Sustainable Development in the Oil Industry
(Translations for my video piece broadcast on Phoenix North America Chinese Channel, 2012/08/14)
[Introduction] In recent years, Canada has made many breakthroughs in oil exploration and development, as it continues to gain experiences as well as advanced technologies in the field. Likewise, China has devoted considerable effort to the petroleum industry. The two nations recently advanced the level of cooperation and communication on exploring petroleum resources through mutual efforts.
[Body] As one of the five Chinese cities with major oil fields in the country, Karamay is endowed with rich oil reserves. In order to seek more environmentally sustainable methods for developing oil fields, Mayor Chen Xinfa of Karamay arrived in Canada with his delegation on an eight-day visit to cities such as Calgary and Burnaby. During his visit, he aimed to further the China-Canada cooperation and communication on oil trade practices. Meanwhile, he hopes to strengthen relationships with various Canadian municipal governments.
Mayor Chen expressed that China could learn from Canada’s abundant experience in petroleum exploration. This trip is invaluable and beneficial to both countries, as government representatives from both sides convened to carry out in-depth discussions on the possibilities of developing and maintaining oil fields in environmentally sustainable ways.
[Interview 1] Chen Xinfa (Mayor of Karamay, China)
“We are developing our first oil sand mining field in China. Therefore, we are very cautious about the extraction process and putting extra focus on potential environmental issues. It is our priority to ensure environmental protection, adequate handling of the tailings and preservation of the ecosystem surrounding the oil sands.”
The last destination of Mayor Chen’s visit was Burnaby, British Columbia. He said he was impressed by Burnaby’s beautiful landscape and enjoyed conversations with the Deputy Mayor Paul McDonell in City Hall. They both expressed positive prospects of cooperation between the two municipal governments on areas including education, and light industry.
[Interview 2] Paul McDonell (Deputy Mayor and Councilor of Burnaby, Canada)
“We have to get our people together with the people over there to look at what we can bridge between our two communities, what we can take over there for expertise to show them what they can do, and then also we can learn from China because we’ve learned a lot from our trips to China too.”
[Ending] The Karamay government hopes to further cooperation and friendships with more Canadian municipal governments in the future in order to exchange and absorb experiences in oil drilling, extraction and environmental protection.
