I'm back working on HOTD part 2 - when Dany enters the warlock's chamber and after that the visions that she has there . And it occurred to me that I didn't do a portrait of hers ...because in my mind I always see her from behind because is her POV ...so... here it is Dany ..in the HOTD .

Every time I read this chapter I'm surprised how young she is ...15-16 and how alone she is ...in the middle of it all ...and I don't know because of that ..the loneliness - in my head- makes her even younger ...just a kid ...with three dragons ..and a crown ...and a lot of people depending on her ...so I tried to capture that ...Dany the kid with her dragon alone in the world ...

what I love about catelyn’s characterization is that she isn’t everyone’s mother. she refuses to treat jon like one of her own. she doesn’t have any “motherly instincts” towards theon. even with brienne, she connects with her on more of a woman to woman level than through some mother-daughter dynamic. she never feels obligated to play the angelic “mother to all” figure.

but that’s the best part about her journey as a mother—it’s kind of messy. she has a favorite child, she’s forced to choose between her kids, she actively resents a motherless boy, she dislikes the hostage child living in her home. like yeah catelyn’s love for her children is beautiful and “pure” or whatever, but it also makes her cruel, selfish, impulsive, ruthless, even vengeful.

tbh catelyn’s sense of motherhood is just so unapologetically human, so refreshingly honest. she may be a mother, but there’s nothing romantic or intuitive or easy about it. catelyn stark loves her children, but it’s not that simple.

one of the reasons why I find the Sansa v. Arya discourse insufferable (asides from the fact that they are 9 and 11 years old) is that there are a subset of people who are able to (correctly!) identify that neutral things labelled as feminine are valued far less for that association, that feminine activities and hobbies and appearance is often denigrated, and that negative qualities (stupidity, for instance) are associated with these activity, but many of these people seem to also think women are somehow socially rewarded for deviating from expected gendered roles and being a cool tomboy, which is neither true in ASoIaF and real life.
