As Americans, we are justifiably outraged when we witness a totalitarian dictator murdering his own people in the streets. However, why does our collective anger rise only when citizens are murdered at the hands of their own governments?

A porous border, inadequate funding for law enforcement and a close proximity to extreme violence, is a sure recipe for a potentially devastating future clash with the cartels in our cities. I would argue that the cartel is so well-armed and funded, that with the exception of Al-Qaeda, they pose the greatest threat to our homeland since the end of the Cold War. It is my hope that we, as Americans, recognize the real danger that exists so very close to home before we have an organized and powerful cartel operating in nearly every major city in America.

God the Father is the supreme being, the Alpha and Omega of creation. Described in the Old Testament as acting "with faithful love towards thousands of those who love Me and keep My commandments" (Ex 20:2-6) and in the New Testament as "our Father in heaven" (Mt 6:9), many of us acknowledge that God exists, with many if not most of those who believe saying that, "We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible" as professed in the Creed. But to what extent do we really know our heavenly Father especially in this post-Christian day and age? That is, to what extent do we know our Father on a personal basis, despite all our regular or not-so-regular professions of faith?

God the Father is the creator of the universe, the Maker of all mankind (Gn 1:1-33, 2:1-25). He is our Father in every sense of the word. As children who are literally the product of His handiwork, our Father loves us with infinite love and profoundly desires to be the central part of our lives. In fact, our Eternal Father intensely longs for us to develop an intimate relationship with Him: a relationship characterized by heartfelt and ongoing conversations of intimate sharing, analogously to the form of relationship that we would normally have with our earthly fathers. Naturally, such conversations with our divine Father would occur within the context of the epitome of functional child-father relationships. God the Father profoundly desires to be present tous, inus, with us and for us as Father, throughout the course of our daily lives - as He wants us to live reciprocally in Him, with Him, for Him and through Him - because that is His primary function as first Person of the Holy Trinity. He is the Father of everyone and everything that has ever existed, exists and is yet to exist, despite the ongoing and obstinate denial of many regarding such a basic immutable reality. He created us so that He could delight in us as His children and so that we too could take full pleasure and delight in Him as our Father. All of this because, in both essence and fact, we are the human product of His handiwork: we are the only beings on earth with immortal souls and whom our Father decided to create in His own image and likeness (Gn 1:27).

The delight of God the Father in creating human beings as His children rapidly became clouded over, shortly after the outset, by and through the original sin committed by our first parents (Gn 3:1-24). But our Father's intense and burning desire to be both with us and in us, enjoying us as His children, never diminished. Indeed, it grew exponentially to the extent that He sent us His only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem us in His sight, because our Father did not want us to undergo the tortures that we would otherwise have had to go through, in order for the gateway re-establishing access to our Father to be re-opened (Mk 14:10-72, 15:1-47, 16:1-20). Meanwhile in our present time, our Father has been and is becoming increasingly accessible to each one of us in a manner highly reminiscent of the Old Testament era. The Eternal Father is proceeding to increase His presence on earth in this manner for two principal reasons: first, He cannot bear to be separated from His children any longer, through the distance presently existing between us. Second, the time is now ripe for His reign to establish itself fully on earth, as we have been asking Him to do through the Lord's Prayer (Mt 6:10) for over two thousand years.

Hence God the Father has a profound, burning and, to date, un-satiated desire to directly and intimately share with us everything that occurs to us throughout the course of our earthly lives. He yearns to be both with us and in us everywhere we are, with a pining and aching Divine Heart, desiring profoundly and with sad longing to be a vital part of everything we do. Our Father deeply wishes to be the central part of our houses, families, communities, societies and our global world by being loved, adored, praised, worshiped and venerated as our one, true and only Father. God the Father is positively hankering for us to approach and speak with Him regularly as little children, trustingly and lovingly sharing with Him every aspect of our daily lives: our anxieties, aspirations, desires, fears, labors, joys and sorrows; with us carrying out such sharing with Him with filial abandonment and trust, from the innermost recesses of our hearts. Our Father also desires us to converse with Him not through the intellectually rich but affectively barren - distancing and defensive - language of scholars or giants of doctrine, but through the simple and colloquial language of little children: the unvarnished language of untarnished or regained innocence; with genuine intent, simplicity of mind, heartfelt respect, filial love and complete trust from the core of our beings.

Based on the Greek Ministry of Education, there are approximately 330.000 students at Greek public universities at any one time. Thessaloniki accounts for nearly 1/3 of the total number of students in Greece with an estimated 100.000 students (including those attending private colleges and other higher education establishments).

For a city of 800.000 people (city population 2011) this means a particularly high proportion of students, which is evident from the lively atmosphere and nightlife. The majority of the students are coming from other Greek cities, from Europe via exchange programs and from the Balkan countries in order to study at high quality private colleges. Estimating that on average a full-time student spends about 4 years in Thessaloniki (excluding exchange students), this means that there are approximately 25.000 new students in the city every year. And they all need a place to stay...

