New blog! About pianos and stuff!
As a piano technician, I get to work with a lot of old and often very strange instruments. I've been working at a sizable piano company (that will remain unnamed) for about a year now, and I want to use this blog as a window into my piano related shenanigans.
A lot of my work, at the moment, is centered around pianos that are being rented out to high paying customers, or just got out of the factory. I also have a contract with a university through this company to manage their instruments. Like most music programs, they're unfortunately pretty underfunded. Their pianos need a lot of help.
Anyway, with few exceptions that kind of stuff is pretty boring and monotonous, and it's not really my end goal. Though I'll be sure to post the highlights when they happen. No, my ideal path in this profession is to have a small workshop to revive dead and neglected old pianos, the kind of instruments that would normally get shoved into a basement or worse, thrown in the dumpster.
Speaking of, the company I work for has a service where they'll take an unwanted piano that you can't get rid of on your own and toss it for you. I have a lot to say about this so I'll save it for later, but those pianos have a little slot in the warehouse where they sit for a little while until they die. I call it Piano Purgatory. That's where a lot of my posts will come from, I'm sure, because that's where the most interesting ones are. Sadly.

I don't have much else to say right now, so here's a picture of an old action with nice lettering on the hammer rail. Expect more soon!
