general skating thoughts today:

I was reflecting on the US nationals men’s event, and I was really frustrated by how scoring played out. There are scoring problems in all of the disciplines throughout competition, not just at nationals, but I think that it’s the most obvious sometimes at Nats. I think USFS always really inflate the top men’s scores – and women’s scores really — because they need the media attention. They always try to have a national record, broken, or some sort of landmark event every nationals, because the sport in this country is dying. So when you see a skater like Ilia (first year truly senior) break 110 in the short program, it’s really frustrating because it’s a signaling that A) the skater doesn’t really have much more to grow, and B) he honestly could have flopped, and they would still have him in contention for gold.

The ladies said it was a whole other issue, and watching a genuinely felt as though the top two spots on the podium had been pre-decided. Like it was so obvious just based on who actually got their jumps played in slow motion after their performances, and who didn’t. 

I generally fear that the spore will begin to die here in the United States, followed by all over the world. The stars are burning brighter, but they’re also burning out faster. There are no athletes whose longevity and charisma will capture fans and make them want to continue watching. In Japan, I guess you have Kaori who seems like she’s going to keep skating for a long time, but her Federation really supports her and she deserves it. You also have skaters like Wakaba (will she even come back??) who have all the star power all the charisma but but are disrespectfully lowballed.

Everything became so obvious last February. It’s been about a year since the ladies event at the Olympics, I am still so frustrated about how everything turned out. kaori and wakaba you went 🥇🥈and we all know it.