This article will provide a brief guide to the types of available student housing, the areas, prices, and things to be aware of regarding student accommodation in Thessaloniki.

1. Types of student accommodation

1a. University public dorms.

The University of Thessaloniki offers dorms to students, based on need and mainly on financial criteria. They are provided free of charge. The dorms are mostly located close to the university campus, but their quality is very low and maintenance is a big issue, along with issues about safety etc.

1b. University Student Hostels.

These are private properties (entire buildings) which are subleased by the University and are provided mainly to exchange students requiring accommodation for a few weeks or months. These are usually ERASMUS students. As of 2011 there are two student hostels, "Matsi Street 7" and "Kassandrou Street 134", both very close to the university. They offer fully furnished "dorm-style" rooms with ensuite private bathroom and kitchenette (Kassandrou 134) single and double rooms, a laundry area and wireless internet access.

1c. Private hostels.

For students wishing to stay only a few days/weeks, these hostels are more appropriate and a better solution than a hotel. However, these are hard to find as private hostels that rent rooms/beds by the day/week are not legal in Greece unless they are Non-Profit Organizations.

1d. Private rental flats.

These are standalone flats (studio, 1 or 2 bedrooms) located all over the city that students can rent from private owners. You can usually find them through real estate agents (beware) or online ads. You will need to find the appropriate one to suit your needs. Most of them are unfurnished or partly furnished and are more suited to students who plan to stay in Thessaloniki for a few years (as you'd have to buy electrical appliances, fridge, cooker, etc).

When you move in you will need to enter into a contract with the electricity company DEI, the water and sewage company EYATH and the gas company for heating (or oil if there is petroleum central heating). Be aware that apart from the rent you will need to pay for the monthly "communal" expenses (i.e. elevator maintenance, cleaning, communal lighting, repairs, etc.), so check for the rough monthly amount beforehand as this can vary wildly. This is obviously not the best solution for a student coming to Thessaloniki for a few months or a year as the hassle is too much.

1e. Rental student studios.

This is a new breed of student housing that is very popular with both full time students as well as exchange students. This trend began in the late 90s with just a few companies offering this type of accommodation. The main concept is that of a building with rental studios, where each student has his own private fully furnished room with en-suite bathroom and fully equipped kitchenette. This creates in effect a private high quality dormitory with single bed studios. The student atmosphere is maintained along with the feeling of privacy and safety.

Some companies offer additional amenities such as a laundry area, gym, storage for bulky items, bicycle parking, etc. This solves the main problems a student would have if he rented a studio from a private owner. In addition to this, some companies offer an ALL IN rent which includes the cost of heating, electricity, water, communal expenses, etc. even a fixed line ADSL internet connection. This way students won't have to deal with the Greek public authorities in order to get a contract for everything. This is especially suitable for exchange students who don't have the time or knowledge to deal with this.

The United States is facing the largest shortage of healthcare practitioners in our country's history which is compounded by an ever increasing geriatric population. This example captures the urgency and critical nature of our need for standardized communication in healthcare. The United States National Health Information Network (NHIN) sets the standards that foster this delivery of communication between health networks. In the United States one of the earliest HIE's started in Portland Maine. HealthInfoNet is a public-private partnership and is believed to be the largest statewide HIE. The goals of the network are to improve patient safety, enhance the quality of clinical care, increase efficiency, reduce service duplication, identify public threats more quickly and expand patient record access. The four founding groups the Maine Health Access Foundation, Maine CDC, The Maine Quality Forum and Maine Health Information Center (Onpoint Health Data) began their efforts in 2004.

In Tennessee Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIO's) initiated in Memphis and the Tri Cities region. Carespark, a 501(3)c, in the Tri Cities region was considered a direct project where clinicians interact directly with each other using Carespark's HL7 compliant system as an intermediary to translate the data bi-directionally. Veterans Affairs (VA) clinics also played a crucial role in the early stages of building this network. In the delta the midsouth eHealth Alliance is a RHIO connecting Memphis hospitals like Baptist Memorial (5 sites), Methodist Systems, Lebonheur Healthcare, Memphis Children's Clinic, St. Francis Health System, St Jude, The Regional Medical Center and UT Medical. These regional networks allow practitioners to share medical records, lab values medicines and other reports in a more efficient manner.

Seventeen US communities have been designated as Beacon Communities across the United States based on their development of HIE's. These communities' health focus varies based on the patient population and prevalence of chronic disease states i.e. cvd, diabetes, asthma. The communities focus on specific and measurable improvements in quality, safety and efficiency due to health information exchange improvements. The closest geographical Beacon community to Tennessee, in Byhalia, Mississippi, just south of Memphis, was granted a $100,000 grant by the department of Health and Human Services in September 2011.
