People often ask if a red mark like this means the eggs is fertilized and developing. The answer is no. This is a called a checked egg, birds can be clumsy, and the hen here likely had a hard landing, leaving a tiny blood spot in the egg. But both of these yolks ARE fertilized. If you look closely, there's a small white spot on both, called a "bullseye" which shows that the egg is fertilized. When the feral cat, Whino, showed up last summer our youngest cat, Jack, was displaced, and moved out into the utility room. It's taken months but Jack's slowly taken his place back in the house. Last night, he slept on my bed for the first time. It was a surprise to me that when Whino showed up later, Jack growled, but stayed put, and it was Whino who dutifully moved to the foot of the bed, where he remains. Duckling 1 Had two test eggs in the incubator. Both hatched! I snuck them under a hen who is setting duck eggs. She took them last night but pecked one this afternoon and drew blood, so now they're in the chick pen instead.
