Earth Angel
i saw you
from across
the way
with a flower
tucked just behind
your ear
upon contact with mine
your eyes redefined
“green as grass”
looking closer
your skin glistened with a glow
only able to be cultivated
by the sun
you didn’t utter a single note
but i knew your voice
i could hear it between my ears
more silver than the moon
all this from one long glance
but with glances
come fleeting thoughts
so with purpose
i stepped toward you, earth angel
wanting for our paths
to do more than
cross
with that
your golden legs turned north
and began to stroll
your gait
begged for companionship
but was quick enough
to intimidate, earth angel
i followed as close as i could
under the circumstances
in the distance
a footbridge
crossed over
a stream wide enough
that the footbridge
was necessary,
not a suggestion
the sight of the bridge
slowed your walk
to a wary approach
as though you were
contemplating a leap
i reached the bank
a jump too late
you’d already
confronted the water
that was the last time
i saw earth angel,
as a reflection in the stream
delusions become slippery when wet
