hola folks i’m not sure if this is a post i necessarily need to make but probably should elucidate in the even that ppl have questions or concerns abt my portrayals on this blog here!!
the big elephant in the room is barok’s racism tbh and there r several things i’ll touch upon with regard to it. obviously, i have interest in his character, and i like a lot about it; i find him compelling, and i think there’s a lot of potential to explore. that said, his canon writing is really, like, really problematic in ways that i know i don’t have to highlight, and it still escapes me as to why that direction was taken with him when far more palatable alternatives definitely would have existed, and were much more viable and sensible lol. what’s more, his actual attacks against naruhodou and his bigotry against the japanese doesn’t serve any sort of purpose or speak to anything beyond a really bad narrative choice, and even within the game, simply winds up being this ‘see, there’s a reason for it, here’s a plot twist’. and, yes, i know that the game does highlight numerous times that barok was always unjustified, even he himself states that he ‘knows it’s an irrational emotion’ that he wishes he didn’t have, but...it’s just. unnecessary. even if the goal was to emphasize how baseless the belief was and show that ppl can change, it wasn’t done as well as it could have been, were that to be the final verdict there. i won’t get into alternatives to the narrative that was given, but, cmon s.hu takumi.
all this aside, i’m not trying to exonerate or defend his character entirely, or strike all of his flaws from the record, or invalidate how people justifiably feel about this character. i’m not even trying to defend my own like of his character. like, at all. and honestly i feel as though i toe a fine line in this regard, bc absolving a character of something like racism is, hm, likely kind of problematic in and of its own right; but my opinion is such that i feel like barok is a character with endless amounts of potential, and so much narrative satisfaction and catharsis from his own arc, that it’d suck to not take advantage of the groundwork of a very interesting muse. like i’d rather pursue what was intended with his character than what actually, you know, was portrayed LOL; but being put off and downright hurt by what was portrayed is not something i want to sound like i’m invalidating, because i’m really, really not trying to!
anyway yeah this isn’t even something that really ‘needed’ to be divulged i guess but in case ppl were wondering no i’m not going to write a racist, so consider this a divergence from canon i guess, and yes you are entirely valid in hating this dude and wanting him dead.

@falsekarma sent: ❝ i have seen what the darkness does. ❞ to bartok :^/
It is not an address so much as it is a spoken aside: a thing said in adjacent to a man, but nary eye to eye. Rather, the prosecutor's back is turned to the other, a beleaguered gaze setting upon the stillness seen from the window of a quiet office. He can feel the stare of the student boring into him all the same. Even as moonlight crests atop the towers, staining everything beyond the depth of the glass in silver, there is scant peace to be found.
He thumbs the rim of his chalice mindlessly whilst words, for the first in what seems like a lifetime, elude him entirely. The boy speaks instead, with a voice that echoes his father's, and a conviction that supplants his abnegation.
Asōgi.
A name now wrought with wretched heartache, or perhaps it always had been. And now where the certainty of a roaring pyre crackled, there exists a dissonance he knows not how to ponder; the steady blade of hatred was easier to endure. A mordant breath escapes him then, and he quaffs a dredge of wine with a subtle flick of the wrist. Guilt is sickening, and the pendulum of absolution is nothing short of obscure. Yet here he stands: Genshin's living legacy, a child whose father was wrongly stripped of him in a death whereby he was the executioner. They've the same eyes, he notes: justice and judgement, bounded in one.

“ Such darkness shall never shroud these halls again. ” There is hope in the vow, but only just. “ That is the reason you bade me stay in London, is it not?  .            You wish to cleanse the courts of this foreign land. ”

@falsekarma sent: ❝ do you see no ghosts in me at all? ❞ to my pops :^\
To simply call a man like Kazuma Asōgi 'a sharp lad' would be to belie nearly all that he harboured in his heart. He was shrewd, certainly, and serious in a manner that beckoned forth a degree of incredulity. In some sense, his question isn't one that catches Yūjin entirely off guard: or rather, it isn't one that he allows himself to be caught off guard by.
Instead, he greets Kazuma's stare with the same amount of gravitas ( though, the boy's gaze has always been one stippled with fire, so alight with passion and dignity that few could truly think to requite it ), and, with a small frown, leans forward slightly in his armchair.
“ 'Ghosts'? ”               He knows, of course, what he's referring to, and he knows, too, what Kazuma likely wishes to hear. However, one's wants and the world's truth do seldom align. That he bore in him the self-same honour of his father's soul was undeniable, but it was scarcely a mercy to force such a loathsome weight onto his shoulders. “ I believe that is too adverse a word for it. ”
Tumblr media
“ Your integrity speaks to me of your father, and your kindness is that of your mother's. I've little doubt that you still carry their sprits within you. But... ” The edge of hesitation inches toward the sentiment, and Mikotoba exhumes a curt sigh, casting a brief, sidelong glance toward the bookshelf before setting his sight on him yet again. “ Before that, you are your own man, Kazuma. You are not a vessel of the past. Please remember that. ”
